Looking for a 1960s coat pattern

Hi everyone. I'm a new member. I'm a costumer and member of the DFW Costumers Guild and am currently really getting into vintage clothing for my costuming as well as for day to day life.

Anyways, I'm here today to ask for help. I am in LOVE with a jacket I saw in a blog. Apparently it's from the original Thomas Crowne Affair movie. If you go to this blog linked below, scroll to the middle and see the side button jacket.

Has anyone seen a pattern for this jacket??? I'm currently searching through ebay and vintage sellers, but I have such limited time to do so that I decided I'd ask for help from ladies who may have seen it before.

Thank you all and I look forward to learning lots from you!

Easy Vintage Embroidery

I'm sure many of you have heard about the wildy popular company, Sublime Stitching. It's a place to buy hip embroidery patterns with themes like rock and roll and tattoos. Last Friday I went to my local sewing expo and found something similar that struck my interest.

Yesterday's Charm is a company that does the same thing except with reproductions of actual 1930's-50's embroidery patterns. On the back, the patterns include the original suggested color schemes. I was throughly impressed and ended up buying two. Alas, somehow I didn't come home with the vegetable polka pattern...

I thought you all might be interested since they'd make great additions to tea towels, pillows, cardigans and I'm sure alot of other things that you'll think of.

The Truth About Nylon Stockings

I found this article from a 1950 issue of Good housekeeping and thought it had some really great information about the maintenance of nylons. Every vintage woman knows the importance of never baring her legs. (Knows, but doesn't necessarily uphold. :x) A large problem with wearing nylons so often is that they tend to get snagged, or stretch out in an unflattering manor after some time. I often grumble that I am cursed because I seem destined to ruin every pair of nylons I get after one or two wears due to my nails that simply adore snagging on things regardless of how smooth they are.
I thought you guys might like this article.

Truth About Nylon StockingsCollapse )

Some of the main points that I think this article covered in caring for your nylons was that:

1. You must be careful when washing your nylons, they are delicate. Don't use harsh chemicals, and most definitely do not heat dry them.

2. When hanging your nylons it is best to do it from a rod or bar that is non-wood, as the wood can cause snags.

3. Having well manicured hands(and toenails) will help the life of your nylons drastically in preventing snags.

(no subject)

Hello strangers! I've been quite non-existent lately, and for that I apologize.
I've made a flickr account where I have slowly been uploading random tutorials. I put up the ones that flop, as well as when it works.

Here's the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/undea…

There's not much there, but if there's anything anyone wanted a tutorial for, let me know and I can make it up... it's just sort of hard to pull one out of no where when there are so many different places one could start! I have a plethora of old patterns from the 30's-60's that I could try scanning in, I also am able to draft simple(and more complex if you're feeling brave) patterns to make things such as halter tops, pencil skirts, swing dresses, corsets, etc...

I am also currently working on a small collection of recipes and random pieces of knowledge called "Only Grandma Knows" Which will be random tips to achieving vintage beauty with almost no money what-so-ever. (I've got a recipe for the most amazing facial you'll ever use that uses spices from your spice rack, amongst other things!) My great grandmother lived(beautifully) during the depression, and had a plethora of random tips and tricks to uphold your appearance without the money to go out and buy things.

Karen and I would like your input! on somethings we are considering for the community. first off, we thought about having weekly "events" in the community. I'm not sure if many of you re familiar with the Wardrobe Remix project. Essentially the goal is to wear an old outfit in a new way and post pictures describing it. We thought it would be fun to put a twist on this and perhaps every Sunday(just an example since we weren't sure which day would be best, and Sunday is after Saturday night.) we could post a thread with a picture and description of our favorite vintage outfit from that week, and everyone else could either post a comment to it, or they could post an entry with the a tag about something like "Best Vintage Outfit Week 123.2.2 whatever" We could also post one for best hair-do for that week. And we were thinking that on every Monday and Tuesday we could post a "Vintage Tip" which is a small little piece of information on how to live vintage-ly easier, and then we could post a new tutorial(supposing we have one made up.)
I thought we'd run it by anyone who actually reads this still to see what they thought. We'd like to get the community to be somewhat up-and-running.

Vintage Links

Karen and I are in the process of making our plethora of useless links look like they're actually useful. I am posting them in the information page, but I thought I would also post them under a cut with a link from the info page so that if anyone wanted to suggest new links to add they could just comment on this entry. This may or may not be a great idea, but no harm in trying, right?
I hope everyone's having a great day!

Pomp Tutorial

Hey; I apologize for not getting anything up sooner. I had thought that somehow taking pictures and doing my hair would be the hard part; little did I know that getting photobucket to cooperate and work would be the most difficult part of all. A make-up tutorial should be coming soon, and I am in the process of sewing a basic pencil skirt tutorial; but for now here's a tutorial for a simple pompadour. I tried to make it as understandable as I could; if anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

The images can be found here.

Chapter 1

I was goofing around on the internet and found the demand for the 1940's Hairstyles by Daniela Turudich is outrageous. Instead of paying 200+ for a 100 page book, I thought I'd help by posting some of the chapters. This will be an on going process as my scanner is ricketty and I'm lazy....
