Joy Division Film Screens at Cannes
Control, the new film about the life of Ian Curtis, will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17th. Celebrities in attendance will reportedly include members of New Order, Depeche Mode, and Bono. The film is the feature-length directorial debut of noted photographer Anton Corbijn. Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis commited suicide in 1980 at the age of 23. The role of Ian Curtis will be taken on by little-known 27 year old English actor Sam Riley, who most notably played Mark E. Smith in the film 24 Hour Party People. Meanwhile Samantha Morton (Minority Report, Jesus' Son) will play Curtis' wife. The film will open in various European countries this September. A U.S. release date has not been confirmed.
Meat Puppets Plot Comeback
Founding Puppets Curt and Cris Kirkwood hooked up with new drummer Ted Marcus to re-launch the alt-rock staples. The band's comeback effort, Rise to Your Knees is scheduled for a July 17 release from Kansas City's Anodyne Records. No cover art or track listing has been revealed.
Bassist Cris isn't just enjoying life back making music -- he's enjoying life as a free man. He was sentenced to two years behind bars in 2004 for assaulting a security officer outside a post office.
Superchunk Record New Single
Fans eagerly awaiting a new Superchunk album, we have some good news and some bad news. The good news is the act has a new recording slated to hit stores June 5 from Merge Records. The bad news is, it's only a single. The act's "Misfits and Mistakes," which it recorded for inclusion in the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters movie film which should be arriving in theaters shortly. The single's B-side's a little less impressive: It features Aqua Teen character Meat Wad's vocals on the same song.
