Benedict Cumberbatch talks about Sherlock and Martin Freeman
Interviewer: Sherlock, anyone knows Sherlock? Obviously, it has been wonderful, but you had said that being in Sherlock that was magic. Why do you think that?
BC: Um… It was a lot of things. It was Martin. It was a modern era take on it. It was Steven… first of all, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss took something they were obsessive fanboys over with total respect, and they crafted a modern version of it with huge (amount) details, hugely rewarding loyalty towards the original stories, but with a very witty plot twist. And I think it was also, you know, it was the dawn of Twitter, and this guy was on the internet, and John Watson was blogging. And I think there was a synchronicity where television became, you know, it was pre streaming. It was sort of a water-cooler moment made digital. And I think that's why it went global. And I, I don't know, maybe it was the part that had just been waiting for me at the right time as well. I just loved it. It was just a heck of a thing. And again, the mental geek a bit. He had to be in the digital space the equivalent of the computers. He had to have an AI speed so that he was speaking as fast as most people think, but very quickly. And that was an acting challenge, and also to some extent having him work on this character, how that fits in society now, where you have asexuals, autists, whatever those, you know, you know, whatever theories of those kinds of wonderful superpowers are, you know. And I think that spoke to a lot of people, that he had a superpower. And socially incredible also such a lot of people take pleasure of other people being vicariously rude or straight, or direct.
Interviewer: No filters for him.
BC: Yeah, no filters for Sherlock. And I think that is a part of his appealing. He's brilliant. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant mind.
Interviewer: What was the first time you walk around the street without being unnoticed?
BC: Oh, you know, it was a particular type of hair, which I don't normally have. You know, I have dark hair and I don't usually have it that long. When I just stepped out of some, you know, pre-production, it literally was that I'd go to the hairdressers and come out, dyed and with the shade, and people literally crack it and sort of, oh, Sherlock! It’s him. It was the first time. And I remember when we were making it, Martin was already very famous from the Office. And when we kind of spent time with each other, started all sorts of, you know, people would sort of go, oh, this is Tim Canterbury! ‘Yeah, yeah, I mean, he's being younger than me, doesn't he? Yeah, yeah…’ He just joked about it.
Interviewer: He's such a fun and nice guy.
BC:Yeah, he's great. He's very funny. One of the funniest human beings I've ever met. And just so inventive and brilliant. And he filled that role with so much nuances and care. He's a precision artist, he's technically brilliant, but he's also a musician I mean, he's got jazz in there as well as every other kind of music. He's wonderful to work with, and like I said, I think that was very early in my answer, that was a huge part of it - that chemistry - that I liked to be there really well.
Red Sea International Film Festival, Q&A, 10 December 2024
main lead this second lead that. shutup! You know who I was actually down bad for?? the marquis. he might have been a cowardly idiot, but in my heart, he is the bravest, sweatiest, kindest, MAN. this man, refused to marry for any reasons other than love despite being born into a position of power and privilege where marrying for political reasons is commonplace. he watched his parents cold, loveless marriage and instead of turning into a broody idiot who would perpetuate that kind of trauma onto others, he learned from their mistakes, grew from it, and refused to inflict his pain onto others. despite knowing he was never a product of his parents' love, he did not let that hatred turn inwards or turn gloomy or hate himself. he is sunshine personified. a regular golden retriever. even when faced with the threat of exile, he chose to stand by his convictions.
not just that. he properly confessed to miaomiao and backed off when she rejected him the FIRST TIME. did not persist or try to convince her or throw a bloody tantrum or worse, use his power to force her. It's only when she says she loves and wants to marry him that he moves forward with the wedding plans. even when mu sheng drags miaomiao out in front of everyone, he does not question her, follow after her, or feel like she hurt his face somehow. he is never displeased by her actions, never doubts her relationship with mu sheng after she says he's like family to her or when mu sheng joins them to go wedding shopping. he is courteous to miaomiao at all times, listens to her choices, doesn't let his nanny belittle or make her uncomfortable. he's over the moon to be able to marry her and even tells her that the marriage he wants is one of partnership and companionship and that he will do everything in his power to give her everything she wants.
PLUS, when pinned to the wall by a demon, seconds away from death, he still refuses to abandon his fiance to save his own skin! he would rather die than abandon her!! this man, with zero cultivation, no fighting power, would rather be crushed like an ant than abandon his fiance.
but the same man, when he learns about how she might not be marrying him out of her own free will, despite the pain and hurt, DOES NOT FUCKING HESITATE TO REMOVE THE BRACELET AND TAKE OFF THE ENCHANTMENT!!! EVEN IF IT MEANS SHE WILL LEAVE HIM!!! BC HE ONLY EVER WANTED HER OUT OF HER OWN CONSENT!!! He even says, wailing with grief that he hoped he would choose to stay. this is a man, born in a patriarchal society and in a position of so much power he can have anything he wants in the world. but still, he chose love. given freely. With consent.
AND LASTLY knowing that the woman he loves loves another man. and that this man is his half-brother, a product of his father's love for another woman. someone born out of love unlike him. someone his father would have loved, unlike him. knowing all this, he should have rightly hated this guy. AND YET. he wants to befriend him. wants mu sheng to know he has a brother in him if he ever wanted YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE HIM I would have married him in a heartbeat!!!!
Lately, Ding Yuxi has trended in weibo for his phenomenal acting in Love Game in Eastern Fantasy and people have started calling it “jinjiang style acting” for being able to portray the fancy and wordy description or narration jinjiang (JJWXC) novel authors use. For context, jjwxc is a chinese website for publishing novels.
Someone in weibo has created a compilation of his micro expressions and let me tell you, if you appreciate good acting, watch this.
NOTE: All subtitles were MTL’d! I only added subtitles so that when I rewatch it I don’t have to rely on my notes for the translations. It’s all really for ease of watching. I apologize if there are mistranslations within the video.
A little difference I noticed in Miao Miao and Zi Qi’s confessions:
With Miao Miao, when Zi Qi goes to kiss her he angles his head like he knows what he is doing. Miao Miao responds similarly.
With Zi Qi, when Miao Miao goes to kiss Zi Qi, it’s head on, a little chaste and awkward and he does not know what he is doing.
It’s a nice nod to their different experiences. We don’t know anything about Miao Miao’s dating life but she is definitely experienced in romance books and probably dramas. Zi Qi is completely innocent.
i lied, put your clothes back on, we’re actually going to talk about how brennan and hodgins are best friends and how they’re one of the most underrated pairings in the show despite being buried alive together, and hodgins being brennan’s counterpart in every au the show has done and them knowing each other from the main cast the longest and enjoying little pieces of each other that the others think are odd
