Flail post
Mar. 21st, 2016 11:35 pmI feel it is time for another flail post. So much going on this year that a fan can look forward to. Where to begin?
Star Trek:
- I have preordered and paid the new 1:6 scale QMX Kirk and Spock. Now I just need to wait for them to arrive in July. The story behind those is wonderful. In 50 years of Star Trek no company ever made 1:6 scale high end collectors figures. The ones that were out there were rather toys, and the faces and clothes just did not look good. So a fan took it up himself during the past years, making the best figures ever, and now they are officially sold by Quantum Mechanix and he's got a new job with them. Sometimes dreams come true!
- Equally I look forward to the Mezco figures. Those are 1:12 scale, but with real clothes and also lots of accessories, in Spock’s case even a head for changing. I am super excited for these, as that picture shows a bridge setting so I hope to get a full bridge one day. They already teased pictures of working on the Captain's chair. Already up for order are Spock, Kirk and Sulu. I hope good ol’ Bones will be next!
- If you had told me one year ago that I would be looking forward to the new Star Trek movie at the end of the year, I would’ve called you crazy ;) Funny how an attitude can change. I hope I can find a cinema with English language. When the trailer leaked at first it was only the German version and it just isn’t the same without Karl Urban’s original voice.
- I’m also looking quite forward to Fedcon, where hopefully William Shatner will be, if they don’t really un-invite him again. But I am also looking forward to Vic Mignogna, the Captain Kirk of Star Trek Continues. The sixth episode will have its pre-premiere at Fedcon, before it will be officially released at the end of May. To see it on the big screen and with a room full of people instead alone at the computer will surely be awesome. I won’t miss that!
Doctor Who:
- In May my Big Chief Studios tenth Doctor’s TARDIS will arrive. The eleventh Doctor’s TARDIS is shipping to fans right now, and their enjoyment is palpable. That thing is huge! 11 kilogram they say. I kinda regret having changed the shipping address to my work place (it was necessary as Fedex did not give it to a neighbor)
- The Ninth Doctor figure supposed to ship in October.
- Still waiting for the Jack Harkness figure going up for pre-order. I guess it will take till the end of the year, they’ll do Rose and the War Doctor first. Just as well, my purse can use a break.
John Barrowman:
- The official DC Malcolm Merlyn Comic that John and his sister Carole have written, is coming out every two weeks digitally and in July as a book
- John will also be in an episode of Reign, where he is another bad guy and uses his Scottish accent. I think that is a first in a TV role? I’m super excited for that one. Somewhere in Summer I guess. For some odd reason episode 17 isn’t listed on IMDB.
- They are also still working on The 49th key and bringing Hollow Earth to the screen but these things take time to develop I guess. It’s hard to be patient though.
Matt Bomer:
- Walking Out has filmed in December, if you haven’t read the short story, you can read it here
It is a movie for film students, I hope we’ll get to see it in a way!
- He’s hopefully also still working on Monty, the movie about Montgomery Clift. I can’t wait to see that one. It’s time that our Matt gets a main role!
- There will be also soon The Nice Guys and The Magnificent Seven coming out, but it sounds as if his role in these will be rather small. I bet he’s dying again. He seems to do that a lot…
Did I forget anything? What are you flailing about this year? Tell me!

Date: 2016-03-23 02:29 pm (UTC)That Tardis is massive. Just sayin'
I recently bought the Hallow Earth novels but haven't read them yet. I didn't know they're trying to bring it to screen...that should be fun! I've never heard of the 49th Key but the premise sounds amazing. Can't wait to see that (assuming they'll show here)!!! Excited to see John on Reign. I hope he has his Scottish accent going. I think Reign starts up again here in April (why they took such a long hiatus after January I'll never know).
Matt is a great choice to play Montgomery Clift! We'll have to wait a while for that one since it's only in pre-production.

Date: 2016-03-23 03:18 pm (UTC)Fedcon hasn’t yet uninvited William Shatner and I hope they don’t! As I only bought my ticket when he was announced in November. Most of the other guests are from other Star Trek series which I haven’t seen yet so I don’t know them.
We can already buy photograph and autograph tickets and apparently the sale on those was not so good. So they said we need to buy more tickets, otherwise the money will not be enough to pay his fee. Many said 100 Euros for one picture is too expensive, and they already got one in 2012 when he was here (but I wasn’t a fan yet at the time so it will be my first time meeting him). And at his age, who knows when we will get another chance in Germany. Travelling to the USA is too far for me. He will also be in Birmingham/UK in October, but that is one of those huge signing events which I don’t like.
William Shatner and Patrick Stewart together surely is something rare that does not happen very often! Can you at least watch the panel on youtube? Sometimes fans film it. I know it’s not the same like being there, but better than nothing?
I don’t know if you know my story but it was one year ago when Star Trek Into Darkness was on German TV and I wanted to watch it for Benedict Cumberbatch. But I did not like it very much. But then I started at the beginning, with the original series and the original movies, and when I then watched the JJ Abrams movies again, I liked them much better. Because now I understood all the small things that you only understand if you are a fan. Plus I watched in English, which is a lot better, for example with Scotty’s Scottish.
There are a lot of old fans who hate the new movies, but I think it is great if they bring young fans into the fandom! The new movie will also be the first which I will see in cinema on the big screen, which certainly is a different experience than in TV.
I may need a new apartment for the TARDIS ;) Or maybe I’ll get a real TARDIS, then there should be enough space inside! Do you know where I can buy one?
I’m not sure at the moment whether they want to do a Hollow Earth movie or TV series, but from time to time we get a tweet from John Barrowman showing that they indeed work on this with some other people. I actually don’t like fantasy books but I really liked these! Because I like drawing and painting, so a world where paintings can come to life or you can travel into a painting appeals to me. I got the first book for free! I had done an action figure story with the Torchwood team reading the book. Carole Barrowman retweeted it and then the publisher sent me a signed book for free! Then I made a second part, this time with more figures reading the book, and Carole tweeted it again. It all ended with me making an action figure of her and my five minutes of fame with them talking in TV about my figures ;) If you don’t know those action figure stories yet, I made a post with all the links here: http://dieastra.livejournal.com/55122.html
I’ve never heard of the 49th key either, as I am not really into comics. But I’m sure there’ll be a way for you to watch it. I forgot to mention the new Star Trek series coming in January 2017 for which American people have to subscribe and pay for CBS Access, but they already said that they plan to sell it to other countries as well. They would be stupid not to.
I’ve never watched Reign before. So you say it’s good?
Matt said he only wants to do the Monty movie if it is done right. The right people, good authors, good actors. If not he rather not makes it. So I hope it will be great! Last time I had it better, I had become a Matt Bomer fan when the movie The Normal Heart already came out. But the other fans also waited years for that one! Have you seen it? It’s really good.

Date: 2016-03-23 07:43 pm (UTC)I've watched the original Star Trek and have to say it's my fav. I'm not really into the other Star Trek series but have watched some episodes. And I like the reboot ST movies esp the first - there were so many homages to the original series which is probably why I liked it so much. The second one wasn't as good but I still enjoyed it. Bringing in new fans to a fandom is always great no matter what.
So you want to get a real TARDIS...I might know a guy ;) lol
I sort of remember you referencing Carole Barrowman retweeting you a couple of times and you also posted a video of a morning show. I didn't know the details with the book etc. Very cool!!!
A new web series for ST? I hate having to subscribe and pay for things...I'd much prefer to watch on TV rather on computer - screens are a wee bit too small for me.
Is Reign good....I'm not sure how to answer that. It doesn't stick to any French/British history I know that's for sure. Also CW has a YA vibe too it and the show is more like teen historical romance than a drama series but the costumes are stunning. There are parts of the show that are brilliant and funny and then there are parts that are well mediocre. It depends on what you like. I'd say watch the first 2-3 shows of the season 1 and then decide (sometimes takes that long to get into a series). The last half of season 3 starts towards the end of April.

Date: 2016-03-23 09:35 pm (UTC)Even if Fedcon wanted to, they are not allowed to make it cheaper. Apparently that is what he gets at American cons, and it is what his agent wants. Unfortunately conventions have become a business and they are milking the fans. I hear a VIP ticket at Dragon con last year was 150 Dollars - that is only the entrance and guaranteed seat in the front rows - this year it is 450 Dollars? And you have to pay autographs and photographs on top of it.
For the recent Sherlock convention, they had tickets with some stuff included, they were 1000 GBP. To get an in person autograph of Benedict Cumberbatch you had to invest at least into the 600 GBP ticket. Insane. I saw Benedict Cumberbatch at a different con for much less. So it depends on the organizer.
Last year I did several pictures with John Barrowman for 20 GBP each. This year a different organizer wants 45 GBP for it (it's more in Dollars) Stephen Amell is even 65 GBP. Which is 121 Canadian Dollars. And if you compare Stephen Amell and William Shatner who has achieved much more in his life, suddenly it does not sound so expensive anymore?
Before Stargate, I never was interested in any science-fiction. I still not am if they are mostly on a space ship. I am not interested in Star Wars and space battles at all. So far I only know Stargate, then came Torchwood and Doctor Who, and now TOS. Yes, it might look old fashioned but the stories are still interesting and the actors, especially the main three, really great together. I fell in love immediately. And I don't mind wobbly sets at all.
Have I tried to convince you of "Star Trek Continues" yet? If you are a fan of the original, really, you must watch this. It is simply awesome. I am a huge fan. You think you are watching original episodes. Every detail is just perfect. Try it! I love especially that I can be part of the community, by getting pictures from the set while waiting for the next episode. Imagine they had Twitter already back then! And they have a crowd-funding campaign at the moment where I intend to send a bit of money. But you can watch for free. And Vic is really great as Kirk, sometimes you blink and think it is the original.
Yeah, the new Star Trek series was THE news a few months ago. They got a lot of old people back, Nicholas Meyer for example. Just have a look, the info is all over the net. As for how to watch it, you are asking the wrong person here. Apparently people stream it from the internet to their TVs? My internet would not be fast enough to do that. But maybe other channels later will have it also surely? And if all fails, you can always buy it on DVD.
Yeah, I'm afraid I am too old for CW teenie series ;) I started with Smallville but gave up on it after a while. I guess I'll watch the one episode with JB and then see whether I am interested in more. It seems he will be even dancing, he and the main actress tweeted pictures of dance training!
I wish he could have had a role in "Galavant", that would have been perfect. I love that show.

Date: 2016-03-24 03:25 pm (UTC)I will definitely check out Star Trek Continues.
I've always loved sci-fi and yay for wobbly sets :)
I wouldn't say Reign was a tween or teen series by any means but it does sometimes have that YA vibe in certain episodes but all CW shows have that to me...it's still worth checking out to see if you might like it or just watch the John B's episode as you say and then decide.

Date: 2016-03-25 09:49 am (UTC)I recently saw a picture someone had taken with the original Star Trek crew in a shopping center back in the Seventies - for free! With William Shatner and everyone.
Oh yes, please check out Star Trek Continues and then come back to me as I have so many more videos to share - they recently built an engine room and showed videos of how they did that. Scotty is played by Chris Doohan who is the son of James Doohan.
Here's the link to the episodes - five are out so far, number 6 will come in May and number 7 in fall. If you start with number 1, which is my least favorite, please believe me it gets better with each of them: http://www.startrekcontinues.com/episodes.html
Make also sure to watch the funny behind-the-scenes videos.

It looks like you've got so many fan stuff to wait for!
What am I waiting for? The audios with the Tenth Doctor, of course. They also start filming Sherlock any day now. I love it when the photos from the set arrive and everyone is trying to figure out what is going to happen :) Filming Broadchurch starts on May and I'm curious if they keep the secret about everything this time.
I'm looking forward to the panel with David and Matt Smith on something-con in the USA, if David doesn't cancel. I'd just like to see them together talking about Doctor Who. I hope someone will post it on the Internet.

Date: 2016-03-25 09:44 am (UTC)Although they say the actual box inside is a bit smaller. I'll need a trolley for it!
You make some very good points here which I am ashamed I forgot! I should sign up for the Tennant audios of course as well. I usually don't follow Sherlock filming but only watch the finished product, so I had no idea this was starting. And I don't even know whether David Tennant still is in the third Broadchurch season? I'm kinda afraid to check LOL I probably would watch it anyway, but of course with him it's more fun. But his story has come to an end, I don't see how they can continue it?
I guess it will take till last year till be see anything of these filmings though? That is a long wait. I didn't put up the new Star Trek series which is supposed to come in January 2017. Can we not just jump ahead a year or so?
I also had no idea about that Matt/David panel. That sounds awesome and very special! Not all conventions allow filming though, so I hope we will be lucky. Other cons even film it themselves, in good HD quality and put it on youtube. I love those. Fan filmed ones often have bad sound quality and then you can't understand a thing.

Date: 2016-03-25 07:52 pm (UTC)And I don't even know whether David Tennant still is in the third Broadchurch season?
No one has officially said he is, and I can't remember David saying anything about season 3 (the fimling dates come from Olivia Colman) but everyone, including me, assumes he is there. He's one of the two main characters! I can't imagine Broadchurch without him. And I don't feel like his story has ended - the taxi driver has asked him where did he want to go, and he didn't answer. We know he can be a policeman again after the surgery, we know he's "done his penance" but what he's going to do? Where does he belong? When this story ends, I want to know he's going to be fine.
I guess it will take till last year till be see anything of these filmings though?
Yes, which is very frustrating :) No Doctor Who this year, except a Christmas episode, no more Sherlock this year, no Broadchurch this year. What am I supposed to be doing until then?
Not all conventions allow filming though, so I hope we will be lucky.
I know and frankly, I don't understand the rule. It's supposed to prevent fans from just watching it online instead of spending money on tickets but if you can go, if you can afford it and it's close to where you live, of course you'll go! Fans would always like to meet their idols in person. And for people who can't go, the records work as an advert and make the event more popular. There's a chance more people would be interested in the event next year. They would share the links and spread the info about the event. It looks like a win-win scenario to me.
Other cons even film it themselves, in good HD quality and put it on youtube.
And that's a good behaviour to follow!

Date: 2016-03-25 09:35 pm (UTC)Is there actually Broadchurch fic? I'll have to check it out. To read some fans speculations where it could go next. Some are very talented.
Speaking of David, did you know about this? http://www.david-tennant-news.com/richard-ii-american-debut/
(And I meant take till next year of course but you figured it out ;) )
As for the conventions, at the British cons it always has been forbidden and the reason they gave to us was that the guests shall be able to relax, and have fun, and not watch what they are saying all the time in fear it ends up on the internet. I can understand that but at least they should do their own filming and cut a DVD then.
Some American cons even had a way for you to watch the panel live in the minute it happened but you had to sign up for a little fee (10 Dollars). It was also watchable afterwards. So there are many ways.

Date: 2016-03-27 07:12 pm (UTC)There are some Broadchurch fics but I don't know how many of them have an actual plot. I've only read some short ones with Alec and Ellie, I mean those when they're not a couple. A big number of people seem to ship them...

I see. I'd like to know what actors think about that, do they really mind being recorded at the conventions?

If I remember correctly, Comic Con has done that recently? I think I've read about it somewhere... It is a way, I suppose.

Date: 2016-03-27 08:58 pm (UTC)In the two years after Sherlock jumped from the building, I have read some great fanfictions with plots trying to explain how he did it - and especially how John would react to him coming back. I never could write something like that.
Edit: Totally forgot to reply to this part: I'm following so many of his fan sites I get all news at least three times now :D
I'm of the opinion that one never can follow too many fanblogs! Better to have the same info three times than missing it. So often I have been glad for all the people finding all the information I otherwise wouldn't have gotten. There was that warning ahead that David and Catherine may play theatre together so I could get prepared.
Or, a few months ago, I joined a forum to talk about 1:6 figures. It is huge and I don't know half of the fandoms, but I was happy in the corner of those that I know. Now with the announcement of the Star Trek figures, I am glad to have a place where to ask questions from all the experienced people. If it hadn't been for this forum, I would have had to buy them for expensive money either at an American shop or at Forbidden Planet. But in this forum is also a member who is a retailer in the UK and he has great feedback and great prices, and on top of that will even get the extras. And without that Matt Bomer forum I wouldn't have found the link for the "Walking Out" story (have we talked that one yet?) And I'm sure there are many more examples which escape me at the moment.
And of course if I find any important information I do share as well. That is the beauty of fandom! Give and take.

Date: 2016-03-29 06:02 pm (UTC)Me too. They set the bar high for the show :)

I'm of the same opinion :) Even if I already know something, I like hearing from people about it.
And without that Matt Bomer forum I wouldn't have found the link for the "Walking Out" story (have we talked that one yet?)
No, I forgot about it. I still need to read it.
That is the beauty of fandom! Give and take.
Amen to that!

Date: 2016-03-31 05:43 pm (UTC)There's been an article with an interview with him:
http://www.timeout.com/newyork/theater/david-tennant-on-shakespeare-broadchurch-and-his-new-york-stage-debut
Last question:
What are you up to after this? Anything you can tell us about Broadchurch?
As soon as I’ve done Richard II [in America], I’ll be starting Broadchurch Season 3, which is about all I can tell you. I know nothing! I have no script. It’s always been the way we’ve made Broadchurch—the actors have been kept relatively in the dark. When you play a policeman who’s investigating a crime, it’s quite useful to have the information fed to you one episode at a time so you’re not playing the ending. I’m presuming it’s about a crime and that I’ll be investigating it, but to be honest I don’t actually know. It means I have to stop pretending or obfuscating with people like yourself. It’s easier not just to be proclaiming ignorance but actually be dwelling in ignorance.
The interview was posted two weeks ago, I don't know how it got missed. Apparently, I don't follow enough fan sites! :)

Date: 2016-03-31 05:51 pm (UTC)I may not follow David Tennant fan sites, but I do have friends who are a fan of him and I haven't seen them posting about that either. Very weird. There seems to be a certain focus shift over to Tom Hiddleston at the moment ;)

Date: 2016-04-01 11:03 pm (UTC)It was about two people getting married but everyone saying that they won't last a year. Do you know it?
I think it's "I give it a year", it matches. I've seen it in the cinema before I knew who Olivia Colman was. Now I'm looking at the list of the cast and see that if I've watched it now I'd also recognize the actor aho plays the main character :) I remember liking the film, I hadn't watched many British comedies back then so I was surprised how different the humour was from most of the American comedies.
There seems to be a certain focus shift over to Tom Hiddleston at the moment ;)
I'm seeing it, too :)

Date: 2016-04-02 08:00 pm (UTC)Double Yay! And my parents today expressed interest in the second Broadchurch season that will start on German TV tomorrow. During the past four weeks, they re-run the first season (airing two episodes at a time) and that's how they noticed so they asked me if it's old or new.
I'll record them and then give it to them for watching. They also said that they have no idea what will be there as the story had already ended. Yeah right ;)

Date: 2016-04-03 03:40 pm (UTC)That's great! My dad has watched both seasons - they aired on tv one by one, like one long season - and he enjoyed it very much. He even wondered what he knew David Tennant from, and I was puzzled for a while, because as far as I knew, he hasn't seen him in anything else. Then I remembered - Spies of Warsaw. I can't believe he's remembered him from a, well, not his best role, watched two years earlier with Polish dubbing. Still, it's David. ;)
They also said that they have no idea what will be there as the story had already ended. Yeah right ;)
We've all been there :)

Date: 2016-04-03 08:44 pm (UTC)You have Doctor Who day after it's in the UK? Lucky you! Or was only the last Special? Still, lucky you!
Has the Sherlock one aired on Polish TV also?
No, there wasn't a rerun since it aired on January. Which was unbelievably quick, 17 days after it aired in the UK! The channel bought all three seasons and started transmitting in March 2014, so that means season 3 aired only four months after it aired in the UK. It's not bad for Polish standards. And then they bought the Special so quickly. We were joking season 4 will air in Poland first ;)
no subject
Date: 2016-04-03 08:50 pm (UTC)I meant, whether it already has aired at all. Obviously you are quicker then than we! The English Sherlock started in 2010, I remember then having to wait two years for second season in 2012. German TV also was kinda late but for my friends who hadn't known it before then the wait between season 1 and 2 was only a few weeks. Since then new episodes usually air around March/April.
Don't joke! I had that indeed, the movie with Matt Smith about Christopher Isherwood. It was shown in German TV before it was shown at the BBC. You gotta wonder.

Date: 2016-04-03 10:22 pm (UTC)I see. Yes, Peter Capaldi without his accent is not complete :)
I'm thankful we have that conversation because I check the site of the BBC channel in Poland for newest information and learnt they've just transmitted season 8 (for the first time) and they start a rerun of season 1 in a week! I'm very excited about it because since I've become a fan, they were rerunning seasons 6 and 7 in a loop and I've never watched other seasons on the telly. I have to tell my friend to whom I've been telling about Doctor Who. Maybe even my dad will watch it, although I don't know if he likes it :)
Don't joke!
I'm not joking! There was an article in a newspaper some tie ago that season 4 will air in Poland in autumn (or was it even spring?) 2016. A mistake, obviously but quite funny, considering our own fandom jokes.

And it was made by the BBC! Incredible :D

Date: 2016-03-24 09:24 pm (UTC)I was flailing over the new Venture Bros season, but it just ended. So now I'm excited about Agents of Shield and Once Upon a Time. And the Uncanny Inhumans comic a friend just gave me.
Cheers!

Date: 2016-03-24 10:44 pm (UTC)What we know about Reign so far is that John may even dance in there - he tweeted a picture of himself and the main actress, doing dance rehearsals. I've never watched the show before, I hope I'll understand the episode without having seen the rest?
I have no idea what Venture Bros is / are, but your other selections are good choices as well! Sometimes I wonder what ordinary people do - those who are not in any fandoms? Life must be so boring for them ;)

The Venture Bros is a brilliant parody animation of boy adventurers like Johnny Quest, comics, super hero/villains, super scientists, star wars, etc. It's a very smart show. With a lot of smart music and history references. I could go on about it forever, lol!

Date: 2016-03-24 11:10 pm (UTC)I just recently said exactly the same somewhere else. Each day when I log into my e-mail at GMX I am greeted by "news" about people I don't even know and don't care about. Who never have achieved anything, other than apparently always being where a camera is. It's a pretty shallow life.
John dancing?! OMFG! How is he not a huge star by now? I just can't even...
One really wonders... I mean, of course it is a bit different in the UK, 17 years on West End (and also Broadway) musical stages and moderating countless BBC TV shows should count for something, but still... he wrote on Twitter that he had auditioned for "Galavant" but apparently was not right for the show. That would have been THE chance to show America the multitalent he is. We'll have to wait for another opportunity. I had hoped it would be when he moderated the ABC show "Sing your face off" but he did not sing in that himself sadly.
Then again, I think he is happy in the niche he is in right now. He can still lead a pretty normal life and going to the supermarket and take pictures with fans at airports. He even tweets hints on Twitter for people where to find him, which else celebrity would do that? And he wouldn't be able to do that anymore with lots of paparazzi following him around.

Nobody told me either. I found also out via youtube, and then couldn't stop for HOURS. It was 4 AM, no kidding, when I admitted defeat.
He has several CDs out also. And DVDs from concerts. Stay away from CDs with the title "The very best of" or "The Essential" - they are just put together randomly. I can give you a list of his real CDs. Musical songs and Popsongs. Not sure if it's your cup of tea but you'll find out!
For the last CD, he did crowdfunding and one of the perks was being in the studio while he recorded it. I'll never forget that. You can't be any closer than that. It was a very intimate experience. I had no idea how long it took to get through a song - with "Mandy" one of the reasons was he was tearing up all the time. I have a detailed report on that here on my LJ if you like.
I saw him live in concert in the UK and apart from the songs I also love the funny little stories he tells in between. He acts them out, he really is the born entertainer. He has us in stitches and in the next moment it gets very emotional and you can hear a pin drop. And his mom and dad are also on stage and one time in Cardiff he even got Scott to sing with him. He had no idea, the poor guy but it was awesome.
If you want to know anything about John, you can ask me, I am quite the expert ;)
I didn't expect to like Galavant, as I can't get into Monty Python humor at all, but I really love it. I guess it is a very special kind of humor.

Date: 2016-04-09 09:28 pm (UTC)I find though that reading the comic clashes with my idea of Malcolm Merlyn as I knew him so far in the show. In the show, I got the impression that he was an ordinary guy before he went all bad because of the death of his wife. But in the comic, he has a past, with a different name (Arthur King) and already did fighting etc.
It's the comic character backstory, you can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merlyn_%28DC_Comics%29
I don't know, I just expected something different when they said they would show us Malcolm's past! It's still a great comic of course, just not what I had expected.
