Great article. I'm totally blind and use NVDA on Windows 11. One nit and a few observations.

The heading structure of the article is great. However, the text in the headings could be swapped, have the link read out last, and the actual heading text first. This would be consistent with something like a website title, go from the granular to the generic, e.g., the core point of the current page is read first, then the company name last. It makes it much easier to navigate by headings.

Very good point regarding testing. If authors/developers would simply disable their track pad/unplug their mouse, and try to navigate their document via keyboard only (mostly tabs and arrows), it would help drive home the point. It's so simple and doesn't even require learning the basics of a screen reader. This is most important for an interactive document. If the sighted author/developer cannot get to a field, and activate it, with tabs and arrows, a screen reader user doesn't stand a chance.

When exporting, why is there even an option to not export using accessibility features? Maybe this is legacy support for who knows what. It's annoying regardless. Are those options at least checked by default?

Feel free to never export a Word doc to PDF. Several times I've had to ask people if they have something other than PDF they can send. Sometimes the response is, oh, it's actually a Word doc, is it okay if I send you that? Word is so much closer to accessible by default than PDF.

There is no reason for an author/developer to not try using a screen reader. Windows comes with Narrator, Android has TalkBack, and all Apple products have some form of VoiceOver. These all come with the OS and all have built in tutorials which cover the basics in less than an hour.

I like to tell my sighted friends/colleagues that blind people are people. We have many differing opinions, except two: never grab my cane, and PDFs suck. I get a good laugh when I say that to a group of blind people, then some stories of when someone grabbed them, or their cane, and tried to "help" them.
