Oral Thrush

I'm hoping someone here can help me since my medical insurance has a really high deductable and today I discovered that I have oral thrush.

1:  Is there a way to treat it without visiting my physican?
2:  I've read that brushing twice a day can help.  I admit that I only brush once when I'm home all day.  Will brushing and flossing twice a day help?
3:  I'm hearing mixed results for Listerine working.  Some websites recommend it, others don't.  Do you think Listerine would help treat it?

Thanks.

Are amalgam fillings always black, grey, or silver?

Recently I learned about a type of fillings, amalgams, and that they have mercury in them.

That's crazy! Who thought it was a good idea to use a highly toxic heavy metal for dental fillings?!

So I starting worrying that I had some. I know a have several fillings, but I looked in the mirror and I can't see any black, grey, or silver. Does this mean that I have the non-toxic composite fillings or could amalgam fillings be tooth colored as well?

I also remember my dentist during some of my fillings would use the UV light gun thing, which I think is only used for the composite filling process?

A question

I heard about a study once that I thought maybe someone in this community might know about.

The study was mostly about defeatism. A group of people was shown pictures of a mouth with mild gingivitis or some other dental problem. These people started brushing their teeth more after seeing these pictures. The next group of people was shown worse pictures and that group brushed their teeth even more after seeing those pictures. The last group was shown horrifying pictures of mouths ravaged by disease. That group stopped brushing all together.

Have any of you heard of this study? I really don't think I made this up, but I'm having trouble finding it.

Hey, I'm not too sure how active this community is, but I have a couple questions regarding dental school. I currently work in a dental office right now with my dentist whom I've known my entire life. I love it there and the people definitely know what they are doing, but I feel that they are a bit behind the times on the knowhow about dental school, employment & education needed, especially since one of the dental hygienist didn't even go to college!

I'm a freshman at a community college, but after another year I am planning on transferring and getting my bachelors in general biology at a 4 year school. Has anyone ever heard of someone getting their associates in dental assisting/dental hygiene first, then go transfer to the 4 year school to finish up 2-3 years, and then continue to dental school? I don't want to take out loans, and I feel by doing this I could be very self sufficient, as well as making progress even before I even get into dental school. And another thing, is general biology even specific enough? Should I do something more competitive like Bio chemistry?

Any help would be so much help! Thank you!

Hello again.  I was hoping to see more comments to my last post.  The one person who responded didn't seem like a professional dental student.  I'd appreciate it a lot.  Thanks.
