Shippers Manifesto

Shippers Manifesto

Writing an essay like this can be difficult to do- how do you convince other people that your non-canon ship makes sense? The answer id you can’t. You can provide the evidence but there is little chance anyone will be swayed from his or her place. But upon researching this I have found that my belief in Prue and Cole as a couple has only been strengthened. There are so many reasons why they belong together. Let’s start by discussing them as characters and then a couple.

Prudence Halliwell was the oldest of the Halliwell sisters. The daughter of Patty Halliwell and Victor Bennett- sister of Piper Halliwell and Phoebe Halliwell. Prue was the responsible sister of the Halliwell’s – as the oldest she was given quite a bit of responsibility and sacrificed most of her own happiness for the happiness of her sisters. Now- as a character Prue was tad bossy and at times seemed a little harsher than she needed to be. She doesn’t take irresponsibility well and has high expectations for the ones that she loves. Prue is sarcastic and a little high maintenance. As witch Prue’s power was the strongest- mostly because she was the oldest but also because her power was tied to her anger. Anger fueled Prue to greatness many a time. Until her death in 2001 (Season 3- episode “All hell breaks lose”) Prue was the backbone and saving grace of the Charmed Ones.

Cole Turner was Assistant District Attorney- or so he seemed. Cole Turner was really the demon Belthazor- actually half demon. When introduced to the Charmed Ones he tried to maneuver into the lives of the Charmed Ones by using the weakest one-the youngest Phoebe. Over time Cole grew to have real feelings for Phoebe and the two had rocky but passionate relationship.

Prue and Cole as a couple. For some people it is hard to see- even I didn’t see it in the beginning. The best way to visualize Prue and Cole as a couple in the episode The good, the bad and the cursed in Season 3. Prue and Cole are together during most of the episode and there are man moments where you can see spark between the two. In one scene Cole thrusts Prue against a wall and the two share a look. They have many heated conversations and a lot of banter.

In the series itself there aren’t many moments that “prove” something is between them. A lot of it is implied. However if you dissect the personalities of the characters themselves it is painfully obvious. Prue and Cole are strong, bossy, opinionated and sarcastic. They both stand up for themselves and are very comfortable in their own skin. Even thought they have their own fears and insecurities both feign total confidence. They are both prideful. Many qualities are shared between the two both good and bad. They would understand one another when many others would not.

As for Phoebe and Cole- there relationship was sweet and tragic. I can see why so many people are fond of it however it stood no chance of lasting. Phoebe took a way form Cole the characteristic that made him so easy to love- his demonic half. No one wanted Cole to be evil but Phoebe pushed so hard for him to be good. He turned into a spineless coward who was obsessed with Phoebe. In the relationship with Phoebe he lost himself-with Prue that would have been impossible.

This manifesto as I said before will not be very persuasive. I didn’t write it to change minds. I wrote it for current Prue and Cole to have something to represent what they believe. I wrote it so people who are willing to give it a chance will have a proper introduction- but mostly I wrote it for me.
