[Adam has his hands knitted together in front of him. His grip tightens and loosens before he licks his bottom lip and looks up.]

I know a lot of people are in difficult situations right now, what with... [A dry laugh.] Everything, really. So my question might apply to more than one person.

Does this place have a ... psychologist? Therapist? Or something like it. Someone who knows what they're doing better than I clearly do.

[He hesitates before adding this last bit.] And if you happen to know Takashi Shirogane, I would appreciate it if you didn't let him know I was asking.

haven't seen a therapist since I got here, but if you need someone to talk to, I don't mind listening.

I teach there, I should know. Guess I'll add that to the list of things I need to look into.

Most people I've run into have had enough going on at home to warrant a few sessions. Then you add to that ghosts walking around, your friends turning into giant beasts and who knows what else.

but seriously, you need an ear? I've got two and you can even pet my dog while I listen. you don't have to deal with whatever you're dealing with alone.

and if you don't want to talk, animals can be great therapy companions. even the ones that chew your hair.

What kind of therapy did you practice formally?

[It's casual, conversational. Adam isn't expecting this dude who looks like he could use a bath and a nap, maybe at the same time, to do any work here.]

I worked in a military base before I woke up here, so obviously there was some grief counselling. But mostly it was working through trauma and cognitive therapies to help people with their day-to-day.

[Don't feel bad most teenagers need baths most of the time]

Sounds helpful, but exhausting. I remember hearing somewhere that therapists always have therapists themselves and I can see why.

All sciences, kind of doctor.

That's a really ... [Presumptuous, egotistical...] broad way to describe yourself. What are your degrees in?

Psychologically, biology, technology, sociologically, and mathematics

[Well the first one isn't even a degree of study so, Adam's skepticism rises.]

Counselor. I specialize in PTSD and veteran care.

That's... perfect, actually. I'm a veteran and so is Takashi. That fact is very relevant to the reason why I'm reaching out.

What exactly are you looking for?

I'm having a difficult time measuring my reactions to things. I can't tell if I'm overreacting or acting rationally. I was in a war just before arriving here and I think that may be impacting my ability to handle issues in my relationship rationally.

[ sam weighs that. ]

I can give you a few exercises to gauge that, at least.

I'd really appreciate it. We both have a lot going on, and I don't want to get my issues mixed up with his, if that makes sense.

I don't want to take my stuff out on him.

What makes you think it is?

Without getting too much into the meat of it, I feel like I yell at him a lot about not treating his life like it's disposable. I wonder if that's me being paranoid given our past history and experiences, or if he really does think his life is worth less than any one he can save.

Do your experiences involve fighting or being part of a military organisation as well?

Sometimes I wish my therapist were here. She's very good at listening to you, and offering guidance.

I didn't have a therapist back home, but honestly I probably should have. There was a lot going on. But I was younger and had the hubris to think I could handle it all on my own.

Believe me, I understand.

You can't be forced into it.

Well, you can be, but it's not likely going to do anything for you.

Exactly right. You can lead a horse and all that. It took some pretty dramatic turns for me to realize I needed the help.

Adam West, the guy from that one campy show about Batman. Got it. Makes sense now.

Anyway, I met Shiro here. We got tossed into some stuff together early on and we've been providing backup for each other since. It works out pretty well. He's a real responsible guy, so I don't have to do much. Usually just shoving food in his direction when I see him.

And Takashi does love to hang on to his jokes, so here we are years later.

Thanks for keeping him alive. I almost mean the food more than the back-up. He's one of the best combat pilots I've ever known, but he's pretty bad at feeding himself. I saw him light instant ramen on fire once.

Honestly, I've seen how he treats an egg and I believe you. His great and vastly diverse qualities fortunately well outshine his scrambled eggs...

Why would you ever want to willingly go see one of those?

Well, some people find it helpful to talk about their problems with someone else. Kind of like how sometimes it helps to talk about what's going on with your friends.

That's not what therapists do. My friends talk things out for sure, but therapists just try and shut you up with scalpels and electricity.

Wow, that's ... not how therapists work. They don't use either of those things. They go to school for a long time to learn different methods in talking people through their problems, and then that's all they do. Therapists can't even prescribe medication. That's a different kind of doctor.

That's what they did to Henry Bowers back home. Everyone knows that, it's why you do whatever you can to not end up in the asylum.

That's ... awful. And not at all what therapists are like where I'm from, or anywhere else I've heard of. Anyone who did that where I'm from would end up in jail.

... I get that a lot when I talk about home.

Are you from the future?

I guess that depends on where and when you're from.

For most people though, yes. Where I'm from I serve in the military, which operates in space. My boyfriends a real space explorer even.

1958. No one's even BEEN to space where I'm from. Though they're trying real hard.

That is pretty far in the past for me. Space exploration and travel is pretty normal for us. We actually have an entire military academy dedicated to space. That's where I lived and trained in my late teens and early twenties.

Are you a fan of space, then?

Yes, sir. Or at least the stuff they write stories about in the magazines my mom lets me get.
