[ Will hasn't been completely silent on the network since he arrived in April, but he's yet to show his face.
It's a genuine attempt at seeming trustworthy that he's filming himself now. ...Even if his crossed arms and inconsistent 'eye contact' with the camera suggests he's not thrilled to be trying this. ]
My name is Will Graham. I haven't met...most of you, I'm sure. So I'll understand if this isn't welcome, but—
Well, I don't really have to explain why I'm concerned about the townspeople, do I? [ He gives a smile that's got too much grimace in it. ]
I live out in Clarke Acres. It's a bit far from where they...tend to be on the prowl. If anyone doesn't feel safe where they're living right now— [ His expression pinches into a short scoff; who would feel safe right now? ] —you can, um. Come stay here for as long as you need.
I'll— share my address with anyone who asks. [ And then he opens his mouth one more time, like he's thinking of adding more...but ultimately he just looks down, away from the camera, and then the feed goes black as he turns it off. ]

omg fern please... (text)
does that mean you've been going outside? [ dad voice activated >:| ]
no subject
i mean i'm sleeping in trees most of the time. kinda have to be outside to do that
no subject
i hope you're sleeping far away from the populated areas.

He ends up sending after a short delay: ] stay safe. and...tell me if you need help.
no subject
[Except he's still as stubborn as Finn and probably won't. And it just occurred to him, this has never actually came up last month, so he might as well ask.]
you should he careful too. do you even know how to fight?
no subject
i actually used to be a cop, back home. [ And he's killed people, but Will's gonna...sit on that info for a bit longer. ]
no subject
[Genuinely cool, why didn't you mention this earlier Will!]
what kinda cop stuff did you do?
no subject
enough cool things that i ended up switching careers after a few years. [ aka 'injured on the job' ]
no subject
what'd you switch to? what happened?

She looks innocent enough on video, but that's just because her gun is stored in her cutesy shark backpack. ]
"Anyone?" Is that really smart? There's some creepazoids out there.

I was trying to avoid making sweeping threats in the main post. Figured that was more likely to attract the wrong kinds of people.

[ A pause, and then he tilts his head, eyebrows going up in concession. ] And too much trust is a calling card for anyone willing to try the longer con, but...
Decided to take my chances on judging character once they get to my door. [ On this issue, more than the rest of it, Will seems dismissively confident. ]
no subject
Well good luck running your shelter for displaced youth or whatever. I can handle the worst of what Creepsville has on offer, so I don't need to take refuge at some stranger's house.
no subject
He still shrugs just before cutting off his own side of the feed. ]
If you change your mind— you know how to contact me.

[ Hers isn't, so... you never know. ]

A nice offer, but you don't really look like you can protect your house guests.
[And those who think they can protect themselves will probably stand their ground.]
What if all the people attract attention?
[Wouldn't that put Will in danger, too?]
video
He pauses. Recognition widens his expression and then something else pinches it back down. ]
I've seen you before. On the network.
You looked at the pollen entity, didn't you.
video
That wasn't me.
[But wasn't it? Well, the network username is different. If it wasn't her, she must have a twin running around.
She can see he appears frustrated by her previous words. Not that Walker generally cares if anyone's feelings are hurt, but...]
I'm just saying, if you're going to invite people to stay with you for safety's sake, you need to be able to keep them safe.
no subject
[ It's an admission, shared lowly.
And then he sighs and shifts back a bit in the kitchen chair he's seated at, looking away for several moments before returning his gaze to the phone's screen. ] I'm not the only one staying here right now. [ Will closes his eyes during this next, brief smile. ]
But for-- several reasons, I'm not disclosing who else is here or what they...can or can't do. [ Will has someone with powers at his home, the kind that don't exist where he's from, is what he means to imply. ] That wouldn't really...support the idea of keeping people safe. If they come here.
no subject
So they have powers? I heard powers have been on the fritz.
[Although powers exist where Walker comes from, she has to take care of herself the old fashioned way.]
I can keep you and your guests safe, but I don't work for free.
[She doubts he'll hire her, but Walker is always looking for a job.]
no subject
But then, he's not the only one implying things. Will blinks and tilts his head to the side, mouth open a moment before he speaks. ] So— hang on. If you have powers, they're on the fritz.
What are you offering that you're assuming I don't have, exactly? [ If he sounds a bit snappy, that's...because he is. Reasonably or not. ]
no subject
I don't have powers. I have years of military training and combat experience.
Do you have that?
no subject
It also means this is the first time Will's actually fully forthcoming about his own work history, because he clarifies without further prompting. ] I used to work with the state police, and then I— switched into the FBI.
[ Will can't guess just from her expression which of them's killed more people, but...he has a feeling it's her. He can't decide if he's reassured or not at the thought. ]
...Still not about to offer you a job, though, sorry. I don't think I've got a line in my budget to cover 'years of military and combat experience'.
no subject
Will seems kind of nervous for FBI work, but he could be some kind of specialist.]
If it's the money you're worried about, I take IOUs or future favors. I can't really be picky right now when it comes to work.
My clients are usually pretty elite. I'm not going to get much of that here.
no subject
He sighs. As much as Will doesn't actually, in fact, like the idea of people swarming his home...he does really consider this. ] How about this: we'll still say I owe you a favor, but I'll just call you if we need. Backup. [ """backup""" aka "if we get swarmed" ]
So far everyone here is also armed, we're not guarding any...civilians yet. Too many cooks in the kitchen might attract more attention than it's worth, at least until someone takes us up on the offer for shelter.
no subject
Sounds like I'm getting the better deal, but sure, if that's how you want it.
no subject
I guess we'll find out.
[ He hesitates right before cutting off the video, hand clearly outstretched to touch the button on his phone. ] ...Thanks for the input. [ It's flat, but it doesn't sound sarcastic. ]
no subject
Text me your address. Let me know if you need me.

If too many congregate in one place, crowds will likely draw their attention. I recommend remaining on the move and changing locations as often as possible.

i appreciate the concern, but i didn't make a post about hosting a barbecue. i'm inviting people to silently stay in my house with me.
and given the 4:2 ratio so far of people with concerns vs people taking me up on the offer, i don't think we'll fill up too quickly.
[ and then after a short pause, because discussing logistics has made Will feel a little petulant about this, ] ideally, everyone without the ability to protect themselves would just go in that bunker of FEAR's that i've heard about, but i'm guessing there's some kind of...bureaucracy in the way of that. [ Or whatever passes for bureaucracy, here in a world with no real government system. ]

Has it occurred to you that some of those more predisposed to violence may have access to this very broadcast? You're only opening the doors to an all-you-can-slaughter buffet.
no subject
and if someone predisposed to violence wants to come... i guess they will.
[ Gosh, for all anyone watching this broadcast knows...Will isn't hoping anyone innocent will show up at all. But that would be awfully deceptive of him. ]
no subject
If you're enacting a scheme to lure people away for your own benefit, you'd best hope you've efficient countermeasures at your disposal.
[Because they're not going to stand for that, sir.]
no subject
how are you staying safe during this, then?
no subject
[Thanks Chara.]
Assuming you lack one, my general recommendation is to remain in motion as often as possible to prevent oneself from getting cornered.

Still, if there's an angle on this, he doesn't really see it. His gut's telling him it's just a man trying to help, even when he knows that it would make more sense to just look after himself. ]
If you feed them, they'll never leave.
[ It's said lightly enough, and with a small smile. He'll definitely take this over more masked vandals - he's changed into a fresh plaid shirt and showered, but the raw scrapes marking visible skin suggest that he's been anything but clean lately. But in the background of the video is a quiet, unscathed living room. ]
Do you think you can handle it if you get some unwelcome visitors?
[ Whether because he invited them, sight unseen, or because they follow someone honestly seeking help. ]
video
So it's a genuine surprise, and a pleasant one at that, to listen to this new tone.
Someone's taking Will up on his offer, or at least— considering it. Will blinks and sits up straighter, visibly surprised and with no reason to hide this, for all that it's naturally muted.
(This makes two of them wearing plaid in their videos, though Will isn't sporting any wounds on his own face.) ]
Trust me, I know. Back home I had— a few dogs. [ Which is somewhere between a pleasant and a bitter memory, at this point.
Will sighs at the question, but it's less from irritation and more the sound of someone settling in at a desk to talk business. ] Yes. [ Blunt and not very humble. ]
And I'm not— the only one here who would answer that way. As far as safety from a regular human mob goes...it's probably better than staying in a noisy apartment in the dead center of town.
[ Will's seeking eye contact, for a moment, through the video connection. ] Are you asking to check in on us from afar, or to— research the new place you're considering staying?
no subject
I always wanted a dog. Couldn't have one, since we were constantly on the road and sometimes we barely had enough food for my brother and me as it was.
[ Bittersweet memories all around. He's starting to learn that most people here have plenty of those, and even if Will doesn't say it, Sam's used to hearing the way people talk about happier lives lost. It's how Dean talks about their youth with Dad, how he talks about his college days with Jess - and apparently how Will talks about his dogs.
He doesn't balk at the blunt response. It's par for the course as far as hunters go, and whether or not that's close to what Will is, that's the kind of vibe that Sam's getting from him. ]
The former, mostly. I'm not sure if it would be a good idea for me to show up if things are otherwise peaceful out there, since I might bring trouble with me. The masked guys, they don't appreciate the fact that I've been stopping their fun.
[ Trouble tends to follow him even on a good day. ]
no subject
That's the nice thing about growing up. You get to choose which of your parents' mistakes to take with you. [ Not that it's ever quite that simple, but... Will didn't grow up with dogs either. Poverty's a bitch like that, and he feels an unexpected connection at the idea of moving around all the time growing up, too.
Looks like there's more than just fashion choices in common, here. ]
And like magpies, they're remembering your face and coming after you for another round? [ Will's gaze flicks over the scratches on the other's face. ] You sure you don't need help?
no subject
Admittedly it can be a purely practical move, but in this specific case he's genuinely interested, not just digging to find answers that will lead him to what he needs to know. ]
It never felt like there was much choice in it for me.
[ He thought, at one point in his youthful naivete and arrogance, that he could break free from his family's legacy. That didn't work out. ]
Something like that. [ That's what happens when you show mercy, it just gives them a chance to come back for revenge, Dad taught them that, and ignoring that lesson has already proved disastrous for him once before. But he can't believe that these people are past saving, and he can't- won't kill them if there's another way. ] I'm fine, really.
[ He's not worried about any potential assault here, in a pretty easily defensible position. The trouble comes when he goes out. ]
How about this, if I need a place to lay low for a while, I'll let you know, and if you need a hand, you can call me.
no subject
Will-- watches the other for a few moments, when he's reassured that he doesn't need help. It's long enough that it's just past awkward, just past the point most people would feel pressed to talk or excuse why they're staring. Will's just...making sure this man means it.
And he really does seem to. Clearly Will isn't the only one with self-confidence in defending himself hidden under an exterior that doesn't look immediately militant. Will's expression animates again, just a little - right at the corners of his mouth, just barely turning back up.
It reaches his eyes, at least. ] Not a bad plan.
[ A beat, and then-- ] Is that your real name? Your username.
no subject
He doesn't consider himself dangerous, though he is, at least not to anyone who doesn't deserve his dangerous side.
If that changes - which it might, if he were to admit that to himself - well, he'll find it harder to bury those worries so deep that they don't occasionally reach the surface. ]
Yeah. Sam Winchester.
[ He's clearly not used to using his real name with strangers, but he offers it now without hesitation. The usual reasons for him to go by an alias don't seem to apply here. ]
I live over in the Prospero Townhomes. If you're ever in that part of town and feel like dropping by.
[ Seems fair, since Will's already put his general area out there. Presumably he was telling the truth about it, it's hard to imagine why he would bother doing this at all if he wasn't. ]
no subject
Nice to meet you, Sam. [ And maybe it's borrowing from the professional language of endless handshakes at conferences, but Will means it when he says it.
Despite the headway made here — an offer for help in return for Will's own offer of that — Will isn't anticipating that at the end. Adult connection instead of just a business-like exchange of skills and protection. Will's surprise is clear ok his face - lips parted without a word, eyebrows raised. He sits back just a bit further in his chair in that brief moment. ]
—Yeah. Yeah, okay, I'll...see if the fog lifts enough for. Non-emergency visits.
[ Despite the stilted speech, Will's touched. Almost suspicious, reflexively wanting to back off to process this before pursuing it, but touched. He's already reaching for his phone to cut off the call. ] ...Thanks.
