[The picture is pretty fuzzy, a partial glimpse of grass, then the sky, the image jumping around, like the user isn't super familiar with filming (or, at least, unfamiliar with filming using such sleek, modern equipment). But it finally focuses, coming to rest on one of the deer, sitting calmly on someone's back porch, chewing a mouthful of grass and alternating blinking it's big eyes.
When the voice comes, it's soft. Young. The speaker isn't visible, just the strange deer.]
Does anyone know if the, um...cat police people can come make you go to school? If you haven't gone yet? I don't have any parents to call here, so I'm not sure how it works...I guess I haven't been thinking about it.
[A thoughtful pause, then a very small hand reaches out, smooths gently down the deer's face, making it close it's eyes in obvious enjoyment. There's a ring of ugly, red-purpley bruises around the wrist of the speaker, in the later stages of healing.]
Also, can deer eat marshmallows? Because this one's eaten almost an entire bag... [As if on cue, the deer ducks it's head, rustles around off-screen, then straightens up with a marshmallow in it's mouth. It seems very pleased.]

...the cat police people? What are you talking about?
[She sees the bruises and her entire gut twists. She's worn similar bruises on her wrists on more than one occasion and seeing it on someone else -- definitely another kid -- makes her want to punch whoever hurt him. There might be two sides to every story, but it's never okay. Never.]
Uh. Probably too late even if it's not okay...

Then Will pauses, scritching just above the deer's nose.] She seems to be okay, though, right? She doesn't look sick.

Might be a good idea not to put it out there that you're playin' hooky if you don't wanna get caught, Kid. I'm sure if they gave us these things then they know who they belong to, even if you ain't in the video.
[ His head lifted, less teasing and a little... more serious. Seth wouldn't easily admit concern. Yet there was. He'd seen some crazy shit and still wasn't fully sold on weird deer being safe. ]
Considering Bambi there has four eyes, I don't think marshmallows are gonna be a problem. Maybe you shouldn't eat anything wherever you found it at.
[ Even more serious, he hoped that answering what the kid asked would earn an honest answer. Seth continued with a stern look. ]
Where'd you get those bruises?
[ The kid already said he didn't have his parents around. Maybe he was horsing around with a brother or sister. Friend. ...Nobody had better laid a hand on the pipsqueak who was bigger than him. ]

[Will turns the camera back around, scrunching his nose in concern. He looks like he hasn't slept well in...weeks, dark shadows under his eyes, hollow cheeks. But he seems alert and aware enough, reaching out offscreen to keep petting the deer.]
Think there's a juvie here? My friend knew a kid whose cousin's brother's lockermate's sister's ex-boyfriend went to juvie.
[The question catches him off-guard, and he pulls his hand back to look at the bruise, seeming surprised it's there.]
Oh. Back home. I think.

She won't call him out on it, but she'll be extra smiley when she turns on the camera.]
I don't know- I hope not. [Beverly lays down on her bed, holding the screen above her.] I'd rather the cats than cops.

I don't think they'd be really good at car chases, though. ...maybe they ride the deer? [The four-eyed deer reappears, nuzzling at Will's cheek.]

[Her voice is gentle, watching the deer. There's something in her face that changes when she sees the bruises but...she doesn't ask. This isn't the time for it.]
Maybe we can ask the Dog keeper if the deer can. Or Sodder. I don't know if deer can eat marshmallows.
I do know about a park where deer love eating crackers, but those are made special.
no subject
[His experience with schools isn't...the best. Especially considering none of his friends are here.]
Really? Do you know how they were made? Do you think Sodder would care if we fed the deer. [He reaches out to pet the four-eyed deer again.] They seem hungry.

[Will finally turns the picture around, shrugging a shoulder. He looks sleepy, dark shadows under his eyes, like your typical horror movie creepy kid, but the deer currently snuffling his hair softens the image somewhat.]
I think that's what they have instead of police.

Been thinking about going AWOL? I wouldnât blame you. Thereâs a ton of things more fun than school.
[ Her voice trails off into something less enthused and quieter. She frowns a little bit. Those are definite bruises she sees on those wrists. ]
You okay, kid?
[ Her words sound like nothing more than what they are, but Margo means to ask Is there anyone I need to kill for you? Margo hates nothing more than assholes who pick on women and children. ]

I don't know. I like hanging out with Galadriel. [Galadriel is the deer, of course. Galadriel has horns, and might not be a girl deer, but Galadriel doesn't seem to mind having a girl name.
The question makes Will pause, confused, before nodding.] I'm okay.

I don't think anyone can make you go to school. You should want to go on your own. That's where you make friends.
[She can't help but smile at the deer, though.]
It doesn't look like the deer is hurting. I think it will be okay.

[Still, the comment makes him soften a little, petting the deer's nose and making it blink in calm pleasure.] Yeah, she probably has deer instincts or something that tell her what not to eat, right?

I wouldn't worry too much about the deer. I couldn't tell you about going to school, but if you want to come by the library, we can always do some tutoring. It's not like I'm particularly busy.

Don't give it marshmellows. Animals shouldn't eat junk food.
(Even if it is really cute. Eddie's own voice is very soft so he's clearly not particularly angry.)
I don't go to school much. Haven't gotten in trouble for it yet but I missed a week of it and didn't have money to buy food. So...
(Might not be illegal but clearly not a great idea to skip. Eddie kind of wonders what's supposed to happen when summer break comes round.)
no subject
She's kinda doing what she wants. If I take the bag away, she headbutts me. [Very gently, but firmly. Reproachfully. Magic deer wants marshmallows, damn it.]

His voice is pleasant and British, rolling out through the speaker. He's put it on video, sitting back, but won't rush to getting a look at this kid.)
What a lovely friend you've got there. I've got my own wandering around my apartment if you'd like to see her? Her name's Carrara but we call her Cara for short.
(His own little deer friend is a fawn that is rather tiny and very white and ghostly looking. She's see through but clearly solid enough that Kieren can hold her up against his chest. An adorable thing, really.
He's less concerned with that though and more concerned with if this kid had other bruises on him. Like on his face. Best way to get a look at that face? Cute animals.)
