[It took him some days to convince himself that he needed to this. Normally, he would ask around the streets, rub elbows or beat whoever he had to in order to get information. This wasn't exactly a normal situation, and he had mostly been trapped in a library - who'd have thought? - to avoid, well, everything.
Sleeping on books wasn't the worst. Neither was sleeping on the floor. Now, he needed real information, and with the body count apparently rising, he was pressed to actually ask.]
This here place sure is something else. Can't say I care much to experience more than I already have...
[Joel wasn't one to do anything but go straight to the point. The opening sounded awkward, like he didn't want to jump in but knew he had to.]
Anyone around these parts know of cordyceps? Could also be called 'infected' by some. Distinct lack of government sanctioned fencing and checks around these parts, so I'm gonna assume angry moon and bloody streets is more this places problem.
[Then he cuts off the feed. That's it. That's his question. Introductions are for other people.]

Infected as in zombies?
no subject
Sorta, I guess. Most zombies are usually viral caused, but cordyceps are fungal in nature.

Dunno if it was the same exact thing you're talking about but we definitely had something like it a while ago. I treated a few people with it.
(Not all of them successfully, but that's...kind of a given, he feels.)

His expression tightened, but his eyes very obviously hardened.]
Yeah... that'd be them. So they are here.
[Lock and load, Joel. Literally. Because the sound of a shotgun cocking could be very much heard.]
You don't treat the infected. You put them out of their misery before everyone around them gets bitten.

Yours a virus?
[That had been the early theory after all. Then the years went by and infected changed. Their rot was a fungus taking them over, and no more need for eyes, just echolocation.]

[There's a lot more of them showing up lately and that should be a concern. He tries to keep a mental tally of people from zombie worlds, because you never know.]
How does yours work? Ours is a 'if you die you turn' kinda deal and that's always important to keep track of in a place actively trying to kill us all the fucking time.
Voice
[He supposed everyone needed to eat, but he'd prefer to keep infection rates to a minimum and at least treatable.]
Naw, ours are if you breathe in spores or you're bitten by an infected, you turn within a day or two. If you're infected long enough, the fungus eats its way out from your brain to show on the outside. Before that, it's behavior changes. Go all crazy. It's a mess.

I'm unfamiliar with them. What are they? It would be good to be aware of any possible threats here.
[Zombies aren't a thing in her world, but she's faced somewhat similar enemies before.]
Video;
Almost felt like parenting or something.]
They're... a fungus that attacks the human brain, alters their behavior and makes them act erratically so they bite other people. Spreads the infection that way. Even if an infected is killed, the fungus will create spores that are released in the air. 'course, this place seems to make people act erratically a lot, so, unless they are showing later stages, you might not be able to tell the difference. Don't have the detection devices here, I don't suppose.

I'm so sorry. I don't know how I lost this.
[Video: UN:A_Wesker]
An endoparasitoid fungus, which generally infects insects and other arthropods? I'm familiar with it, though probably not in the way you're enquiring. Something about the way you used the word 'Infected' leads one to suspect it's broadened its range of adaptation. [Spoken in a calm, husky baritone, with a hint of a professional curiosity.]
I've seen no sign of that, though according to some of the history I've read, there have been similar outbreaks in the past.
Video
...Yeah, that'd be about right. [He rubbed his chin with his knuckles.] Apparently discovered in South America. On crops or something. Spread fast after that, though some cities were better prepared than others in the beginning.

Since when do ascomycete fungi, uhm... require government fencing? Or, well. Turn into a human-level problem, I suppose...
voice;
Since it infects the human population and causes a pandemic of dead and infected across the globe. Fencing is to keep the infected out, but also to keep control on those within.

What are the symptoms of your infected?
video;
[No cure and all that. Vaccine failures had been many, treatments had been fruitless. Then the supply chain collapse.]
First stage is head aches then erratic changes in behaviour including increased aggression, willingness to bite and glassy eyed stares. Takes a day or two to set in.

The moon and the blood is just an October thing. Call it this place's version of feeling festive for Halloween. There'll be somethin' new next month, for better or worse.
