[When the feed clicks on, Claudine is standing outside the Deerington Theatre.]

Bonjour. My name is Claudine Saijo, and I had a question.

[She points her Fluid above her, towards a raven sitting on a telephone wire.]

Is it just me, or are the birds in town - especially the ravens - acting really weird? It's not just that there are more of them than when I arrived, it's that half the time I hear them making normal bird sounds, and the other half, I hear them saying -

[The raven on the screen flies off before she can get a clear sound, but as it leaves, it certainly sounds like it's saying "War."]

- well, that. It sounds like 'war'. Has this happened before? Exactly how worried should we be?

I have heard it too. It is most concerning.

To my knowledge, I do not think that this has occurred before.

But it does sound like some sort of warning or foretelling.

I think that’s an understatement. It definitely feels like a creepy warning.

I guess all any of us can do is keep an eye out...

Relatively new, yes. I arrived last month, when things were much more peaceful.

In terms of preparing, I have the letter and bag from Ramona with me. Should I be carrying a weapon with me? I'm trained with a sword.

That would likely be a wise decision. However you can protect yourself.

That makes perfect sense to me. Better safe than sorry, non?

I heard it, too. This place gets attacked pretty frequently, so maybe you should prepare, just in case.

It certainly can’t hurt to get some sword practice in, if nothing else.

You know how to use a sword?

I'm sure you can find others to train with. There's an organization called FEAR that offers training and generally people call out looking for sparring partners now and again.

I've heard them say that too. I wonder if they're actually warning us. I don't know what kind of war could come here, but anything seems possible in Deerington.

I know that ravens are smart, but I’ve never heard one try to talk before. Still, better to prepare and not need it than the opposite.

Animals and things don't always behave here the same way anyone is used to, I think. It doesn't sound like you've been here long, right? I hadn't even stopped to think about whether they should talk or not. I guess...you get used to everything just being strange.

That's a very good point, and one I hadn't considered. I think it's probably for the best that we all keep an open mind on things like that.

[She nods.]

It's been about a month since I got here. It seemed a little quieter then.

Yeah, I think you have to sort of just accept some things even if they seem impossible.

I've been here a little more than a year. Some months are better than others. I hope whatever war the birds are talking about is...not as dire as it sounds.

[ He hopes, but this is Deerington, so it might end up being worse than it sounds. Who knows! ]

[That gets a small chuckle out of her.]

That's something that hasn't changed between home and here, at least.

Do impossible things happen where you're from, too?

[ He notices the change in her face. He gets it. Knowing that you could be stuck here for a year isn't a fun proposition. Credence doesn't hate Deerington; there are things about it that are better for him than home. But it's not a good place, either, and he's well aware of that. ]

[Claudine goes quiet for a moment, trying to figure out how to explain it.]

Things like getting caught in a time loop. It’s been broken now, but it’s hard to even think about how to explain it.

A time loop? There's magic where I'm from, but I don't think I've ever heard of that before. You said you can't explain it but if you can at all, I'd like to know.

[Claudine frowns, but nods after a long moment.]

I should warn you that the details are fuzzy around the edges. I think that’s on purpose, so that we didn’t know we were in the loop until after it was broken.

The loop was the result of a wish granted to a girl who fought her way through the ranks to become a Top Star. She chose to loop time to ensure that what she believed was a perfect performance of the play Starlight would repeat itself. No changes, no matter what.

I don’t know exactly how many times we went through the loop, but I get the feeling it was a lot.

So a time loop means...you lived the same thing over and over? How did you get out?

[ He can't help but wonder if there's magic like that back where he's from. It seems confusing and kind of terrible, really. ]

I heard it too. I think... Did you receive a bag from the Deer that had some things and a letter from a woman named Ramona in it? You may want to keep it with you. Maybe add some additional supplies to it. Like a first aid kit and a lighter or some matches. It's better than to be safe than sorry.

I did. It’s not in the shot, but I have the bag and the letter with me. It didn’t feel right to leave them. You make a good point about the matches, though. I should stop and pick some up when I’m done here.

Good. They have those waterproof box things, and it can't hurt to be prepared, right? I mean if we're prepared it just means we have extra stuff.

Exactly. It's better to be overprepared than underprepared.

Especially in this place for sure.

[ the 'bonjour' reeks a little of someone he knows...

he tilts his device until it focuses clearer on a face full of teeth gnashing on something fried and honey-glazed, the whip of laughter behind him a telltale sign of his whereabouts: the fair-ground. ]

...touché. But yes, I do have a way to defend myself. I may not look like it, but I'm trained with a sword.

Good, good. When everyone's swimming about in a school together, panicking, just trying to escape the chaos... you'll be ready to fend off whatever's coming.

[ being annoying comes natural, unfortunately, but he's giving her a... compliment? in a weird way? ]

Danger lurks in every corner, you know, so it's better to be prepared...

That sounds...foreboding.

Not since I've been here but you should probably listen to it.

I'm absolutely going to listen to it. If a bird as smart as a raven is warning about something big, it definitely knows something we don't.

More like this place is warning you. The raven is just the messenger.

Is that how it works? I suppose it must be, but...how strange.

You should get used to the idea. Not a lot of stuff here makes sense.
