Resources are obtained by salvaging items in the Survivors' camp or in your inventory. There are 3 types of resources; "Materials", "Food", and "Misc". Materials are used to build camp structures or create things from recipes you've obtained (sometimes from salvaging). "Misc" materials are things like water which don't show up in your stock.
Salvaging
You can salvage items in two ways:
- By accessing your stock in your camp; resources here will be stored directly in your stock and can be used in the camp.
- By salvaging items in your inventory by clicking the hammer icon and dragging them into it. You can craft items from here if you have the resources in your inventory. These resources cannot be used in the camp unless you first deposit them into your stock.
Note that you cannot salvage poor, expired, or legendary quality items. Higher quality items have a higher chance to give resources for that item that aren't 100%. You can salvage items that are about to fall apart (low durability), and this will have no penalty.
As you both salvage and craft items, your efficiency in creating those items will go up.
Buying/selling/trading resources
You can directly obtain or sell resources in the following ways:
- You can buy resources from Jeffrey once a day.
- You can sell one specific kind of resource to Antonio a day.
- Trade with other players.
Trading resources between players was introduced in V1.19. Before this, the only way to trade resources was by creating items and then trade those. This was very inefficient however, as it often required twice the resources to make the item, and required other resources to make the item.

Sources
The best way to get scrap metal is to find Industrial metal pieces, since they salvage into so much and are fairly common. The best way to find them is by looking at various set locations (see page) although it is also fairly commonly found by checking the trash / recycling, desks, and lockers.

Wood is a common resource that is used in many useful recipes, as well as needed in a lot of camp buildings in large amounts.
Sources
Salvaging chairs and stools is the leading means of obtaining wood resource because of their wide availability in certain maps and they cost a relatively small amount of Rest/Stamina/Fire points to pick up, compared to other items made with wood.
A great zone for collecting wood giving items is Mazon College due to the large amount of chairs. The same applies for the Sacramento Public Library in the «South district», the Bibi-Too Café in «The alley of settlements» of the Sacramento Suburbs (north of Amber Reid) and the Perfume of the Past preschool directly under the Condemned car dealership in Downtown Santa Rosa. Another good, though not so reliable, source of chairs is the Auction House Secret Passage in Arizona Jurassic Museum. Another great source is logs, which can be found searching the trash/recycling, desks, and shelves.

Tools are an important resource that can seem uncommon unless you know where to look. Many camp buildings require them to be built, and they are also required to harvest resources when farming. It is also used in a few recipes.
Sources
Since every map has at least one rake and shovel somewhere, they are the easiest items to find, although they are often poor quality.
Good zones for salvageable tool items are:
| Zone | Salvageable | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Bodega Bay | Often | The house in the north west most corner of the map has 2 hammers, a crowbar, and an abstract sculpture; At the south beach, the «Coastal Cave» has a shovel and a pickaxe. |
| Shopping Sunset | Often | The construction area (next to toy room, north of golf course) has 2 hammers, 2 shovels, and some other items. |
| Arizona Jurassic Museum | Often | The «Excavation site» has 6 shovels, 5 pickaxes, a hammer by the southwest corner and some tool boxes around the location. |
| Arizona Jurassic Museum | Sometimes | The area where Louise is next, the «Cairn Field», has a shovel and a pickaxe. |
| Arizona Jurassic Museum | Sometimes | The building where Wanahton is next, the «Unsteady power plant», has a shovel, a pickaxe and 2 tool box. |
| Blue Mesa | Often | Various locations; lots of shovels on the way to the helipad. |

- For the item, see Paper (item).
Paper is a very easy to collect resource due to the large amount books give. It's main use is for making
handmade blueprints. Beyond making blueprints, it has very little use in recipes, and is mostly used in research projects or fueling the kitchen stove's fire.
Sources
The best source for paper is books, and great sources for books are:
- Mazon College - the main building has a stack of books in the hallway by the lockers on the ground floor, and there are also many books to be found around the building.
- Sacramento Suburbs - the library near the south corner, across the bridge and on the west side of the map.

Plastic is a common resource mostly used for weapon recipes (especially flare guns and combat knives).
Sources
A great zone for collecting plastic items is the Sunset Mall, specifically the toy shop (large amount of board games and 2 plastic swords). The mall also has a good amount of watering cans and other plastic items, but they take some wandering around to find. Screen can also be a consistent source of plastic with 4 each.

- For equipable clothing, see clothing.
Fabric is a semi-common resource.
Sources
Many good fabric items can be found in
lockers. Some good zones for collecting fabric are:
- Mazon College - the lockers in the main building (both floors). Secret passage are the best source, especially the SP - Stadium (both around the field as well as the lockers). The SP - Store also has a lot of fabric items on the shelves in the first room.
- Sunset Mall - the toy shop, the kindergarten just north of it (lots of pillows and a few plushes and dolls), and the lockers of the bowling alley as well as the «Jellyfish Public Swimmingpool» (fifth room on the left of the spawn) contains fabric.
- Arizona Jurassic Museum - there is a house south of spawn (down the hill) that has a shelf with multiple plushes.
You can also get a decent amount of fabric from farming (being the only non-food resource you can actually get from farming).

Fertilizer is a resource that is mainly used for farming.
Sources
The two main ways to collect fertilizer is by fishing and collecting bones. The best source of bones is killing infecteds, but some maps such as Walker River have a lot around the map (although many are unsalvageable).

The best source of precious ore is
Jewelry; while it has no 100% locations, it's an uncommon item found in normal containers such as trash/recycling, desks, shelves, boxes, and
lockers. While they don't give ore reliably,
Dumbbells are a decent source of ore as they have set locations in various zones making them farmable.
Fountain pens are very common, and have a respectable chance to give ore.
Kukri aren't terribly uncommon to find in containers, so these are also a good source when found (always give 1 ore), and
Trophies can be found fairly easily (especially in the lockers). Guns are also a good source, and are commonly found in
gun bags.

Medicinal herbs are a semi-uncommon resource with currently very few uses.
Sources
An easy source of medicinal herbs is algae / pain killers, which can be found in wall
medicine cabinets (common),
red trashcans (semi-common), and Peruvian infected drops (common, only algae).
While a bit of a cheat, a great source of herbs is by doing Sylvia Bluth's side mission in Downtown Santa Rosa (keep in mind she is not always there). During this side mission all medical zombies and containers in and around the nearby store will have greatly increased odds of dropping antibiotics (average quality). You can then drop or salvage these in your inventory to prevent finishing the quest (as this will decrease the collection counter) until you have all the herbs you need.

Trivia
- During beta, there used to be two medical resources, with the second being "Powdered medicine". It never had an icon, and after removal all the items that gave it as a resource now give medicinal herbs.
- For other uses, see Blueprint (disambiguation).
Blueprints are an important and somewhat unique resource as they have a singular purpose of combing weapons together using a
Forge (see this page for specifics on weapon combination). Nothing else uses or requires it.
The amount of blueprints required to combine weapons together varies based on the weapons used, but often is between 3-4.

Meat is a resource that is used in various cooking and research projects.
Sources
The best zones for collecting meat are:
- Sunset Mall - The "supermarket" (and to a lesser extent "apartment") secret passage has a lot of meat. The supermarket has various beef rib and steak locations, as well as a chicken and hamburger. Apartment has 3 steak and one beef rib location. With both being secret passages the meat item are very likely to be salvageable.
- Jurassic Museum - it has various barbecues with decent chance to find steaks or sausages, but the best spot is the red fast food building at the south east most area of the map; it has a definite chicken and pizza (sometimes salvageable though not always) as well as a high likelihood to find meat while searching other things in the building.
- Highway 99 - The are various
grills spread around the map.

Fish are a somewhat uncommon resource to find in most containers, but are easy to obtain by fishing. Primarily used in cooking and research projects.
Sources
The best source for fish is by fishing (preferably with Fishing rod), with Bodega Bay (specifically the large lake to the north of spawn) and Walker River being a great source for fishing spots . You can also find fish in
fish tanks (actual fish) such as in the Sacramento Suburbs SP - Apartment and Arizona Jurassic Museum SP - Oasis Diner Entrance - «Ravaged survivor's base».

Vegetables are a common resource primarily used in cooking and research projects.
Sources
While fairly common, it is a hard to purposefully collect resource since it has very few set locations (many of which are commonly expired) and most of these spread out. The best way to collect items that give it is to search everything in a map since food items are somewhat common. Bodega Bay is a good zone for this (especially since it has lots of mushrooms).
While it would seem farming would be a great source of vegetables, it's a fairly mediocre source as even when you are lucky enough to get the right plant, each one will at most give you 5, and commonly only gives 3. It's still advised to grow vegetable plants however to slowly build up your vegetable reserves.

Cereals are a resource mostly used for cooking.
Sources
While there is arguably no "best" item to try to find for this resource, grabbing various pastries from vending machines is a somewhat dependable source. In general just keep an eye out for all the items listed below as most of them are common or slightly uncommon. The best source of this resource however is likely not from salvaging but instead from farming.

Butter is a rare resource that is used in various cooking recipes and research projects.
Sources
The easiest way to get butter is by find strawberry cake. There are 4 main ways to do this:
- Pastry Stands - These are located in certain buildings such as the Supermarket and the Cybercafé in Sunset Mall. They can drop pastries including the strawberry cake, donuts and cupcakes.
- Vending machines - There's a decent chance to find various types of cakes/pastries, including strawberry cake (grab any other pastries listed below as well).
- Lockers - all lockers may have, but especially those in the mazon stadium/field Secret passage, as it's not uncommon to find multiple there (also check the vending machines in that secret passage!).
- André Patisserie - There is a pastry shop in the Grey alley of the mall to the west of spawn (directly southwest of the Black Mages cybercafé; inside this pastry shop is a cake slice sitting on the counter (decent chance to be salvageable). Warning: shop has a lot of higher level mobs.

Trivia
- During much of beta, salt was the hardest resource to collect as only pasta packages and crabs gave it, and even then at a fairly low chance.
Milk is a semi-uncommon resource unless you have a goat pen, as very few items give the resource, although the amount of milk most items give is decently high and most of the items are decently common (other than Milk bottle and Farmer's Basket).
Sources
There are a couple set Milk bottle locations which are worth checking out if you need milk since they are somewhat rare to find in most containers and give a large amount of milk.
It is recommended to get a goat pen as soon as possible if you need milk, as it makes collecting it much easier.

Spices are an uncommon resource that is used in cooking (most commonly for
energy drinks).
Sources
While it's hard to purposefully find spices, almost all items that give it are at least semi common and can be found in the trash. A good source of spices is from farming (although what plant you get is random).

Some good locations to find pizza items are:
- Downtown Santa Rosa - You can find 2 pizzas and 1 hamburger (usually salvageable) and a milk bottle near the "office" secret passage, except instead of going in, go east out onto the deck.
- Museum - There is also a pizza and hamburgers in the red fast food restaurant at the north east most corner of the map. Note that fast food restaurant has a lot of infecteds with high level. However, the pizzas and hamburgers are usually salvageable.
While not cheap, the easiest way to get cheese is to buy them from Jeffrey in the camp. You can also buy fondue from Henry Collins in Lakeview, although each one costs

Sugar is a resource mostly used in
cooking. It's most common use is to make drinks (especially
energy drinks).
Sources
The easiest way to collect sugar is by salvaging soda and juice from
vending machines. You can also get sugar from farming. SP - Dailyneed Supermarket Freezer in
Sunset Mall has two fridges filled with drinks that can be salvaged for sugar.

- For the item, see Egg.
Eggs are a rare resource (at least without a chicken coop) mostly used for cooking and research projects.
Sources
The best way to farm eggs is by finding, well, an egg! You can occasionally find eggs in nests. It's also possible to find eggs (as well as mayonnaise) uncommonly as a random item that can be found occasionally. The best source of eggs are the farmer's basket resource crate and cheese omelets, although both are rare to find. While not cheap, the easiest way to get eggs is to buy them from Jeffrey in the camp. You can also buy cheese omelets from Henry Collins in Lakeview, although they are fairly expensive.
You can find a list of nest locations here.
Due to the rarity of eggs, it is recommended to not use eggs on research projects until after you build a chicken coop. This is because chicken coops allow you to collect 2 eggs an hour after you last collected, but requires a large amount of eggs to actually build.

Seeds are a resource who's primary use is for farming, although it's also used in a few food recipes, and semi commonly required for research projects.
Sources
While many items have a chance to give seeds and none of these items are strictly uncommon, it can be difficult to purposefully find items to salvage into seeds. The best source of these items is mostly fridges, picnic baskets, the trash, and various locations around maps (such as trees).
The best source of seeds is actually from farming. While this seems a bit counterintuitive at first (since it costs seeds to farm), all plants when harvested have at least a chance to give 1 seed, with many having a chance to give even more! The best plant for seeds is wheat as it not only gives the most seeds (5) but also has a 100% chance to always give them! Just note that pulling out plants that give less seeds isn't always advised, as you will often find the seeds lost from replanting aren't worth the seeds gained from plants that give more of them when grown.
The square garden in Sunset Mall is a good source of fruits.

Alcohol is an uncommonly used resource as most recipes that use it aren't currently very useful (as the "pain killer" effect doesn't work when simply drunk). It's main uses are for upgrading certain clothing and research projects.
Sources
One of the best locations for alcohol is Mazon College's field secret passage; directly north of the crate are 2 wine bottles and 3 wine cups, which have a high chance of being salvageable.
Another good location is the Mall's Palm Tree area. There is a bar with a pool table there and lots of alcohol.
As most alcoholic beverage locations are often expired, probably the best source of alcohol is actually from molotov cocktails as they are somewhat common and are always salvageable.

Sources
The best sources of drinking water are vending machines and lockers (especially soda bottles and lemonade, although any soda / juice is good), especially in places where there are multiple together. Some good locations for water are:
- All vending machines.
- Mazon College - both the water coolers in the main building but especially the vending machines / lockers in the field secret passage (there's also some beverages sitting around that SP).

Toxic water is a bit hard to get purposefully. The best source of drinking water is toxic water bottles, which are most easily found in
water coolers and in the white file cabinets in the Sacramento Suburbs delta 9 elevator room (upstairs). Fountain pens are also a decent source, as while they don't give much they are common and also have a chance to give precious ore. Dye is a decent source if you salvage a lot of food in your backpack, but is unpredictable to get.

You need a
Battery built in your camp to store electricity.
Sources
The best source of electricity is laptop batteries, which is a common item found on desks, shelves, and the trash/recycling. You can also automatically get electricity from solar panels, although this is a very slow process.
If you really need electricity, you can also convert fuel into electricity at a 1:1 ratio using the engine-generator set.

Trivia
- In beta there used to be a resource named "Powdered medicine", which never had an icon. This was removed in V0.49, and all items that gave it instead gave medicinal herbs.
- There used to be a
Sewing kit resource in the game that was used for upgrade resource, but this was removed in V1.18. - In the game files there is a
stone resource which based on it's ID is the 4th newest resource, added after seeds but before alcohol. You could get it from stones, which were removed with the resource in beta.
