deadbrowalking: the people of color deathwatch

The Deathwatch for People of Color

This community originally began with a focus on Principal Robin Wood. Given that he was an African American and has the Hellmouth in his office, we were convinced that Principal Wood was a man marked for Death (or some other unspeakable evil).

Then, with the implementation of court-ordered desegregation in Sunnydale and the resulting influx of people of color in the town, there was a change in mandate, witness for all people of color on Buffy.

Now that Buffy has ended, we're still keeping the candles burning for people of color in scifi, fantasy, and horror.

We await the inevitable in deadbrowalking. TV, comic, graphic novel, film, and related gossip, episode commentary, opinions, and general commiseration about the fates of people of color in scifi, horror, and fantasy are welcome.

A few pointers:

Please keep in mind that this is a place for advanced discussion of issues of race and representation from the perspective of people of color and white allies. If you are just becoming familiar with issues like 'cultural appropriation' and race and representation, these are the suggested resources: The Angry Black Woman's Required Reading, Cultural Appropriation: A Review Of The Basics, and Blue Corn Comics: Newspaper Rock.

Again, this is not a community for basic education on concepts of racism and cultural appropriation; this is for advanced level discussion.

It is also not the place to invalidate the realities and experiences of people of color in fandom or out of it. Lastly, it is not intended as a place specifically for obtaining nurturing support from people of color for processing feelings of guilt or ignorance.
