It’s hard to explain to zoomers just how insanely homophobic the early 2000s were. If you were male, and like, washed your hair regularly, people would call you a faggot.
So, dudes who washed their hair and wore button ups developed the term “metrosexual” which meant “I care about my appearance but I am attracted to women and don’t have sex with men.”
And not just “oh people called you gay to be mean” like they literally thought you were homosexual and hiding it. Women would literally be like “damn, I was super attracted to him, but I heard he wore shorts more than twice in a week, so I guess he must like men.”
you couldn’t even wear a scarf. the scarf made you gay.
Other things men couldn’t do without being considered gay:
-wear a coat
-use an umbrella
-wash their hands
-smell good
-bake literally anything, even those cookies where you just break them apart and put them on a tray
-read for fun
-sing
-use safety equipment (eye protection especially for some reason)
- own a bag for carrying things. (eventually “manbags” became a thing but it took a WHILE)
- drink any alcohol other than beer or whiskey, including whiskey with mixers
i swear, this is the funniest scene in bleach. renji gets his ass beat, and kira, former member of squad 4, brings him to…this breezeway??? and is like “hey hinamori get a load of this”
and then…a bunch of captains show up, one at a time?
ALT
byakuya why are you like this?

did an all-captains butterfly go out? “fucked up lieutenant in squad 3 breakroom. 5 minutes of gawk time before unohana finds out”
My no-prize explanation is that while Renji was in Squad Eleven and he and Rukia were avoiding each other and Kira, aware of a fraction of their whole weird deal, was in Squad Four, they set up this kind of announcement system for “Abarai got fucked up and is lying around in the designated Abarai Zone” so Rukia wouldn’t stumble across him by accident. Sometimes people like to come over and gawk and see how much blood is coming out of him this time! This is the first time he has gotten totally wrecked since joining the sixth and Kira put him in the Abarai Zone out of habit. He’s having kind of a stressful day right now and Captain Ichimaru certainly wouldn’t correct him!
So wait are livestock guardian dogs to their flocks like… Clark Kent among the residents of Smallville? He’s been here since he was a baby, we all know him, and he’s… generally one-of-us shaped, uh, approximately. And then when something goes wrong he suddenly leaps into action and does some terrifying impossible shit none of us could do. And then comes back home and settles in like nothing happened and he’s one of us again.
Hmm.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Actual answer: the sheep know the dogs are not sheep, and they also know the dog is protecting them and take their cues from the dog about whether they need to run for the barn or can just ignore anything scary that approaches.
However, a friend once had an extremely premature orphan lamb born in December who had to live in the house for a couple of months with leg braces and all that, who due to spending her lambhood with dogs instead of sheep came out of the whole experience convinced she was a livestock guardian dog! She would patrol the perimeter of the fields every evening with the actual dog, stand watch in the barn door at night like the dog, and was more than willing to throw down if she saw something scary coming towards the flock the way the guard dog did. Tragically orphaned lamb did a convincing job at being a guard dog without actually having any of the biological advantages a dog has over a sheep.
