River, Eleven, Hiro, Tempest (OFC) from Rescue Me.
River always enjoyed visiting this shopping mall. The incredible celestial view, the food, all the different people, and their lovely variety of goods for sale made it for a fun vacation. And sometimes even an exciting one.
The Doctor slowed down, forcing her to as well, since they were arm in arm. He didn’t seem to be looking at a shop window, though. He was looking off to the side with a curious expression.
“What's wrong?”
“That little girl. The one in the red shirt. I swear she wasn't standing there a second ago.”
She looked human, a very scared, very young human. Skinny with long straight black hair. She had no shoes on, only the red shirt and a pair of black shorts. She was also glancing around frantically while cowering in a niche between two shops.
“I wonder who she's hiding from,” Eleven asked.
“She's not hiding. She's waiting.” River backed up and drew the Doctor around a corner, slightly out of sight of the girl. “Get ready,” she said, pulling out her pulse pistol.
The Doctor followed her lead, getting out his sonic.
A few moments went by, River growing more and more tense, watching the girl glance around furtively, alternately closing her eyes and crossing herself. Then a man dressed all in black appeared. River assumed he was wearing a vortex manipulator under his long sleeves but she couldn't imagine where the girl had hers hidden away.
The girl surprised River by shooting purple energy directly from her hands. The man disappeared before it hit him. Then the girl sprinted suddenly, then turned just as fast. The man reappeared, and would have been standing behind her. But the girl was ready, and shot another burst of energy.
The lightning stopped, hanging in mid-air between them.
“Maria, stop this. If you kill me you will have no way home.”
“My dads will find me!”
“No, they won't. Even they cannot sense this far through time. They would have to search for the rest of eternity.”
“And they will. And they’ll kill you.”
River glanced at the doctor to make sure they were thinking alike. That's when she noticed what her ears had been telling her. All movement and noise in the mall had stopped, for as far as she could see. People were frozen in mid step, mid speech, mid eating. Only she, the Doctor, and the two strangers were still moving.
She and the Doctor gaped at each other in wonder and worry. He slipped his hand in his pocket where she knew he kept the TARDIS remote control.
The possibly time stopping man unsheathed a sword from under his coat.
“And I think that's our cue, “ River whispered.
The Doctor nodded, using his sonic to shoot the sword out of the man’s hand.
