So, at Chris' suggestion, I put my Harry Potter/Sailormoon crossover NaNo through the "I Write Like" meme everyone and their next-door neighbour's dog has been taking lately. I even went so far as to replace all the names of all the characters, change the school subjects and the spellings of everything to American English.

I continued to get:

I write like
J. K. Rowling

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

Considering my actual LJ entries get a response of "Dan Brown" (i.e. "generic shit"), (and one of my logorrhea entries gets me "Poe"), I think this counts as a variety of fanfic-win. ;)

So, since it looks like this is (whether they intended it to be or not) a word-frequency thing, it sounds like you're using more or less the same non-proper names as JKR when you fic. =) Well done.

I'm not sure what you mean by "non-proper names"? I did a fair amount of find-and-replace, e.g. turning all instances of "magic" or "spell" into "science" and such. XD

I mean "words that are not proper names." Sorry, that was an awkward construction. =) So, you have similar word-choice, even when you drop the obviously leading words out.

Ahhh! I get it! XD Thank you. XD Apparently I'm decent at channelling an author when fanficking? Dunno. Either way, I'm amused. :)

That's the first time I've seen that meme. It's pretty neat, though. I gave that a shot with several different samples of my own writing and it kept coming back with "David Foster Wallace" (whom I've not heard of previously), so it's at least consistent, if nothing else.

"You write like Charles Dickens" was, in retrospect, not a compliment

It really can't get a good fix on me. I don't have any long works that I've produced naturally, so the only thing I've got are blog posts. It's been giving me everything from Dan Brown to J.D. Salinger to Stephen King, depending on which entry I load in.

I was more than a little horrified when "James Joyce" was my first response. Oh god.

Just read about how people have been poking at that meme, and the list of authors consists of 37 men and 3 women, all of which are white. When this was pointed out to the guy who made the thing and suggested maybe he should add some variety, he basically responded with "WELL I'M COLOR/GENDERBLIND, SO EVERYONE IS EQUAL, SO THAT REQUIRES NO MORE EFFORT FROM ME. NYAH!"

Also, I can't believe Dan Brown is included in the list. Everyone is equal, indeed!

/facepalm LOL
