The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at:  www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

Westword and the Campus Press

You know, CU has had its issues, and the Max Karson/Campus Press story is one that deserves more nuanced attention than it has received so far.

Imagine my disappointment when Westword decides to engage in catfight journalism instead of actually illuminating its readers. We don't really need this, you know?

I read this in the chronicle of higher education today. It doesn't look good.

BUFFALO STANCE: Despite loud protests from faculty members and students, the governing board of the University of Colorado voted last week to approve Bruce D. Benson as the system's next president.

Mr. Benson, an influential Republican who owns an oil-and-gas company and has been a donor and fund raiser for the university, was the sole finalist forwarded for consideration by the Board of Regents after a four-month search.

But he faced heavy criticism about his qualifications. The Boulder Faculty Assembly voted 40 to 4 this month against a resolution backing Mr. Benson for the post. The legislative council of the university's student union also passed a resolution calling for the regents to reconsider other candidates. And a further barrage of 1,200 e-mail messages met the board before the final vote.

Yet the nine-member Board of Regents opted to stick with Mr. Benson. The 6-to-3 vote by the board, whose members are elected, followed party lines, with all three Democrats opposing. Colorado's new president has already pledged not to meddle in academic affairs. His political connections and his ability to raise money are seen as his strengths.

What are some big questions that you'd wished someone would have asked you the semester before you graduated?

What are some questions do you wish you would have asked?

Whither the Pipefitter?

I heard from a usually reliable source that CU has bought up most of the commercial space on the Hill and is planning to tear it down to build housing. Can anyone confirm or deny?

If so, this makes me sad.
