My apologies, I don't intend to take up too much of anyone's time with this. I just have a question, in case someone has had prior experience about it to provide an answer.

Are there any other causes of disappearances in this world aside from being sent home? A friend of mine has been missing yet they wouldn't have left for a task that'll take more than a day without informing me of it. [...] At least I don't think so...

[There's a lull from her end, as if she's done with her message. But then another line of text hastily, almost defensively, appears.]

I don't mind if they were sent back home, truly! [A palpable sense of uncertainty could probably be felt from that, yet most importantly:] I just want to be sure they're safe. I have their amulet with me, if that information can help in any way.

I'll tell you this, if you have their amulet, it might be a good idea to hold on to it. From what you're describing, it doesn't sound like your friend will get to enjoy being home for too long...

I'm holding onto it, yes! I thought it was strange to have found it unattended, given that they always have it in their person. I'm keeping it with me at all times and observing it should any change occur with it. Still, are you certain then that they're back home? This isn't an abduction of any sort?

No. No one is ever safe. I worry about my friends all the time.

And while she's aware of how naive it sounds, she was hoping with all her heart that she'll just get a clear-cut "yes, your friend is all right" answer here to at least lessen her anxiety over this. What Jaune just said was probably what she needed to hear, though, even if it's not exactly what she wanted to at the moment.

I appreciate the honesty. It doesn't really put me at ease, quite frankly, but then the truth doesn't always do, does it?

[As for the latter question:]

They've been here way before I arrived. As such, I feel like I've always relied on them to help me get used to this place. Although perhaps that's mostly because they're more calm and collected compared to me to begin with.

In fact, they'd probably tell me not to worry if they were here right now...

Don't worry. That sounds like a typical sent-home-from-Empatheias case. I've had it happen to my friends a few times.

Most of the time if someone is missing for a prolonged time it is because they have returned home, though for some even that is only for a short period of time. Otherwise, the only other common explanation is crystallization.

Are you saying it is possible they're just crystallized here somewhere?

It is a possibility, but usually, someone would have noticed by now and reported it.

That's true... I, for one, have not noticed any crystal statues near their apartment. All I did found was their amulet.

Oh! They should be back soon, then. That's what happened when I went back home for just a week, and then came back here again.

Mhm. Aside from the fact that they're the only person here from my world, they're someone I spend most of my time with as well. So having them gone all of a sudden is a bit... [Her voice just kind of trails off there.]

Knowing that it's something that has happened to other people here before and yet they were able to return safely does somewhat lessen my worries, however. Thank you for that information!

I went home for about five minutes once. When I got back, a whole month had passed here. My name had even appeared on the Wall. In another case, someone else I knew disappeared, then reappeared months later with all memory of this place lost.

Sometimes weird stuff just happens.

I suppose this only reinforces how arbitrary time works here in relation to how time passes in our respective worlds. I've been told they may return sooner within the week, but perhaps I shouldn't hold on so much to that then.

The time doesn't matter. You'll see them again. If you hold on to that, then surely . . . you'll meet again. Because you'll make it happen.

That's what I believe and hold onto, of course. Still, what if leaving wasn't their choice?

I don't know if people choose the trips home either. It seems like there'd be a lot less Otherworlders if that was the case.

And if we can choose it, people should share that information, some of us like being at home!
