[ The concept of family was not something that Pearl was familiar with on Homeworld. Gems do not have families. The word does not exist in their language, literally and metaphorically. They do not have children...until one went ahead and did, at least. ]

The dictionary I have seems to list the definition of 'family' as being two parents and their children. I suppose that would make the most sense, but surely there's more to it...

[ In the past, all Pearl knew about family were mothers and fathers and daughters and sons, but she knows now this is not the full story. She has no biological relationship to the individuals she considers family, but they are family nonetheless. She's certain of it. There's no other word to describe their relationship -- friendship isn't enough. And yet, despite this, she still doesn't know what should lie written on the page when flipping open a dictionary. ]

Home and family...it's all very difficult for me to understand. We don't have concepts like this where I was formed. It seems to depend on the individual -- it changes depending on who I ask -- but if I gather a larger sample size, I might run into common threads! Perhaps some of you might even consider yourselves to have family here, and for Empatheias to be your home.

...I have a group of individuals that I consider to be my family, too. But it wasn't always that way. I'm not entirely certain why they grew to mean that. But I want to understand! So, in the name of research: what does the word 'family' mean to you, exactly?

[ He didn't want to show off his embarrassed face so he also went with voice. This was an awkward subject for him.]

It's true that technically when people think of families it's consisted of those related by blood. A mom, a dad. Brothers or sisters.

[ There was a small pause. ]

But that isn't the only way to have a family. It's only a very technical way of looking at it... While you can't choose who you are related to by blood, you can always choose your family... Because really family is supposed to be those you find close comfort in. Those you feel you want to protect that you don't feel romantically toward.

Oooh, so this is how the amulet works when talking to people, I can really hear you in my head!

[Focus, webs.]

Hi, I'm Webby! And family is what you make of it! As long as you care about someone a whole lot, they can be your family. Doesn't have to be anymore complicated than that!

[There's a bit of a pause before she answers, but when she does, it's calm and happy.]

Family... I think it's when you grow to love someone so much, you can't imagine life without them. They've changed you for the better.

[Nora's family wasn't the conventional definition of family either. Having lost her biological family at an early age, she instead surrounded herself with people who she considered family.]

Family...they're those people who are there for you, no matter what. You feel safe with them, you feel like you can tell them with anything, entrust them with anything.

Yeah, this world is my home, I'm dead in my own. I sort of had family there; the dolls like me who AAA [ pronounced triple A ] made, but we weren't actually supposed to think of each other like that. We weren't made to think so, but he gave us our own opinions so... yeah. And Varii was... the closest I'll ever come to a parent.

To me I think the word doesn't have anything to do with blood, like it does to a lot of humans. I mean, I don't even have blood! It's more about emotions.

You aren't totally off, but I think family is a little more complicated than what a dictionary says. I have people around that I think of as family that aren't my blood relatives, but I've known them since I was a little kid.

[ Ignis and Talcott are like brothers to her, and Regis and Jared similarly stood by as father figures. her life definitely wouldn't have been the same without them. ]

They were always around when I was growing up, so I think we're all a lot closer than just friends.

I don't have any family related to me by blood, but I--

[ He has to stop himself, gathering his thoughts and focusing on only sharing what he wants to share. This telepathy thing is difficult, and he's not ready to broadcast his story to a world of complete strangers. ]

. . . I found my own family. And my own home. I wouldn't use any other word for it. I think . . . words carry two meanings: connotations and denotations. What you're reading is a denotation, a clear definition, but that doesn't make the connotation, the feeling a word evokes, any less real.

[ He is the absolute last person who should be answering a question like this, but here he is anyway, offering his "expert" opinion, because of course he is. ]

Some people will tell you that a family must involved parents and children, but I believe the more popular interpretation is that family are the people you choose. They may be literal family, or they may be someone else. It's all up to the individual.

[ This sort of answer is such a crowd-pleaser. ]

Bah, parents. They're never there when you need them most.

In the worst way.

[He sighs, then there's the sound of him snapping his fingers.]

But they're not my real family. They're just my rotten relatives.

A real family is a group of people who will love and take care of you no matter what! Many bodies but one heart, right? Chums who stick by each other through thick or thin.

That's family.
