"[...]Last week’s weather was some of the worst she’s experienced in Gary. And people are handling the devastation from the storms differently, she said. Some are lending a helping hand to their neighbors, while others are arguing on Facebook or getting in fights in long lines at gas stations. “We just have to come together as a community and try to help each other the best we can and get through this best we can,” said Guajardo, who was born in Chicago and grew up in Alabama. “Right now is not the time to argue. It’s the time to come together and get things done.” As of Monday afternoon, over 100,000 northwest Indiana residents were still without power, according to utility company NIPSCO. More than 300,000 people lost electricity because of the storm."

ao3 is an incredibly simple website, if you struggle so much that you deem it unusable then you may need to educate yourself of the bare basics of how the internet works

returning to the classical text:

Most people don’t even know her name. Alice Parker is her name. Back in 1919, she created and patented a gas powered heating system when most homes were still using fireplaces and coal stoves. She imagined heating an entire home safely, with different rooms warmed individually instead of relying on one fire source. Even though her system wasn’t fully used back then, her ideas are the reason modern central heating and zoning exist today. That’s Black history. That’s legacy.

Did a little digging and found an article talking about her in as much detail as the researcher could find including images from the patent she filed and which discusses how black scientists are often hidden or forgotten:

i hate it when theatre productions that have been running for a few years just get entire years of casts ignored/erased because everyone decides that one or two interpretations of a character are all that matter.

stop only discussing the person who originated the role. stop saying the most famous person who played it is the only good actor to do it. stop putting people on pedestals just because you think they’re attractive.

talk about understudies. talk about the person who played the role for two months only. talk about the bipoc who took over from your favorite white guy. they’re just as, if not more, talented as the person who you think can never be matched.

Mentioned to my mom I'm asexual a couple months ago and today.... we got into the car and she hit me with, "So you use they/them pronouns now?"

I went, "What. no. she/her."

"How does that work? With she/her/hers and they/them?"

I stared at her. "What are you talking about?"

"Well you came out as-" and I said, "I'm asexual."

She replied, "Like an amoeba, I know."

"Oh. My god. No. Mom. It doesn't- it's not the asexual you learned about in biology. I didn't come out as a single celled organism."

With heavy relief, she said "Oh, it has a different meaning?"

"Yes, mom."

shaving isn’t even like remotely close to the biggest issue feminism needs to tackle but it’s just astonishing to me how the most lukewarm bare minimum of normalizing natural body hair on women is met with such pushback from “progressives” on here. like that’s why i keep bringing it up. like if you fucks can’t get behind “women shouldn’t feel like they have to shave and shouldn’t be groomed into shaving” then what the hell can you be counted on for? nothing, clearly

my aunt is watching some generic daytime tv talkshow and the hosts are very cheerfully going "yknow this AI thing isnt actually as cool as i thought it was- i keep noticing the google overview getting facts wrong! isnt that weird?" and its very funny watching regular middle aged people finally catch on. we did it lads it took long enough.

I know they're named after him but for reasons I can't fully articulate it's hilarious that the guy who invented zeppelins was named Ferdinand von Zeppelin

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin literally sounds like the joke name someone would make up if they didn't know the actual answer

oh you KNOW he’s got that big bushy mustache

something I really enjoy is that I've now seen like 4 or 5 variations of roughly this same video, all slightly different in their angles and timing while obviously being the exact same bunny and room, implying that this is a consistent and frequent behavior for this bunny instead of just a funny thing it did once that got caught on camera. I wish I could have as much raw unfiltered enthusiasm for anything as this little rabbit has for its dinnertime

the best way i can think to describe the experience of reading moby dick is you’re in line at the dmv and this guy behind you very loudly says “well who HASN’T had a gay experience” and then proceeds to tell you every detail about his life in between anecdotes about how great sperm is and how ropes work and sometimes he’ll say the most poetic shit you’ve ever heard in your life and them jump RIGHT back into explaining how a whale is a fish because 1) it swims in water and you’re still only like halfway through the dmv line
