IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Chrollo Lucilfer
Canon: Hunter x Hunter
Canon Point: Just after fighting Hisoka, before Shalnark and Kortopi confirm Hisoka's death
Age: 28
Background: Wiki Link

Arrival Scenario: Free Cities

Suitability: Chrollo comes from a very dark canon and, for better or worse, causes drastic changes wherever he goes.

None of the things that compelled him in canon are present in Abraxas, but Chrollo disapproves of people who seek power for themselves, and is very likely to act against the faction that summoned him. The Phantom Troupe is regarded as a group of radicals who are too much for even the city of radicals and outcasts; Even among the extremely ruthless Meteor City they're regarded as loose canons.

His first major goal is likely to be finding some way to facilitate travel between the factions, and he won't care if it's illegal or not.

Chrollo is also very curious and takes true enjoyment in mastering the abilities he steals, so he's going to spend a lot of time learning the nuances of the various forms of magic. When information is withheld from him or secret, he's not above lying, stealing, or murdering to get what he wants no matter what the consequences are to everyone else.

Powers: • Canon Powers:

Nen

Common Nen Traits: Enhanced strength, speed, and reaction times, aura detecting.

Nen users are stronger, faster, have much faster thought/reaction times than ordinary people. Chrollo could likely very easily lift or push literal tons despite not being a nen type well suited to physical strength, he's shown that he is capable of surpassing Enhancers who don't focus in enhancing their strength.

Aura is something that surrounds every living person, and mental state/intentions can be read in a person's aura.

Chrollo can also extend his own aura to cover a large area to detect hidden things/people and it's stated that 'within the range of your en you can count the leaves as they fall'.

Skill Hunter; Bandit's Secret: Chrollo's unique nen ability is stealing the abilities of others for his own use, but it has a number of limitations and requirements.

In canon it's revealed that Chrollo heavily revised Skill Hunter from how it originally worked due to the need to have both hands or his right hand specifically for another ability. While he will initially be limited to stealing nen abilities, within a few weeks he will revise it to work on other character's canon abilities by adding another restriction; he cannot use magic to force a target to fulfill a condition of skill hunter.

In order to steal an ability he must meet the following conditions:

1. See the ability in use himself
2. Receive an answer to a question he asks about the ability/abilities in general.
3. The target's palm must touch the handprint on the cover of his conjured book 'Bandit's Secret'
4. All of the above must be completed in the space of an hour

He can then add that person and their abilities to a page in Bandit's Secret while those conditions are all met.

In order to use an ability Chrollo must do one of the following;

1. Hold the book open to the correct page with his right hand. (If the book closes or leaves his hand, the ability stops)
2. Place his Double Face bookmark on the correct page (allowing him to use two abilities at once, or, more importantly, to use an ability that requires him to use both hands or his right hand specifically)

While the ability is in the book, the original owner is unable to use it, but abilities vanish from the book either when they die. There's an edge case in canon where one ability didn't leave the book after its owner died due to the way Nen sometimes becomes stronger after death, but I don't expect any situation where that could happen again, but it's mentioned here for completeness; If death ever becomes non permanent or someone dies and comes back to life somehow, that will satisfy the rule that the ability disappears if the owners dies.

The specifics of what it can/can't steal, and some of the odd side effects;

Chrollo can only steal 'abilities', which has a specific meaning in Hunter x Hunter but is a little vague for dealing with other canons. So, to give an example, how much a nen user is able to increase their physical strength is directly related to their nen type. Enhancers can do this the most and more efficiently, and Chrollo, being a Specialist, is the worst of the nen types at enhancing. If Chrollo steals an Enhancers ability, he operates as an Enhancer only for the purpose of using that ability and doesn't get the associated bonuses such as greater physical strength, speed, or defenses even while using it.

Aside from Specialist type abilities, a nen user of any category can conceivably learn and use any other nen user's abilities, but it would be more difficult and less effective for them. Specialist abilities are unique to an individual and cannot be learned even by other specialists.

To translate that into other canons is a little difficult, but the basic idea is he can steal only things which are learned or trained for specifically, and not inherent to a species. Chrollo could conceivably steal Kamehameha and Flying from Goku, but wouldn't be able to steal becoming Super Saiyan or Goku's power level.

Another quirk of how Skill Hunter works is that it can also take special connections and training with it, as seen when he steals a Manipulator ability or a Conjurer ability.

Manipulators who rely on a tool have to have a strong connection with that object, usually built up over a number of years, and that object being broken or stolen usually renders that ability useless for quite some time. Chrollo is able to steal both the ability and the connection to the object, as seen when he voluntarily receives Shalnark's 'Black Voice' and the phone and antennae to use it.

Conjurers also have to go through incredibly amounts of training to be able to create their object of choice (most of the time), but Chrollo is able to steal a Conjurer ability and then conjure the item without doing any of the necessary training.

What it won't give him directly is a full understanding of the abilities limits, or any other skills that aren't directly related to the execution of the ability. This is seen when he steals 'Order Stamp' in that Chrollo initially expects it to work on corpses, as they're an inanimate mass just like a puppet in his mind, but for the original user corpses weren't the same as a puppet so it didn't work on them. He also had to learn what 'broken' means for a puppet to no longer be animated by Order Stamp, which turned out to be the separation of the head from the body; the conditions he learned only included that a puppet wouldn't continue to function once broken. Additionally, Chrollo gained no skill in making wooden puppets even though that was what the original ability owner did to make objects to animate with Order Stamp.

Skills In Bandit's Secret:

Black Voice; Mobile Fate Directior: Shalnark's ability to control other people, but as Chrollo is coming in without Shalnark's phone and antennae, he's going to remove this ability within the first day of his arrival.

Gallery Fake; Divine Left Hand, Demonic Right Hand: Kortopi's ability to touch an object with his left hand and produce an exact copy with his right, Chrollo will release this ability twelve days after arriving. The thought behind that being that if they're out there wondering where he is, returning the ability 12 days (for Kortopi being the Troupe member number 12) that they'll know he's alive and well.

Sun and Moon: Each hand applies a different mark, and when the two marks touch, they explode whatever they're on. A momentary touch creates a weak blast, to charge them to full strength Chrollo has to touch the target for 3-5 seconds. This is the one ability that remained in Chrollo's book due to 'post mortem' nen that becomes stronger after the owner dies. Due to the post-mortem nen aspect, it's almost impossible to remove these marks, and they will even force a conjured object that should vanish to continue to exist.

Convert Hands: One hand changes the Chrollo's appearance to match whoever he touches, the other changes the appearance of whoever he touches to match his current appearance

Order Stamp: works on non-corpse inanimate objects that meet certain criteria (basically, puppet-like things) and animates them. Orders have to be issued verbally and loud enough for the 'puppet' to hear it.

Indoor Fish: a nen beast that can only exist in an enclosed space. They bite chunks out of people, but people won't bleed, feel pain, or die until the nen fish vanish.

[unnamed teleportation ability]; can be used to teleport a nearby person to another nearby spot, the fact that we don't see Chrollo use this except once to relocate Nobunaga indicates it's probably of limited utility.

Fun Fun Cloth; A Convenient Magic Handkerchief: A conjured cloth that can be thrown over things, once it's wrapped around something or multiple somethings it shrinks down along with its contents until it's the size of a small coin purse.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Being appointed as leader of the Troupe: When Chrollo first proposed the idea of what would become the Phantom Troupe he asked Uvogin to be their leader, but Uvogin quickly denied that and stated that Chrollo was the leader. With a unanimous vote from the founding members three years before the Troupe became active as a band of thieves, Chrollo was chosen to be the leader of the Troupe despite his wishes.

Despite the fact that he never wanted the job, Chrollo does it extremely well. Everything from the number of Troupe members to their symbol, the twelve legged spider, was thought out and planned by him. But even though he's the leader, from the very start he emphasized that he was as replaceable as any other troupe member, and there would be times when a 'leg' of the spider had more value than the head.

We see very little of who Chrollo is under the facade he wears as the Troupe Leader, mostly the kind and emotional boy he was a child, and the somewhat sarcastic inner monologue he has during his fight with the Zoldycks and immediately afterwards before anyone arrives. He has reshaped his entire aesthetic and persona to suit Chrollo, leader of the Phantom Troupe.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

There are very few lines Chrollo won't cross to pursue his goals, and even mutilating a living opponent doesn't so much as make him flinch. He actively chose to become a villain feared around the world because he felt that best suited his goals. In terms of personal preferences Chrollo states he dislikes using cheap tricks, and in the killing spree leading up to his fight against the Zoldycks he allows most of his victims to see him before they die.

He's capable of being incredibly cruel and sadistic, but only when he either sees a strategic reason or has emotional motivation behind it.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

Resolve and a strong will. When he's saying what they'll need to carry out their revenge for Sarasa the last thing he adds is 'one more thing, something very important'. The will and ability to follow through with something is not only important for the difficult work the Troupe does, but it's very important for nen users as well.

When looking for Troupe members, Chrollo looks for a strong will as well as ruthlessness, but also abilities that will be useful to the spider. A willingness to face death is also very important to him, Chrollo is willing to die for the sake of The Spider, and he expects the same of any other Troupe member.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Chrollo is very critical of himself when he makes even small mistakes, and when those mistakes lead to people he cares about getting killed or hurt it weighs very heavily on him. He blames himself for Sarasa's death, and becomes very visibly distraught and depressed when Shalnark and Kortopi are killed after his fight with Hisoka.

What is their sign, and why?

The Tower

Chrollo is extremely good at finding weaknesses in the plans and abilities of other people. He also causes dramatic changes on the international level by disrupting the balance of power among the entire world's mafia families.

Even before that, before he was set on his path of revenge he was viewed as having a great deal of promise and there was talk of bringing him into discussions with the elders.

Chrollo, and the Phantom Troupe, are well known to act outside the orders of the ruling body of Meteor City, taking matters into their own hands. Notable cases of this are their attack against the Mafia, which threatened the relationship between Meteor City and the Mafia, and Chrollo choosing to steal the nen ability of one of Meteor City's elders.

Character Background

Big Spoilers for Recent Manga about Phantom Troupe Background
• History: Wiki Background
• Core Relationships:

Sarasa
Possibly the most impactful core relationship Chrollo has ever had, and also the most CW heavy one. Sarasa was the kind of kid that was friends with everyone and everyone was friends with, and she was very kind and compassionate. Her death, and the particularly cruel and gory method of her death and the scene left behind heavily altered Chrollo's life path. Before that he was an extremely kind and sharing child, and very emotionally open to everyone. He collected flowers every day for the graves of all the children who were killed or went missing, and used his incredible intellect for things like learning new languages and then using those language skills to create fandubs for the 'troupe' to voice act.

After that, he devoted all his energy and attention to getting revenge, and going much further than that. Not only did he want to kill the people who did that to her, he wanted to kill all the people who did that and other things to people. He wanted to make it so there would never be another child killed like Sarasa was in Meteor City ever again. Even though he knew it wasn't what she wanted, he said if he ever met her again he would apologize, but that he was going to kill a lot of people and be feared around the world.

Uvogin Uvogin went from being the most feared bully to Chrollo's most devoted 'follower', and they've always had a somewhat complicated relationship. Uvogin held a 'territory' of a large part of the junkyard that's the outskirts of Meteor City and doesn't let people 'take' anything that's in that area despite the view Chrollo and others hold that the stuff in the dump belongs to all of them. In the series of events that are the main catalyst for who Chrollo becomes as an adult he 'steals' a tape from Uvogin, and after they show the tape he goes to see Uvogin to accept whatever Uvogin decides because Chrollo, in his own words 'did take the tape without asking'.

But Sarasa 'dubs' over Uvogin, telling Chrollo he liked the show and that his opinion of him has improved, and she then tells Uvogin she dubbed over him. In Uvogin's own words, he asks if there are more episodes, and tells Chrollo to let him do the voice of the next monster. Then he tells Chrollo that more than any punch he's ever taken, that show really rocked him, and they shake hands.

From there, when he's not practicing, Uvogin dedicates his time to searching for more tapes, but says it's hard to look for something specific, it's like looking for a needle in a haystack especially because they don't know if there are any more tapes. While they're discussing what they should do when they run out of episodes, Uvogin says that what they're doing is really amazing. That he used to just want to have something, anything, for himself, but he finally knows what he wants in life. He wants to travel the world performing on stage with Chrollo and be the best villain he can be, and knowing what he wants in life and being able to define it is amazing. That moment is a key part of their close relationship, as Chrollo is very affected by hearing Uvogin say that and knowing what a positive impact he had on the older and bigger kid who used to torment them.

Uvogin was the first one to decide to leave Meteor City to get revenge for Sarasa, but Chrollo asked him to wait for just three years. He managed to convince him it would be better to wait and prepare, and that when they were ready to seek revenge, they would go and do it together with Uvogin as the leader of the troupe. In Chrollo's mind, Uvogin's unwavering resolve and willingness to resort to violence made him the ideal leader for what they would have to do, and he was certain that Uvogin was the best man for the job. Uvogin, however, quickly told Chrollo no because Chrollo was the leader of the troupe, and with an impromptu show of hands, Chrollo was selected as the leader instead. Uvogin promised that with Chrollo as the leader, he would follow him until his death.

It wasn't what he wanted, and according to interviews from the author Chrollo never thought he was the best person for the job or even worthy of having the position, but accepted it rather than go against everyone else's wishes. Despite being one of the members of the Phantom Troupe to spend the least amount of time with Chrollo they have one of the strongest bonds. Uvogin may be the most zealously loyal towards Chrollo's ideal of the Spider, and follow Chrollo's ideology that the survival of The Spider is more important than any individual, something that Chrollo's other close friendships sometimes have difficulty with. For Chrollo, Uvogin is the embodiment of the kind of resolve and ruthlessness necessarily to fulfill the goals of The Spider not just to kill those they're meant to hunt, but to inspire fear at their very name.

Pakunoda Of the long-running Phantom Troupe members, Pakunoda is probably one of the ones to spend the most time with Chrollo. He, and several others in the troupe, value her life above their own because her ability is much more vital and much harder to replace. Chrollo is the head of the spider, but he made it clear from the beginning that while his orders were the top priority, his life was not the top priority. Natural law dictates that the legs blindly follow the head, but that's just the chain of command. If he dies, another can replace him, and there may be times when a limb is more important than the head.

In addition to having been friends with and respecting Pakunoda, she's one of their main intelligence gatherers and as the one responsible for planning their 'heists' and making decisions he has to work with her closely and frequently. While she's very ruthless, Pakunoda is among the 'softer' members of the Phantom Troupe, and when it comes time to make a judgment call on whether or not Chrollo should be sacrificed for the survival of The Spider, she decides that they still need him. That they aren't ready to go on without him.

In the end she commits suicide for The Troupe, using her ability to pass on all of her memories knowing that it will kill her, to give the Phantom Troupe better odds of getting an exorcist for Chrollo and preventing them from killing her and several others to eliminate the possibility that they're being controlled. She dies with her last thought being that she wants to be the last of them to die. Chrollo doesn't find out about her death for quite some time afterwards due to the restriction that will kill him if he communicates with any of the Phantom Troupe.

Shalnark One of Chrollo's oldest friends, and another member of the Troupe who spends more time with Chrollo. His intelligence gathering skills aren't nen based, but instead due to his technology skills and possession of a Hunter License. He's often relied on to do research or to relay Chrollo's orders, or have tasks delegated to him to organize the others for.

Shalnark is the most cheerful and emotionally open members of the Troupe, and was a close friend of Chrollo's longer than all others except perhaps Franklin. Chrollo appreciates Shalnark's upbeat and cheerful personality, particularly since Shalnark even manages to make it work when the Troupe is 'putting on a show' and be both cheerful and terrifying.

Nobunaga
Nobunaga was always closer to Uvogin than Chrollo, and also very emotional. But he also volunteered, alongside Uvogin, to be the 'assault unit' of the Phantom Troupe, meaning he and Uvogin would go into situations with the greatest chance of getting people killed. They were also expected to be the ones to put themselves between more vulnerable/difficult to replace Troupe members and danger if needed.

Despite his volatility and the fact that Nobunaga's nen ability is only fully effective when he's fighting by himself, Chrollo has complete faith that he'll do his job. However, Nobunaga is to some extent one of the softer and more empathic members of the Troupe, despite also being one of the least likely to let an opponent walk away alive. He showed deep insight into Uvogin's personality, and reads the feelings and mindset of others based on their actions fairly well.

A lot of Chrollo and Nobunaga's closeness is based around mutual respect for their protective instinct. While they also clash and disagree at times more than most others are willing to disagree with Chrollo, Nobunaga is very protective of Chrollo and when the troupe is presented with a situation where they might have to sacrifice Chrollo, Nobunaga is firmly opposed and willing to resort to violence for his point.

Franklin
The other longest-running friendship Chrollo has among the Troupe, Franklin was a longtime childhood friend of Chrollo's and very protective of him. When they were children, Chrollo was the 'second littlest' with only one of the kids close to them being younger/smaller. Uvogin might embody the ruthlessness and resolve Chrollo thinks of for The Spider to survive, but Franklin is level headed and is the one who is most able to think and see what's best for The Spider to survive.

As a result, Franklin is the one Chrollo can most trust to be the voice of reason and look at what is best for the Troupe's top priority; The Spider's survival, rather than the survival of any individual.

Phinks
Chrollo's other big childhood bully, but also known for being kind as well. Despite being one of the 'softer' members of the Troupe, Phinks was vocally in favor of ignoring the hostage exchange demands and taking the entire Troupe after Kurapika to retrieve Chrollo.

Much like Uvogin, Phinks and Feitan went from being a physical threat to close friends with Chrollo very quickly, but not nearly to the same initial level of devotion that Uvogin did.

Feitan
There's very little shown in either the manga or anime of Chrollo and Feitan interacting, and the few scenes where it does happen Feitan allows Phinks to do most of the talking. After Nobunaga, Feitan is the most likely to question Chrollo directly. He also has a somewhat unique role in the Troupe, being the person responsible for torture and interrogation when Pakunoda's mind reading isn't being used for one reason or another.

Machi
Machi initially only spent time around Chrollo due to Uvogin, as she was basically his lookout and sidekick, and it wasn't until after Sarasa's death that the two had any real reason to be close or work together as Machi chose not to participate in their fan-dubbing efforts initially.

Chrollo views Machi as a very important part of The Spider. Her ability is the only healing type ability they seem to have, but isn't as difficult to replace as Pakunoda's. He values her hunches very highly as well, and is willing to base important decisions on Machi's gut feeling because she's usually correct or close to correct.

Hisoka
Chrollo's relationship with Hisoka is complicated by their conflicting obsessive goals. As Hisoka explains, one of the ways to join the Troupe is by beating an existing member, a path Hisoka took on purpose when he defeated the previous number four.

While the reason behind that rule was never explained, it was most likely a precaution on Chrollo's part. Anyone who wanted to join and was strong enough to accomplish that could be a threat, and if necessary allowed for a means of replacing a member without resorting to infighting.

Hisoka's ability is devastatingly difficult to counter, useful even when known, useful both in solo fights, against multiple opponents, and alongside allies. Hisoka's difficult personality, tendency to not show up to jobs that he found boring, and the fact that he wasn't picked by Chrollo to join put him at odds with much of the rest of the Troupe.

Chrollo's behavior towards Hisoka was neutral, it was obvious he wasn't trusted completely, initially due to his means of joining, and then due to his apparent lack of commitment. Chrollo was also not happy that Hisoka managed to effectively infiltrate the Troupe for the purpose of fighting him, although he later used that to his advantage; for a while Hisoka was the only person who had a motivation to help Chrollo and who Chrollo was able to speak with.

After he's freed from Kurapika's chain, Chrollo chooses to deal with Hisoka before any other problem, of which there are several waiting for his attention. Although he does choose to spend time running away from Hisoka to gather abilities before fighting him. This means that Chrollo views Hisoka as either the most prominent threat to The Spider, the person most worthy of immediate retribution, or both.

Kurapika
It's never made clear if Chrollo intended to kill or recruit the 'chain dude' who they believed to have killed Uvogin, but Kurapika was definitely high on the priority list until Chrollo stole Neon's fortune telling ability.

When it seemed that chasing after Uvogin's killer was likely to result in more deaths, Chrollo's priority was the survival of The Spider. They might have been able to go after the 'chain dude' later, but Chrollo wasn't willing to lose five more people to possibly avenge one. No matter how much Uvogin's death hurts, the price is too high.

Kurapika's grudge makes him a threat, and the way nen works means he'll probably only grow stronger and more dangerous the longer they leave him alone, but he's also one they have to be cautious about.

The Spider

Chrollo's ideal of 'The Spider' is a living thing whose survival is more important than the individuals that make the head and legs of it. Its purpose is revenge and to become so feared that people will never target Meteor City, and as individuals, their priority is The Spider's survival.

As Hisoka explained to Kurapika, the Phantom Troupe are primarily thieves, but they also kill and occasionally dabble in philanthropy. What becomes of the profits of their theft isn't made clear, as Chrollo reportedly 'keeps the loot to admire it for a while and then sells it when he becomes bored with it', but the most likely explanation is that troupe members get a cut and then a lot of it goes to sending supplies to Meteor City.

There are also only two real rules in the Troupe, the first is to follow Chrollo's orders, and the second is that physical fighting isn't allowed and disputes are to be solved by coin flip.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Surviving the Zoldycks
The fight against Silva and Zeno is where we get to see the most of Chrollo's inner thoughts, which come across notably shorter and less wordy than when he's speaking in front of people. It seems to be at least a partly premeditated choice to engage in this fight, as Chrollo not only is the only member of the Phantom Troupe in the building, he also hired Illumi to kill the people who hired Silva and Zeno.

His main purpose was to steal both of their abilities, difficult against an opponent in combat and basically impossible against the two of them together. But he still manages to deal with the pair of them quite well even if he's saved from seemingly certain death only by Illumi calling in his own success at the last second.

Afterwards Chrollo asks Zeno which one of them would win one on one, and Zeno says it would be himself without a doubt, but it would be something else entirely if Chrollo was actually trying to kill him.

Chrollo is amused and impressed that Zeno saw through his plan at every step, and remains standing just until both of them leave the room. Right after that he allows himself to fall backwards onto the ground and complains out loud that he's so tired, and stealing their abilities is impossible. It's a rare show of Chrollo being relaxed and just himself when even around his Troupe and close friends he feels the need to project a calm and commanding persona as the leader.

Together We Are The Spider
Three years after Sarasa's death, Chrollo gathers the Troupe together to explain his plan and idea for the troupe. Here he outlines the idea of 'The Spider' with him as the head and them as the legs, and that while his orders are important, his life and death are not. Chrollo really and truly believes in this ideal, because while it's a personal grudge, the mission and goal of the Spider is much bigger than himself. He's perfectly willing to die if it means his friends and The Spider continue, and this moment represents when they move from planning and preparing to being finally ready to act.

It's the transition from child to adult, from leader in name to actual leader with all the responsibilities that entails.

Power Cleaners
Finding the Power Cleaners tape was the catalyst for the Troupe forming, and for a few weeks it seemed like it was going to set all of them on a more positive life path. They had something they were all working on together, a large and dedicated audience, and even a long term goal of traveling the world and performing plays.

It also helped Chrollo feel more accepted and involved. He was so much more intelligent than the kids even years older than he was, and translating the Power Cleaners from another language gave him a way to put those skills to use in a helpful way, something Chrollo previously lacked.

Skill Hunter
Chrollo admits that he really enjoys stealing new abilities and finding out their subtle nuances and most effective use, as well as the different strategic opportunities they offer. To Chrollo, making the ability his own while exploring the darkness of the original owner's soul is the true pleasure of a Skill Hunter. For him it's not just about the challenge of acquiring them, but the process of exploring and using the abilities in ways the original owner might not have anticipated.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Uvogin's Death
Uvogin's death is a big loss for Chrollo, but he doesn't seem willing to accept that Uvogin is truly dead and not merely captured and unable to return until he sees Neon's fortune for him. Before that point, while he plans and acts as if Uvogin is dead, there's still hope that he might come back, however slim it is.

When it becomes apparent that's not the case, Chrollo decides to make their attack on the mafia even bigger. The widespread battle and mayhem is what he believes Uvogin would have wanted, so he sends out new orders that result in the approaching Troupe members leaving trails of death and destruction in their wake.

Uvogin's death is also the first death among the 'original' members of the Troupe, and even when he's alone and not putting on an act in front of Neon, we see tears gathering in his eyes as he conducts his 'requiem' for Uvogin from high in the sky scraper.

Captured
Chrollo getting captured is something he handles fairly calmly, acting to provoke an emotional reaction from his captor and probe for weaknesses. He's a little surprised when he realizes Kurapika does have a weakness they can exploit in that he isn't actually willing to let the friends he left behind die.

Chrollo, meanwhile, is confident that he has no value as a hostage, and that the Troupe will make the right decision. Unfortunately Pakunoda has a different set of information than he does, and by the time they're together in the same room, Chrollo's mouth is covered and he's no longer able to speak.

Even afterwards, Chrollo doesn't spend time lamenting over what happened. Instead he turns his attention eastward, where his fortune from Neon indicated he would find help. State of mind is important for nen users, as doubt and uncertainty weakens one's abilities, and Chrollo more than demonstrates his ability to stay calm and composed even in a desperate situation.

Sarasa's Death
This is the point where Chrollo's previously hopeful dreams turn into violence, as he decides to not only kill the people who killed his friend, but to go after anyone else who is or might become a threat to Meteor City.

Finding her body the way he did absolutely crushed the part of him that was friendly and caring, and turned him against the rest of the world. He alludes to this when he says that he can kill people without feeling anything because they have no connection to him, and then corrects himself and says that it's really more complicated than that. Objectively he knows it's not what Sarasa would want, and that he's become the kind of villain he's hunting, but Chrollo doesn't seem to be capable of feeling much of an empathic connection to people who aren't 'his'.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers:

In order to use an ability Chrollo must do one of the following;

While the ability is in the book, the original owner is unable to use it, but abilities vanish from the book either when they die (in Trench even temporary deaths will count as 'dead' for the purpose of removing an ability) or when Chrollo chooses to remove the ability. There's an edge case in canon where one ability didn't leave the book after its owner died due to the way Nen sometimes becomes stronger after death, but I don't expect any situation where that could happen again to occur with the temporary death state of Trench.

The specifics of what it can/can't steal, and some of the odd side effects;

To translate that into other canons is a little difficult, but the basic idea is he can steal only things which are learned or trained for specifically, and not inherent to a species/setting.

• Blood Type: Darkblood
• Omen: Twelve Legged Spider
• Blessed Day: July 13
• Patron Pthumerian: Reckoning
• Blood Power Manifestation:

Creating small objects via reality manipulation and compression of his perception of time are two things that will be relatively easy for Chrollo to pick up as they overlap with things he already knows how to do via nen and nen training, but are unlikely to be relied upon much.

Chrollo's main use on manifesting and applying his darkblood will be reality altering via altering his own canon ability (to work on things other than nen), and temporary/long term altering of others abilities.

Nen is already heavily based on mindset of the user and has a very firm set of 'the bigger an effect the more aura it takes to do' so that translates well to darkblood and the cost concept of spilling/spending blood.

Chrollo will alter his own ability by using his darkblood to 'write' the corrections to the rules into Bandit's Secret and spend his blood to make the change. For other people it would be temporary while in Chrollo's presence or longer term if he puts a semi-permanent darkblood 'mark' on them.

Simply altering an ability to a similarly powerful useful one will be relatively easy and inexpensive; such as converting elemental fire to elemental lightning. Adding restrictions to an ability to make it weaker or altering it in a way that would make it stronger 'fire AND lightning' instead of just 'fire' would require a considerable blood investment.

It's also something he can only do to willing targets at first, and when he tries to progress to doing it to unwilling targets will become a bit of a contest of wills/how much extra bloodstone power he can bring along in order to make it flexible enough to work/fail as other players agree.
