in the new year i’m cannibalising any non aussie who makes a “australia was founded by criminals” joke who can’t tell me what year the convict system started and ended and what percentage of those people were below the age of 18

”australia was founded by criminals”

  1. australia is host to the world’s oldest surviving cultures, who were here long before australia was “founded”
  2. the criminals didn’t find australia. colonists and explorers from the british upper class did
  3. the criminals were penal slaves. and 80% of them received this fate for petty crimes. 33,000 of them were below the age of 20. children were forced to travel with their convict parents on disease ridden boats, torn from their parents and institutionalised into orphanages upon arrival
  4. there were literally people already here

recently when im tempted to say 'i'm gonna kill myself' i try to correct it into saying "im gonna walk into the river and become a trout" or some other form of that. this is my new thing

molabuddy

btw this has graduated into me just saying "the trout population will be affected" and then not elaborating

this post has genuinely helped me so i used it as inspiration for today’s hand lettering practice

mintios asked:

You recently said something about failures in AK's world building, but didn't elaborate on that further in that post.

Would you mind explaining /giving examples?

generally arknights’ biggest failures are with regards to how it handles the global south. despite improving over time, Sargon is still kind of a massive trainwreck for a variety of reasons, which i wrote about here and here. otherwise one of the biggest issues is that despite engaging heavily with the concept of empire, the actual perspective of people under colonialism is almost entirely absent. i adore Black Forest Wills A Dream and the Tara arcs but the only reason we even KNOW indigenous Columbians exist is because of two throwaway comments; one by Cannot in Vigilo and one by Skybox in Unrealized Realities. the indigenous people of Rim Billiton are only mentioned in supplemental media, there’s only IMPLICATIONS of south asia existing in Arknights at all with faceless characters like Private Patel/concepts like the Anasa and Indra’s codename, and southeast asia and west/central/south/east africa are totally absent so far. and finally there’s AK shooting themselves in the foot in early worldbuilding with things like making the Wendigo a key part of the setting and naming Lappland after a region named for a racial slur. their unwillingness to retcon these aspects is pretty distressing and unpleasant to the people whose mistreatment AK is trying to gesture at.
