What's up?

I was away all weekend and I am not even going to try to catch up on LJ - so if you have been up to anything interesting, let me know!

I was at Sock Summit in Portland Oregon, hanging out with some awesome friends.

so, what about those books?

I have gotten very far behind on my book reviews! So, in the interest of catching up, I'm giving up on a bunch of them. I'm going to post a list of everything I've read since then, and follow up with a few reviews to highlight the ones I liked best.

I want my summer back.

High temperatures for:
today - 93
tomorrow - 95
Wednesday - 99
Thursday - 95
Friday - 86
Saturday - 85

About half an hour after I got home from work today, it was 91.2 degrees outside in the shade and 81.6 degrees inside. Not exactly my preference. I live in this area for a reason, people!

Here is an interesting article about the temperature trends here, including these little factoids:

  • In a normal Seattle summer, we average 25 days a year at 80 or hotter, 10 of those 85 or hotter, 2 of those at 90 or hotter, and a 95+ every other year.  As of Friday, we're at 17 for 80+, 9 for 85+ and 2 for 90+.

  • Most number of days in a year at 90 or hotter was nine in 1958. On the other hand, we went through the three summers of 1999 to 2001 with no 90s.

  • Seattle has hit 100 just the once on July 20, 1994. We've hit 99 twice -- Aug 9, 1981 and July 23, 1991. We've hit 98 five times.

Record Highs for the upcoming week are:
  • Mon. July 27: 95, 1988
  • Tue. July 28: 97, 1988
  • Wed. July 29: 95, 1971
  • Thu. July 30: 94, 1960

So, if you hear me complaining about the temperature in the next week, well...

Tree branch

There's a large bush/small tree outside the window with a branch that's just a bit too long. It keeps scraping across the window and scaring the daylights out of me!

Weather Weirdness

I just noticed that it was actually quite sunny out and thought I might go out to the pool for awhile. Right before I was going to go, though, I heard great big rolling booms that I would have said were thunder except a) it hardly ever thunders here and b) it's sunny. So I stuck my head outside to see what was up and discovered a great big mass of ominous grey clouds, and the stra of a rainstorm.

Weather is so weird.

Bone Marrow Donation

From June 8 - 22, the National Marrow Donor Program is offering free registry to the first 46,000 people who sign up to join the registry.

Normally, the process of testing and registering one individual to the registry costs about $100 - and potential donors are asked to cover this cost themselves. This event, the "Marrowthon", is a fantastic opportunity to join the registry for free.

While I don't know anyone personally who has received a bone marrow or blood cell transplant, I have entirely too many family and friends who have battled cancer in one form or another. Marrow donation is one way that you might be able to help someone else. Really, how often do you have the chance to save a life?

Just for Lindsey (and Curt)

So I have this awesome friend linzbinz, and she grew up near where I live now. Problem is, for awhile I lived in the UK and she lived here. Then, when I moved here, she moved to the UK.

You can see this might present a problem, because when we are separated by 6000 miles it means we don't get to hang out very much.

BUT!!!

Lindsey's superawesome husband Curt just got accepted to a fancy program at a uni in Washington. This is because he's really smart and talented and worked very hard to get in.

So, while we won't be living as close as we could be, we will actually be in the same state and that means that we can hang out sometimes. What's a 4 or 5 hour drive compared to an 8 hour flight?

So, congratulations again, Curt, and thanks!. You deserve this opportunity, but also I am excited you guys will be that much closer to us! Yay!
