countlessuntruths: (I can't stand up)

... I'm actually considering writing my first 'Parent-Teacher' letter.

For those of you not aware of, I'm sort of Yumma's legal tutor, and I've been taking care of most of the stuff concerning parenting at her school, since most of the meetings and such happen when dad is still working and he can't attend them. And Yumma pretty much tells me everything about her school and classmates, so there's that.

Yesterday, Yumma came home sort of a little freaked out saying how two of her best friends were 'Nazi' and she was 'anti-nazi'. At first I thought that it was due to a debate: just a week ago, her course had a series of debates where children had to discuss serious topics and see if they could defend them properly, and during that week, Yumma had to defend children explotation, which she's obviously against. So yeah, it's a little weird to hear that but, if it had been THAT the case, I would have just rolled my eyes and carried on or something. It wouldn't have been a game but an exercise for the school.

But no, apparently, these two girls started calling themselves Nazi after having seen the movie Valkyrie. Now, I've not seen the movie, what I know about the movie is or anything other than the preview... but the fact is that these two fourteen years old girls suddenly decided that it would be 'fun' to call themselves Nazi and choose people in their classroom who could be 'Nazi' as well and who weren't. THAT was why Yumma came freaking out, because apparently, since the girls choosing were her best friends, she 'could have been a Nazi' but she WTFed at her friends idea of a game and told them so, so instead she was 'an antinazi'. And then, apparently, her friends kept on laughing about the idea.

... so yes. I'm seriously considering writing an email to the principal to warn about this and, I don't know. Perhaps for the History teacher to give a proper class about WWII? For them to at least watch some proper movies concerning that era? I. I really don't know, but I made the same expression Yumma did, and sort of felt dirty.

I don't know. I really hope I'm just overreacting.

I know I never comment on your journal, but this time I just couldn't resist since I'm in my final year of my education degree. I would suggest shooting off an email and at least making the teacher, if not the principal, aware of the situation. I could just see their little "game" that they think is oh so funny devolving into something downright cruel, and it's best to nip that sort of situation in the bud. Point blank, I think it would be a good idea for them to have at least a mini-lecture, or discussion on WWII era history. Hope anything I said helped out a smidgen, and I hope things improve soon :)

Send the email, just in case. If it´s just a joke that will wear off after a few days, then they will have learned something (assuming the teacher explains what Nazism is to them) and if it isn´t, then you might help stop something really bad.

Speaking as a teacher, send the email to both the teacher and the principal. That way both of them can be involved in making sure these girls understand just what 'being Nazi' means. Plus, if it has spread outside of your sister's class they can address everyone in that grade level if necessary. But at the very least, I think their teacher needs to have some sort of lesson on WWII and what the Nazi party did.

What everyone else said. It could be (if it isn't already) very cruel.

Joining the choir. Send the email. If it's nothing, then it's nothing but it has the chance of being very, very nasty.
[Valkyrie is about one of the attempted murders of Hitler, BTW.]

I'm sure I wouldn't, but then I lack all mothering instincts. I'd be more likely to just tell her friends they are being douchebags. I'm just more amazed at you for being so strong to take on a roll like that. *hugs*

Well in all honestly I would have TOTALLY feaked out if my friends started calling themselves Nazis. I've read WAY to much about WWII and the Holocaust to let that pass unchallenged. Yes, I would inform the school.
