We need to bring “read another book” type energy to like, fandom in general, and I’m not joking.

If you could go back 20 years an get people, at scale, to expand their taste in fiction beyond Harry Potter, we would not be here right now.

People focusing on the Harry Potter series on this post are missing the point.

The point isn't that Harry Potter itself is the problem, it's that a large fandom obsessed with one work, and only one work, to the exclusion of all other works, combined with a rapturous devotion to that specific creator, resulted in a socio-political landscape where one very popular author of children stories can single-handedly swing a society into a genocide.

Reblog this version

Pro-censorship wattpad refugees drama is so funny to me because when I started using ao3 as a kid I was a devout mormon and I thought that reading anything even remotely pornagraphic was a sin and would ruin my life. So when I was 13 and found ao3 I went "oh awesome I found a fanfic website with a filtering system so I won't ever randomly stumble into porn. This is great! I was really worried about seeing something I didn't want to see on the other platforms." I didn't read any smut online until like three years later. If a mormon 13 year old can figure out 'don't like don't read' wattpad users can too cmon you guys i believe in you.

Plz accept my addition to the Petra Parker trend.

Incase my handwriting or spelling is too bad the diolog is this:

Aunt May: Dear... You look so much like my sister these days! Is there anything you want to tell me?

Petra: Oh May, I was... BIT by... a... Radioactive- WOMAN?!

Aunt May: that's a really bad lie sweetie.

Listen.

EVERYBODY knows (or should) that you DO. NOT. STOP. in Vidor, Texas.

It’s best to just run out of gas elsewhere. Whatever you do, black folks, DO NOT STOP IN VIDOR, TEXAS.

There’s a good chance you’ll get lynched or just come up missing - and I’m not joking.

also do NOT stop in Harrison, Arkansas!!!! (relatively close to OK and MI) a nazi town with a BIG KKK organization.

the youtube notification of ''ooohh your video isn't starting up smoothly???? turn off your ad blocker you cunt <3'' is so pathetic to me bc it takes five seconds max. you think i can't wait five seconds? you think i need to give you money because five seconds is too long? i pity your wife.

Even as an advertiser (especially as an advertiser), I am convinced that outlawing advertising is the best thing we can do for our world now. More than gun control. More than tackling climate change. More than lowering the price of eggs. Removing these advanced manipulation tools would force everyone—politicians included—to snap back into reality. By outlawing advertising, the machinery of mass delusion would lose its most addictive and toxic fuel.

I started out reading this smugly saying to myself yeah, right.

But by the end I'm sold. Let's ban advertising.

We can start small, maybe with city ordinances. Then roll it out county wide, then at the state level. Once other states see how quiet and sane things can be, they'll adopt the ban too. The ones that don't will remain snarling islands of rage & delusion until the people move away.

Let's ban advertising.

the entire state of vermont already banned roadside billboards years and years ago. change is possible!!
