The Paradox is looking for new volunteers! This means you. Get your Community Service hours. Get free snacks. Get involved in your local scene.

The Paradox is a completely volunteer run venue - and non-profit, to boot! We are looking for more kids to join our team. If you're interested in learning about event operations, sound engineering, hospitality, writing CD and concert reviews or promotions (or really, anything you think of involving rock shows) - come on over for some snacks and some info. We'll have Paradox staff on hand to answer your questions and information to take away with you for yourself (and maybe your parents, too.)

Don't forget - if you're in high school and looking to complete your community service hours - volunteering for the Paradox counts towards those hours!

Head of Femur (mem. of Bright Eyes), Spinto Band, Dear Darling & Transistor Heart

"When Elvis Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan show, the cameramen were instructed to film Elvis’ pelvis no lower than the head of femur. Thus the head of femur is the point where rock and roll becomes sex, and we balance on top of it!" - Head of Femur Head of Femur is a Chicago octet formed in November of 2001 by Nebraska natives Mike Elsener(Solar Wind), Matt Focht (Bright Eyes) and Ben Armstrong (Commander Venus). With a large catalog of songs already taking shape by early 2002, Head of Femur began to recruit musicians to flesh out the lineup for live performance. The nature of the music demanded more than the traditional rock band instrumentation, so strings, trumpet, and orchestral percussion were added along with drums and bass. Following more than a year of touring with such acts as Bright Eyes and Rilo Kiley, and most recently Wilco - their new full-length record Hysterical Stars has just been released on spinART Records.

Locals Dear Darling have recently released their first full length album Songs of Friends and Family; a somber album but it's one that also possesses a beautiful sort of bitterness. And just like selfish depression itself, the band's melancholy batch of simplistic, honest indie rock is both comforting and tragic.


Delaware sextet Spinto Band is in the prime vein of musical prowess. Utilizing an indie-pop sensibility that brings to mind the Flaming Lips and Pavement, their songs can send you careening into the heights of lysergic bliss or provide the catchiest vibes to shake your tail feather to. Either way, this six-piece outfit has the goods to deliver us all from the doldrums of banality.

Transistor Heart features Cameron Elliott of the The Western States. Originally dubbed as a "recording project," Transistor Heart has seen some interest lately in the local scene, and Cameron has found himself playing a few live shows in the process. A bit folkier than the States, Transistor Heart is sure to please.

Some By Sea

Some By Sea's decisively pop escapades are a swirling mix of
instrumentation and delicately balanced male/female vocals. Lead singer
Chris Du Bray carves wonderful lovelorn vignettes reminiscent of the
narrative stylings of Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Weakerthans’ songsmith John Samson. A beautiful melancholy, the group’s approach to songwriting allows the even the hardest of hearts to melt.
