Important message for file movers

edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators.

Category:Elizabeth

edit

Elizabeth has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

edit

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Tilia in Buigy-l'Abbé. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 06:34, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

And again about a month ago for Category:Tilia euripea leaves. I'm deleting it now; if you had tagged it correctly, it would not have take weeks for someone to run across it. - Jmabel ! talk 00:17, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Surcatégorisation

edit

Bonsoir, merci de ne pas surcatégoriser. J'ai noté que tu rajoutais des "20XX in Somme" à des catégories comportant déjà "20XX in Somme by month" qui est déjà, bien entendu, une catégorie fille de "20XX in Somme". Merci et bonne journée. --Birdie (talk) 16:13, 6 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Similarly for Category:Violet flowers in Cévennes, which I just ran across weeks after you blanked it. If you'd done this with {{SD}} it probably would have been gone in a couple of days. - Jmabel ! talk 05:14, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Move from Category:Knautia arvensis (flowers) to Category:Knautia arvensis in Germany

edit

Hi APictche, this action was wrong. There is no reason to remove Category:Knautia arvensis (flowers) if you add Category:Knautia arvensis in Germany. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 07:31, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

And, by the way, addition of the less specific Category:Knautia (flowers) is also wrong. Please rather refrain from mass categorization if you don't know exactly that you are doing the right thing. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 07:48, 8 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!

edit

2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!

edit

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

Here are your top three winning images:

You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Regards,
ZI Jony

Luscinia svecica in West Bengal

edit

May I ask why are you recreating so small sub categories of bird species? It's not the best way to organize or categorize bird species. Paramanu Sarkar (talk) 07:19, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

What do you think of :"Luscinia svecica by country| " ? APictche (talk) 07:22, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
As far my understanding Species are better not categorized by location as also not accepted in Valued images participation as a scope. Location categories are to be added separately along with species like birds of specific location. I used to do the same mistake earlier unless an Admin from commons helped me with this. Please check this file as an example of what kind of categories are added to this file. I hope this helps. Paramanu Sarkar (talk) 07:37, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I stop my contribution in this direction....
For the time.... APictche (talk) 07:44, 21 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
My pleasure to help. Just a suggestion, If you are specifically interested in birds and want to contribute regarding species, you may create sub categories of species by gender if identifiable or by specific actions as these sub categories are also accepted as Valued images scopes.
