I wanted to know before i waste however much money per month on gamers online. comments would be appreciated

mobs! Rabble Rabble Rabble!

hi again, adam here.

people who have done some cyberstudies or other new media kinds of classes might be familiar with the writing of Howard Rheingold (it was in the course reader for New Comm Tech both last year and this year).

he has a number of interesting books around the place, some of which are available for download from his website. I think his famous work on "Virtual communities" is there, and is a bit dated these days.... but it is an interesting read to see what early internet studies was like.

i will speak more about some of that in my "history of new media" lecture in week 5.

what i wanted to draw your attention to is the most recent of Rheingold's books is called "Smart Mobs". it is about mobile computing devices and how they will become part of our everyday media experience... it is very accessible and a really good read if you are interested in internet things more generally. There are a few copies of it in the Griffith Library system, and it is also available in the Gold Coast and Brisbane Council libraries so you should have no trouble finding it if you are interested.

as well as the book, howard also has a Blog of his own which deals with mobile technologies:

http://www.smartmobs.com/

check it out if you're keen to keep up with news about mobile technologies and sometimes other broadly related issues....

*** There is a livejournal feed of that blog, which means you can subscribe to the feed and when Howard adds a new entry to his blog, it will appear on your livejournal "friends" page (which is where you can see anything that your livejournal friends post). Click this link here to add the feed to your friends list.

No Maps

Last night I watched the William Gibson documentary "No Maps for These Territories"

Just wondering if anyone else has seen it and what they thought...

I thought it was pretty interesting, and I thought one good moment was when he asked when people will stop using the prefix "cyber", just as we know assume that everything is electric and have stopped using the 50s/60s-era prefix of "electro" to describe things.
