events

The "Wake Up to Your Life" meditation group has invited Seattle-based Buddhist teacher George Draffan to Columbus to lead a series of programs during the last week of January. See the brief descriptions (below) for more information.

I'm also attaching a pdf file which has a full description of the programs. We'd really appreciate any help you may can offer to get the word out. Consider printing up a copy of each and posting them at your home sangha's community bulletin board, or forwarding them to people from your sangha's e-mail list.

Please reply to this e-mail or go to www.naturalawareness.net for more information.

The events:
Embodied Energy. January 28th at the Elizabeth Blackwell Center. 9am to 4 pm workshop on raising energy and being present in our bodies. For those who find sitting meditation a challenge, we'll introduce several ways of bringing ease and comfort so that the body and mind can settle naturally. And we'll show how walking and moving meditation can release a joyful flow of energy.
All Paths Are Not the Same. January 28th at the Upper Arlington Public Library. 7-845 pm.
There are different paths of practice in Buddhism. We'll explore how they're different and how they fit together, and suggest ways to follow a path that addresses your needs and aspirations.

Entering the Way: Awakening as a Way of Life. For many of us, sustaining a consistent practice is an ongoing challenge. This weekend retreat in Yellow Springs will explore ways to find the personal motivation and the practical supports that make your practice sustainable -- to transform spiritual practice into a way of life.

finding a teacher

So, I am going to begin the process of finding a teacher here in Columbus, and might as well chronicle my search, and might as well do it here :)

The goal? Find a teacher. This seems to me to be essential to my continued growth as a Buddhist.

The path? Check out each Buddhist gather in town, forget any previous dealing or thoughts I had about them, and as long as they have an English speaking participation option, I'll check it out.

So, http://www.buddhismcentralohio.org/ offers a list arranged alphabetically to start with. Away I go...

Remembering to Breathe retreat

Remembering to Breathe
a residential retreat in Pickerington Ohio, with George Draffan

sponsored by the Columbus
Wake Up To Your Life group

September 4-6, 2009

In the traditional teachings of the Buddha, the body is the first foundation of awareness. Breathing is the constant activity of our bodies. Grounded in the breathing body, we can calm our fears, craving, and anger. As reactive emotions are calmed, confusion clears and we see what is arising in us and in our world. We come to know what creates struggle, what releases suffering, what is ever-changing, and what is reliable.

Join us for a weekend exploration of the path of awareness and compassion. Our instruction and
practice will be based in the Natural Settling tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, and in the Anapanasati(Mindfulness of Breathing) Sutta — one of the basic meditation manuals of Theravada Buddhism.

To cultivate flexibility and balance energy, we’ll also practice walking meditation and gentle qigong movement exercises.

The retreat is suitable for beginning and experienced meditators, and will be limited to 15 people to allow for full participation.

If you have questions about the retreat, contact George Draffan (george@naturalawareness.net) at 206-723-4276

The cost of the retreat is $150. To reserve your place contact

Noon meditation gather

We are going to start a new gathering!

Our current thought is Wednesday afternoon gathering, hopefully at noon. My thought is one hour in length (for those attending during there lunch time), 25 minutes of meditation, check in, dharma talk.

We have a possible location in mind, but are hoping to find a different one. Anyone advise us on a location? Anyone interested in joining us?

Warmly,
Dan
