Just watched an odd movie loosely about space and madness (Moon) but more about alienation, fear, and the future. It's very 2001: Space Odyssey homage w/ Kevin Spacey as HAL (whose name is Gertie in this simplified version of the same). The music is an odd 80s throwback, as is some of the fashion, haircuts and shoes. The set design (it's essentially shot in one room with a few overused sequences of lunar rover and moonscape thrown in for variety) manages to be unobtrusive and not smack of any particular era (a harder accomplishment than the easier 80s shorthand). They simplified the cast - it's one dude. Considering the whole movie is resting on his acting, he does a good job. I didn't particularly enjoy the movie and was peripherally aware of the one-cast and one-box set design through the whole movie -- that being said, it's low budget w/o feeling impossibly low budget. Music very _very_ well done, though I'd have preferred a philip glass score to the more blandly futuristic guy they chose.
Some of the use of walking and tripping w/in a confined/extremely limited set area is a direct nod to Cube, though I don't know where they got it from prior to that movie. It's more smoothly done than in Cube (both in acting and in design) and adds a physical depth to the really extremely limited movement options.
Brother (Cory) and dad - hated it. I can't say I blame em. My enjoyment was largely cerebral geekitude rather than entertainment.
