God is good—in all things

Got in my car to go to work this morning, and the first thing I noticed when going down the street was that it was no longer pulling hard to the left. I've had alignment problems all summer long and have just lived with it because there's no money for car repair right now. I'd just gotten to the point of deciding that it needed to get fixed, regardless, because with winter coming it could be a serious safety issue. But now it was completely normal. Praise God! Of course, I immediately recalled that last week, upon the realization that repair needed to be a priority, I had spoken a short prayer about the matter.

God is so faithful, even when we are forgetful of His sovereignty. Why is it that we are so unwilling to trust Him? We will pray about emotional issues, about relational issues, maybe even about financial issues when we're in dire straits, but we so seldom seek God when we want direct physical intervention in our lives. Do we lack faith? Are we conditioned (despite knowledge to the contrary) to think that "real" miracles are "not for today"?

So, gentle readers, remember that God is in control of all things, and better yet, He loves you and is concerned about all facets of your life. He is faithful, and I am so thankful for and humbled by reminders like this one.

He Is Risen!

Wishing a very joyous Resurrection Day to all my friends out there. Have a great weekend, enjoying your family and your relationship with Him. Anybody have an interesting or fun tradition you'd like to share?

Glock 19/26

Small enough for CC, large enough to stop, decent capacity for the size, common ammo, good reputation. Bonus - a local friend would let me try his out before I buy one. Opinions or thoughts?

commitment to prayer

My prayer life has been very poor for quite some time, but in the past couple weeks I've started to expend a bit more energy to rectifying that. I've been thinking about committing a week to prayer and fasting on behalf of the nation prior to the election. (Hopefully it will be a good jump start for me generally.) Having never done that for as long a period before, I'm wondering if anyone has any practical advice for me.

networking

I readily admit that networking is my weakest area in terms of being a systems admin. Application config I'd say I'm pretty good, OS config I can generally handle, network config I can get through simple stuff but I often scratch my head trying to understand what's really happening to make it all work. What can I do to get myself up-to-speed in this area?

NIS/NFS help

I want to set up NFS at home, and since I'm not looking forward to syncing all my UIDs (which I'll likely end up doing anyway) and keeping them synced going ahead, I probably should set up NIS too. Anybody know of a good, no-nonsense howto/reference for this? Something that would be kind to my poor, networking-challenged brain?

font geek

I find myself becoming a font geek. I notice particular typefaces used in signage, and recognize them and know their names. I try to collect digital typefaces that evoke certain moods/periods (Old West, early American) or that recreate well-known images (titles of a TV show, or the brand name on a pop can). I want to find outline versions of each and every Macintosh "city" font. I find myself desiring certain "new" designs that I think would be useful, and wonder how hard it would be to make with FontForge—as if I need yet another hobby that there will be no time for. My life would be so much more productive if I could focus and channel my energy into two or three pursuits rather than having such a multitude of diverse interests that go nowhere.

*sigh*

Ten pounds up from last time I weighed. Suckola. Funny it didn't happen during the holidays, but in January. Time to start making use of that gym membership again!

My parents were in town last weekend, and it was a good visit. Between that and our own Christmas cooking, we are stuffed to the gills with leftovers. We have to store desserts and beverages on a shelf in the garage because our refrigerators are full.
