To dream...

I am, i will admit, a little surprised that this account is still here. I've been on FB primarily for years now, and haven't logged in for a very long time. But, here it is, with a few old thoughts, old updates.

I'm thinking of migrating off FB onto Dreamwidth - although it looks shockingly like LJ. Does LJ still have any community left? I should investigate...

Edinburgh Marathon

In case you haven't seen me in the last 6 months, or have managed to filter out everything I've said on what is now my only topic of conversation, I'm running the Edinburgh Marathon on the 22nd May.

Details of how to sponsor me are here

If you are able to support me by pledging even a token amount, I'd appreciate it, and it may give me the extra impetus I need on the day to get to the finish line.

I'll have one aftermath, please. Oh, and what will that cost including VAT?

Further to the burglary, sorting out the problems is not going to be cheap...

So, a break-in without damage, and the value of things stolen under £250 is likely to cost me somewhere around £500 + £100 + £750 +£20 = £1370. Plus all the lost time, lost work, and the cost of my increased paranoia as a result of this. And that's for someone fully comprehensively insured.

I think I may invest in a house alarm, a safe, and a sentry gun for the back.

Burgled!

And not burglarised, as some Americans would have you believe.

Went out for the day to see my sister, Dom, Al & Kate for a save-the-world-from-unspeakable-evil (aka Arkham Horror). Lovely evening, no problem. Came home and found the front door latched from the inside. On further investigation, it was clear that someone had broken in and half-inched a few things.

Most notable of which is my laptop. Fortunately I'd recently backed up my personal folders including all my game notes for FFTAC. Unfortunately the disk I'd backed up onto is also gone. I may have another copy somewhere, but it's a long-shot.

Most annoyingly, the spare house keys, and the spare car keys are also gone. I've moved the car away aways, and will probably move it to work until I can get the locks replaced. I expect a locksmith will be needed Monday.

So - first post in ages, I've been wondering how to resurrect the account. So something of a silver lining. And of course, nobody died, and nothing is destroyed - the true severity can be deduced that my RPG notes are what I'm most worried about. Just very... unsettling. Now comes several days/weeks/months of paranoia about the new TV, the CD/DVD collections and the car.

Still breathing

I have a fear that my account will die if I don't post something on it at least once a year.

I think a full update on my life by now would be impossible; what's happened since September 2005?

  • New Job, much like the old job.
  • General slobbing, and purchase of toys
  • New creative stuff - FFT, Labyrinth etc
  • New house, joint with Girlf

The house is pretty cool, for London anyway. Got spare crash space, if ever I win the war against the boxes.

Why am I writing an update now? Displacement activity. I'm studying again. After this, I'll probably clean the entire house, sharpen some pencils & make a hot cup of tea.

    So close to home...

That it barely seems worth updating. In fact, the lack of any updates in all Vietnam makes this one likely to go on for a while. The Gibbon will try to keep to the interesting bits.

We're back all too soon. Personally, I've missed you all, and as most of you are back home, Í can't wait.

    Drug side-effects

I've been on Doxycycline intermittently since entering Thailand. It's an anti-malerial that is basically a kick-ass antibiotic.

It's the anti-malerial of choice for two main reasons. One, it's slightly cheaper. Two, it's side-effects are all physical, not mental, and the severe reaction (photosensitivity) is apparently either you get it or you don't, not something everyone gets when taking it to some minor degree.

Intermittently, because Thailand's central tourist areas, like Bangkok, the islands etc, are pretty much maleria free, and I only took the stuff to check for side-effects before I actually needed to be using it every day. And to my surprise, I'm fairly certain that I'm getting a side-effect not listed on the card - depression.
