Upkeeping my human anatomy with the most alive Sandwing sister

you guys will flay me but Im glad winter doesn’t stay at JMA at the end of arc 2 and I DO have reasons for this

Redesigning: Sandwings!

Much like the Nightwings, Sandwings are one tribe that I struggled to redesign: purely because I am already quite happy with how they are. There are LOGICALLY a lot of different routes I could take (Spiky lizard variant, desert fox variant etc…) but nothing I really wanted to change about the original tribe.

So, I didn’t change anything! Kind of. I chose to focus more on what was already there, exaggerating the tail barb and thinking about patterns that a sandwing might have.

The more I do these, the more I question whether ‘redesign’ is the right word for this series. Maybe 'tweak’ fits more?

Tribe Features:

• Scorpion tail barb.
• Thicker tail - much like a Seawing,but it grows thinner near the barb. The tail has more musculature than that of other tribes, making venom strikes more dexterous and powerful.
• Dark Sclera - not necessarily black. Pupils are usually a lighter color.
• Frills that run down the spine.
• Intricate patterns

I definitely think that the Sandwings should stand out through patterns: These could be snake scale patterns, scenes of the desert or markings inspired by certain cultures! Some of you may recall the Algerian sandwing fashion post? I’m thinking of that right now.

it’s only fair that the Sandwings are a crafty tribe - beyond trades of art, they also have a knack for blacksmith work and stone carving. These trades were born out of necessity. Living in a harsh environment turns creativity into a survival skill: one that the Sandwings have been using for a long, long time. However beautiful their craftsmanship is, it is equally as purposeful and efficient.

Sometimes I remember I’m a COMIC artist and I make a comic. I’ve been testing my comic style a lot so expect no consistency.

This piece is a follow-up from a Qinter comic I did some time ago! If you caught the callback, you get 10 points. One day, Moon will run out of patience for these hopeless idiots.

Redesigning: Rainwings!

Next in my list are the Rainwings, which I have dutifully designed two subspecies for: The Chameleon and Bird of Paradise variants!

I’ve always liked the original Rainwing design, but for some reason I literally NEVER make Rainwing OCs. I think the color palette freedom freaks me out. Being part of the rainforest, I imagine Rainwings have a near-limitless range in appearance: most dragons carry features from both variants, but select locations still harbor a dominant variant population.

Chameleon features:

• Curled tail, which is more dexterous in a rainforest setting.
• Large webbed frills.
• Color-changing scales and wing membrane.

Bird of Paradise Features:

• Straighter tail with a feathered tip, which can take on many shapes/sizes.
• Secondary feathered ‘wingtips’ which usually sit around the hind legs/waist area. These are not connected to the main wing, but I can’t for the life of me remember what they are usually called!
• Feathered wings and frills. This variant’s scales can still change color, but the feathers cannot.

When redesigning this tribe, I wanted to look at different ways to reflect the ecology of rainforests/tropical ecosystems. I love birds of paradise, and I was like… wait a minute… that’s a GREAT idea! I imagine that these birdlike rainwings follow similar behavior patterns to the actual Birds of Paradise - they are flamboyant and eager to show off. During the ancient times, they may have taken these talents to Phyrria in the form of preformance!

By contrast, the chameleon variant is much slower. They are calm - maybe a little bit stubborn - and prefer to lay around when they can. Maybe they fall out of trees when they get too cold, just like those iguanas in florida. I don’t care if that’s a different animal because it’s funny to think about.
