The sun shone down on them with heated rays of light that would make a man blind if he looked too closely. Dear Zeus, Apollo had it in for her today. It wasn’t like she had meant to accidentally spill ambrosia elixir all over his favorite sandals. With a sigh, Eris wiped at her brow and cleaned away the sweat that had yet to stop since she stepped foot on the mortal realm to replace Apollo’s precious sandals.

Being only a young goddess, Eris didn’t know many on this realm and the fact that she stood alone, made her feel isolated.

Vulnerable.

“Damn you Apollo and your silly vanity. Why can’t I simply conjure you new ones?” She asked to the sky and she would swear the sun grew all the hotter, scalding her skin. “Fine fine. Just stop with the heat, please. Unless you like your mortals so fried they can no longer pay tribute to you.” The heat dimmed. Finally

Making her way east, Eris spotted a young boy sitting among a field of corn. “Hello, young boy ” She cried, happy to see another living being. The second the boy looked up, his eyes grew wide as his mouth hung open.

“B..be...” He stuttered.

She ran to him until she could no longer and bowed down to calm her breathing. “Little...boy...where are your parents?”

The blonde boy continued to stutter. “Bee...tu...”

She frowned and went down one knee. “Are you alright?”

Being a goddess of discord, she never toyed with children. They were the only innocence she refused to have any part in. Call it a weakness for mortals or a principle.

Truly, she could care less what others thought.

Touching his forehead to check of any fever, she found that he was perfectly fine, save for a scrap on his knee. “What’s your name?”

“Bee..tif...tif...”

“What?”

There was a laugh from behind. “He’s trying to say your beautiful.”

Spinning on her heel, she quickly put herself between the intruder and the boy. “Who goes there?”

More laughter before a young man with sandy brown hair jumped out from the fields. “Callistor, the young lad’s older brother.”

Narrowing her eyes on him, she crossed her arms over her chest. He did indeed look a lot like the boy now that he mentioned it. But that didn’t mean she would back away so easily. “Really? And why, Callistor, would you leave the youngster here all alone?”
She was surprised to find a spark of anger at those words. Why, she had no clue considering that that was what she did. Cause discord, mischief, get a rise out of others. So why did his reaction shock her? “The, youngster, loves to runaway while the others nap. I came out in search of him, princess.”

A twitch worked over her eye at the endearment. “My name is not princess.”

“Yes, but I do not know it. Quite like you do not know anything of me or my family.”

Eris, frowned. “Obviously you are blind. For you would have noticed who I”

“Beautiful ” The boy finally managed. He jumped up, limping from his scrapped knee and shouted “Beautiful ” Proud that he could finally get the word out Reaching for her hand, he covered it with both of his dirty ones and smiled up at her. Normally, she shied away from mortal contact, but the boy had taken her so off guard that she was grateful he wasn’t harmed as she first thought.

Callistor rolled his eyes but gave a light hearted laugh. “First real word and to a woman no less. Figures. He only warms up to people he likes. And that’s a very small category.”

Leaning down, Eris shuffled the boy’s hair with her hand and smiled when he laughed before hugging her leg. “What is his name?”

“Iamus.”

She blinked. Funny, that was the name of one of Apollo’s illegitimate son’s.

Brushing his hair through her hands once more, she leaned forward and gave a quick peck to his cheek where they grew rosy. “Your very cute Iamus.”

Callistor laughed. “Aww, look at that. He’s blushing.” The boy glared at his older brother and hid behind Eris’ dark blue dress.

She chided. “Your simply jealous that he’s a better lady’s man then you.”

An eyebrow went up on the youth’s face. “Really? How so?”

There was giddiness in her chest that she couldn’t quite identify and yet didn’t really wish to erase either. She gave a cocky smile. “Well from the time you stepped out, you did not receive a kiss unlike your brother who has done so and also the approval of a woman. Isn’t that right Iamus?”

The boy gave a giggle and nodded in agreement.

“See?” Eris tilted her head, playfully but wasn’t prepared for the look in the man’s eyes. Was that...amusement? Anger, rage, sadness and sometimes fear would play in a being when she did her work but...amusement? That was her gift. No one else’s.

Suddenly the sound of a shrill call from the left had them all cover their ears in pain.
“CALLISTOR HURRY UP AND BRING YOUR BROTHER BACK FOR SUPPER ”

“Damn that woman and her vocal chords. You’d think the gods would be so kind as to make her mute for the rest of us who wish to hear again.” Callistor muttered, rubbing at his ears like he had a ringing in them that didn’t wish to cease.

Eris was having a similar problem. “What. In the world was that?”

“Otrera, our older sister.” Callistor said as he made to grab Iamus who ducked and hid on the other side of her.

“Nice voice.” Eris cringed just at the reminder. Maybe she would cut those vocal chords and give them as a present to Apollo so that whenever he pissed her off, she would merely ask the chords to sing and make the god’s ears bleed. Just thinking about the idea had her giddy.

The man laughed. “Tell me about it. Having to hear that every morning while dreaming about lovely maidens isn’t something that gives you a real good mood for the rest of the day.”

Hmm...maybe she should simply deliver the girl as a wife for Ares instead. That God always had a foul mood. Maybe it would have an opposite effect on him.

Otrera shrieked once more and she axed that idea in seconds.

“Come on Iamus, your making Otrera mad. And you know how she gets when that happens.”

Eris half laughed, half moaned at the thought. “She gets louder?”

Stopping in a half run around to cut off Iamus, Callistor stood up and anchored his hands on his hips. “Actually, she starts to sing to cool down. I actually prefer the yelling compared to the singing. Iamus would you please stop running around her, I’m sure she doesn’t have all day playing games with you.”

Now that he mentioned it, she noted the sun was easing down a little behind the horizon. Mortal time sure was different compared to Mt. Olympus.

“Iamus Come on ” Callistor went to dive for the boy but fell short and accidentally knocked right into her, sending them both down. Before she could hit the hard ground though, he twisted himself so that she landed on top of him instead. Air temporarily was knocked straight from her lungs as her head banged into his chest while his hit the ground with a loud thwack.

“Cali cali ” Iamus cried as tears started to cloud his eyes at the sight of his brother hurt. He touched his shoulder and shook him. When he didn’t immediately react to the boy’s actions, he started to sob. Eris sat up slowly, her head giving a dull throb. She blinked once, twice before she finally could get the spinning in her mind to halt. Below her, Callistor moaned in painful agony that had her heart faltering. Iamus meanwhile started to tug at her sleeve of her robe and pointing at his brother. He wanted her to help him?

She leaned forward and brushed a few strands back from his forehead. No blood. “Are you alright?”

He cracked one blue eye open and looked up to her. “Define alright.”

Eris let out a laugh as she smiled down at him. “That you’ll survive without having me carry you back to your home.”

Callistor rubbed at his temple then slowly started to sit up. He hissed when he felt a throb just at the back of his head start up with a vengeance. “I’ll manage.”

Carefully, she pulled his hand away from his head and checked it for any fatal wound. Only a large bump and a scrap along his forearm seemed to cause him issue. Smiling, she sat back. “Thank you for not letting me get hurt.”

Callistor smiled. “Thank you for not getting hurt. At least now I know my wounds were worth it.”

She laughed then did something so unexpectedly for the both of them as she kissed his forehead. “It was worth it.”

Suddenly, both of them were red in the cheeks.

Iamus ransacked them with his arms as he cried into Callistor’s chest. “Iam Iam, sorr.”

“I think he’s happy you’re okay too.” Eris ruffled the little boy’s hair before getting up and helping the brothers up.

Cal rustled the kid’s hair as well. “I’m sure. He’s a good kid. Just a little bit of a mischief maker.”

Eris gave a smirk at the title. “Nothing wrong with that now is there?”

“Not at all. Without mischief, life would be utterly boring.”

And just like that, Eris felt her heart falter again. What was it about these pair of mortals that were so different from the rest?

Callistor motioned with his head to the left, just where Otrera’s yells had been coming from.“Would you like to come and eat with us? It’s the least I could do for knocking you over.”

Biting her bottom lip, she tried hard to ignore the urge to go with him. So easily she wanted to join them and without hesitation. That, was what scared her the most.

“Beautiful come ” Iamus called, already reaching for her arm to tug at. She gave an unusual shy smile and nearly wished to die right then and there. Never had she been shy Never had she felt embarrassment. She was a goddess damn it

Callistor lowered his blue eyes down to her eye level and gave the most pleading, handsome looks she’d ever seen on a man that temporarily forgot she needed to breathe.

It seemed she was becoming attached to these to and she’d only known them for not even a single hour.

Fine. It wouldn’t be that big of a deal. It was only a few seconds to her compared to the life a mortal in any case. With a quick nod, she felt a rough, calloused hand grab hold of hers and tug. “Great. Just stay close to me, these fields can get confusing and I don’t want to lose you in there.”

She tsked. “But where would the fun be in that?” The sound of Iamus stomach growling however had them all laughing. “Okay, maybe later.”

Callistor threw her an impish look that had her heart fluttering and her stomach doing somersaults. “Definitely later. If you don’t mind ‘Beautiful’.”

She mirrored his look with one of her own that usually had gods worry. “Not at all.”
