Torchwood: Gwen [CoE]

"I wish it were me. Then you could shoot me and I could sleep." "I'd like that very much, sir."

I had fully intended to make this post last Saturday, but I was visiting my parents last weekend for the long weekend, and I didn't really absorb the episode as much as I do when I watch them by myself and am able to flail and be ridiculous, and pause it if necessary, and yell things at the screen (almost always necessary).  I've been busy since I got back, doing overtime at work (yay, extra money), so I didn't get a chance to re-watch until tonight.

At any rate, my thoughts, let me show you them:

"They're keeping it quiet in case there's an outbreak of spontaneous joy. We can't have that."

It remains to be seen whether or not this will actually post, since LJ is being a dick yet again.  But I wanted to get my thoughts about this week's episode out before I watch tonight's Doctor Who (OMGYAY!!!).

Ooh, and now the rain's really coming down!  Anyone else who is/was in the path of Hurricane Irene, stay safe and as dry as possible!
Torchwood: Gwen is adorable!

"Haven't you noticed the absence of killing?"

So this has been the busiest week ever.  Monday through Wednesday was eight hours of work each day, come home, then solid non-work-related work until bed, with only a break for dinner.  Yesterday, I attempted to catch up on the many tabs I have open (still so many, OMG), and will probably be doing that tomorrow as well.

And since this is the only thing I seem to post about lately (what, I'm behind on pretty much every other show I watch in the summer!), I wanted to talk about last week's Torchwood for a second.  I'd planned to make this post last weekend, but since I'm not used to this new sleep schedule yet, I ended up mostly sleeping the weekend away. :\  Hopefully that won't happen this weekend, since I have all of the things to do.

But anyway, a few thoughts on last week's episode, before tonight's airs:

Whew, made it with seconds to spare!
Torchwood: Gwen [CoE]

"It's a pot of glue that still thinks it's a racehorse."

I watched the Torchwood Comic Con panel earlier (Starz was kind enough to upload it to youtube).  There are some super vague spoilers (pretty much boiling down to "we're going to focus on this character/this relationship in episode X"), but I'm generally a spoilerphobe and they didn't bother me.  Mostly it's just the cast being super precious with one another.  I think the new cast members fit in well with the John and Eve dynamic, and I pretty much just want to draw hearts around all of them.  Basically, Eve Myles, marry me!

The audience Q&A portion wasn't even that motts-y, maybe because you can't see the people asking the questions, IDK.  It definitely helped that the moderator was the one to ask the inevitable Ianto question (ugh).  The fan questions mostly just led to some charming and hilarious stories, so I consider it a win.  If you want to watch it, and don't want to deal with watching something on youtube for an hour, I uploaded it here (or if you want the HD version, that's here).

But anyway, this week's episode!  My thoughts after finally getting to re-watch:

Meta: Children of Earth Rewatch (1/2)

My promised post about Torchwood series three, Children of Earth! There is a lot of stuff that I wanted to talk about here, so I decided to break it down a bit so that it's more manageable. First, I'm going to talk about it as a whole, and then I'm going to focus on each episode a little bit. Then, a few criticisms of the series. And since I wrote a lot of papers in college, I'll probably have a conclusion of some sort at the end. I don't know how to end something this long without one, lol.

I was planning on adding a section to this about RTD and his, frankly, inexcusable behavior and treatment of fans post Children of Earth, but this is already so long, so I think I'll save that for later. A few weeks ago, I bought a copy of his book, "The Writer's Tale" (I just want to know everything about Doctor Who, okay?! I can't help it! Besides, I had a 50% off coupon for Borders that made it super cheap, so I don't feel as bad giving him money as I normally would), which is basically a ridiculously long series of emails he exchanged with Ben Cook, a journalist who has (among other things) written for Doctor Who magazine. It started out intending to be an article for said magazine about series four of Doctor Who, but since Russell writes emails that are even longer than mine, it ended up being a ridiculous doorstop of a book. I was shocked at how long it is when I got it. And the print is teeny tiny. So far, it is pretty amazing. I find Russell much more palatable here, maybe because he's just corresponding with a friend, I don't know. But it's really good so far (I had to pace myself so I didn't read it all as soon as I got it, to give you an idea), and I will probably post about it once I've finished. I've heard he talks extensively in later chapters about CoE, so it will be interesting to see what he has to say in light of the interviews he gave after it came out.

So anyway, on to the CoE talk!  And of course this ended up being so long that I had to split it into two parts, oh god.  So, this post is the whole series and Days 1-3.  Part Two (linked at the bottom) is Days 4-5 and my criticisms.  And I've read this over in bits about five thousand times, but if there are any ridiculous factual errors or things that don't make sense, let me know!

And now we go day by day! This skips over a lot of stuff, since most of it was written almost immediately after I finished each episode, and there were just things that didn't jump out at me as needing to be talked about right then. Needless to say, most of this is not in the order it aired in the episode, just in the order I thought of it/the order it made most sense.
