Writer's Block: Department of Stereotypes
For me, asking for directions is a last resort. I'd rather prepare for a journey, trip, etc beforehand, so that I don't end up lost. E.g. last week I had to go to a doctor's surgery in Penryn, Cornwall, which I was registered with, but had never been to. I had a map of the town with me LOL which to some of my friends was hilarious because I'd lived in the place for 8 months. But the point is, I prepared beforehand so that I wouldn't have to ask (in the end I was forced to because I got lost).
Similarly, I have a friend, also female, who hates asking for directions; she would much prefer that we get lost trying to find our own way, than ask for a stranger's directions. In the end, my hatred of being lost leads to me asking for the both of us.
So it is really just a generalisation that was probably true at some point, but isn't completely true anymore...we can't always be exact, after all there are billions of males and females out there, we can't exactly ask them how they'd react if they got lost. So to make up for the lack of information, stereotypes/generalisations like these are created.
