All k9 dogs are abused hands down if you post any pro k9 stuff on my dash you’re unfollowed I don’t care if we’ve been mutuals for years, you can claim to be anti-cop or a leftist or whatever but if you post k9 dogs with like “a good doggo! A good boy!” fuck off, if I lose followers over this then good riddance

image

It’s ALSO worth saying that police dogs serve a significant role in worsening police brutality. A dog trained to attack a human will maim them. A cop looses a police dog on someone, and that person is expected to peacefully cooperate while a dog is trying to tear their limbs off. It is very easy for those massive wounds to get infected. It is an absurd amount of violence. And beyond the initial attack, the fact that a “poor sweet innocent doggo” did this is used to excuse that brutality in court. Especially if the victim, panicking in the moment, lashed out at the dog. As this website has demonstrated many times, majority-white juries have more sympathies for injured dogs than the people of color who are most often victims of police brutality. So they’re not just systemic animal abuse, they’re also a tool for increased police brutality and to excuse

hope you dont mind if i add some relevant links. the Marshall project in particular has a lot of other articles about k9s that i recommend clicking through.

i think a lot of (white) people just really don’t realize how fucking terrifying and dangerous these animals are and while i understand the animal welfare angle, i think any discussion about police dogs should be focused first and foremost on their role as living weapons

yes, there are some aninal welfare concerns but even if the dogs were treated like royalty they would still need to be abolished

Time to share that one JSTOR article again:

God I hate how normalized not being in control of your own devices has become.
My phone updates in the middle of the night without asking me shit or getting my consent for anything and its like

“Oh hi I’m your new AI, please enjoy this forced overlay that you can’t exit out of until you go through my tutorial”

“Great fuck you, I would like to uninstall you”

“Oh I’m sorry you can’t uninstall me! I’m a core system application and if you uninstall me your phone won’t function correctly despite the fact that I did not exist yesterday and your phone worked fine”

“…..”

“You can disable parts of my functionality but I will always be here and I will pop up notifications asking you to re-enable me unless you figure out how to disable those too! Then I will still show up in a different color at the top of your settings application telling you that you need to ‘fix” a 'problem’ with your phone, that problem being that I am disabled. Does that help?“

Like, you know what I can do on my desktop? "sudo pacman -Rdd linux” , this will just fucking remove the entire linux kernel. Fundamentally breaking my computer until I boot up a live disk and chroot in and reinstall it or whatever, and the computer will go “Are you sure (y/n)” or whatever and i’m like “y” and it will just go “Ok you got it boss”

But its mine, I get to do what I want with it. I control the computer, the computer does not control me. I refuse to cede control to my phone or anything else. The thing is a lot of people will joke that like “Oh I love just letting the machine tell me what to do, I don’t know what I’m doing, it knows best” or whatever but the thing you have to realize is that when you say that you are abstracting away that “the phone” or whatever is not some value neutral logic driven robot like from sci-fi, it is a collection of the the capitalistic and fascistic desires of the tech oligarch fuckwits that are burning the world to the ground right now. You aren’t submitting to the phone, you are submitting to Musk, Bezos, Nadella, Pichai, Cook and all those other evil bastards.

Fuck them, fuck their little AI toys, and fuck this.

tbh fuck anyone who says a single bad thing about libraries

Not content I normally reblog but libraries are super important and our world would be diminished without them.

The library was how I was able to read so many books as a kid that my parents wouldn’t have been able to afford.

Libraries are one of the only places on Earth that treats people the same no matter how much money you have. We can’t lose that.

In complete honesty, my belief in copyright and piracy is that studios need to make media available 24/7 or else they lose rights to it.

You want to stop making DVDs? Cool put it on a streaming service. Want to take it off streaming services? Cool start making DVDs. You don’t want to do either? Cool you can’t take people to court for burning it onto CDs or sharing it. That’s just keeping the media alive.

And none of this “well you can go on eBay and get it for $80” nope. You need to be actively distributing it.

I absolutely agree with this. Use it or lose it, can’t horde it.

My only caveat and I really don’t know how you’d set it or enforce it, would also be to qualify it as “affordably available.” So that in the case of, say, a movie, a $100 steel book ultra deluxe 4k hd version as your sole means of offering it doesn’t count. You’d also need something like a $19.99 basic ass dvd in circulation.

And, irrigation canals.

Saves 82% of water evaporation. 💧

Don’t cover fields indiscriminately. Some crops need as much sun as they can get, but anyone who has planted a kitchen garden knows that some vegetables and herbs do a lot better with partial shade.

okay so here’s the thing. those solar panels are largely going up where the was once fields of corn.

In the US we grow FAR MORE CORN THAN WE CAN CONSUME OR EXPORT. More than what people and livestock will eat. We grow so much corn that we keep having to invent new ways to use that corn. We have a minimum requirement for ethonal mixed into our gasoline in spite of it burning less efficiently because we have so much corn that we need to fucking burn it.

We grow this much corn because at some point the US decided the best thing to do to save farms if they grew a crop but the market for that crop ended up fucking sucking at the end of the season was to pay those farms subsidies so they could make up the loss and just keep on keeping on.

And then investment firms went oh shit, an investment with a guaranteed government backed return? Yes please! And started snapping up farmland. So now huge swaths of US farms are corporate owned, investment firm backed entities that bear little to no actual relationship to food production needs of domestic or international populations in any way shape or form. They just keep on growing commodity crops because it’s an easy return.

Agrovoltaics is actually a fascinating area of tech that could potentially revolutionize farming. I have considered it myself! I raise mostly sheep. sheep eat grass out of big grassy fields. Solar panels provide shade to those sheep without really impacting the grass. leave a wide enough space between rows to run a tractor and I can hay the fields too. Attach a catchment and storage system to the bottoms of those panels and now rain and snow run off in the wet season can be used to irrigate the fields in the dry season without impacting our already threatened aquifer.

Flashy memes like the ones above are propaganda slapped together by people with a motive or little to no understanding of farming, and often times both. A lot of anti agrovoltaic rhetoric perpetuates the myth started by an oil exec that solar panels are simply ALWAYS leaching horrible toxic chemicals at all times! My friends, they’re mostly metal and glass.

In conclusion: cover car parks, canals AND fields! just do it smartly!

ETA: some science dudes in the comments are also pointing out that many of those fields are being rewilded with native grasses and flowers, and we’re starting to see an increase in biodiversity! Win!

I can’t remember exactly what youtube video it was but someone estimated that if the US got rid of all the corn fields just used to make ethanol for fuel and replaced them with solar installations, it would make more electricity than the whole country currently uses by a lot. Can’t speak to their work but it’s interesting to think about.

Might have been Technology Connections!

Another critical element of the US corn situation is chemical fertilizers.

Corn (maize) consumes massive amounts of nitrogen from the ground, and can deplete the soil it’s grown in extremely quickly. The indigenous peoples who domesticated it in the first place dealt with this by just… not growing it in a monoculture. They’ve traditionally planted maize alongside beans, which convert nitrogen from the atmosphere to a form other plants can use, which along with squash vines to shade the ground creates a very stable micro-ecosystem of stuff you can eat. But that sounds like some HIPPY BULLSHIT, you know what’ll put that nitrogen back in the ground WAY faster than growing beans? Injecting a bunch of refined ammonia and nitrate compounds! And a fun fact about ammonia and nitrate compounds is that the they’re basis of most common explosives, so the US had a lot of industrial production lines to produce bombs during World War II, and when the demand dropped afterward they weren’t going to, like, throw the machines out, so they just started making nitrogen fertilizer instead. Wow, you can grow absolutely absurd amounts of corn for super cheap forever!

Except. Industrial ammonia manufacturing is not, like… a low-energy process. The method that made it affordable to do at scale involves pumping natural gas and nitrogen into a reactor at 200 atmospheres of pressure and 500 fucking degrees Celsius. When I checked Wikipedia for those numbers just now, it had a string of citations from the 2000s saying that ammonia production alone was responsible for 3-5% of all natural gas use worldwide and 1-2% of the energy supply. All of which means that large-scale monoculture corn farming as practiced in the US is shockingly dependent on the fossil fuel industry, and even more so the less sustainable the overall energy infrastructure is.

So, like, I haven’t done the math, but fewer corn fields might not be the worst thing you could do for the atmosphere all by itself.

let this be the year that you stop using your school (or employer) email address for your AO3 account

  • when you leave school or leave a job, you lose that email address. This means not only that you’ll lose any emails you have saved on that address but that you might lose your ability to access AO3. When you try to reset your password or recover your account, messages are sent to the email address on file.
  • your school or employer might block emails based on words contained in those emails. that means you might miss subscription notifications, comment notifications, or emails from the Policy & Abuse team trying to contact you. These messages won’t go to spam. They’ll just be outright blocked. You will never see them.
  • your school/work systems administrator has the ability to access and read your emails (not that they necessarily would, but they have that power)
  • if you’re still in high school, it’s possible that the school’s Acceptable Use Policy (similar to a Terms of Service) would allow your parents or legal guardian to access your emails, upon request
  • school and work email addresses often use some form of your real, legal name which you may or may not want connected to your fannish identity.

As you can see, creating a free email account with a different provider is probably a good idea for a lot of reasons unrelated to AO3, too. It might seem annoying, but it’s worth it.

If you need instructions for how to change your account’s email address, here you go!

because of the new tv show. and it’s only going to get worse as we get closer to the show’s release. take notice of it — who’s advertising, who’s talking about it, who’s encouraging you to watch it. it’s going to keep happening. there’s going to be more chocolate guys, more nicholas hoults, more kiera knightleys.

take no shit. give rowling an inch and she’ll take a mile. i don’t care how much you like or don’t like someone — if you see them interacting with harry potter positively in ANY way, drop them. unfollow, block, pretend they don’t exist. scorched fucking earth.

and most importantly, be loud about your support for transfems. be transfeminists. be mean about it. fight with people about it. block liberally. download shinigami eyes. read transfeminist theory. provide material and monetary support for dolls who need it, especially the trans women of color in your communities. show them that they’re loved. don’t look away.

ao3org:

Our Commitment to Maximum Inclusivity

AO3 was founded partly in response to a growing trend of fanworks being removed from websites that had previously allowed them. This pattern has been observed numerous times throughout fandom history.

Whenever there are fears about censorship on other sites, AO3 sees an increase in the waitlist for our automatic invitation queue. Regardless of their reasons for joining, we welcome any new user to our site who agrees to abide by our Terms of Service. We will not vet new users for “legitimacy”, because AO3 is for everyone.

The OTW has no plans to change the content we allow on AO3, and we stand by our commitment to maximum inclusiveness of fanwork content. We will not remove works unless they violate the AO3 Terms of Service, and we don’t make decisions based on how many times something is reported. Users do not need to worry that anyone’s works will be taken down due to a baseless report or a mass-reporting campaign, if one were to occur.

Regarding the unverified rumors that reports to the Policy & Abuse committee have greatly increased in the past few days, changes in ticket volume can be due to many different factors (including simple coincidence). If you’re interested in learning more about how many and what kinds of reports the Policy & Abuse committee receives, we publish information about the previous month’s tickets in our monthly newsletters as well as an annual breakdown of ticket types on the OTW website.
