This Week's Podcast: Predicaments VCR Game

I thought I'd start posting links to new Game Night Guys episodes when they go live over here on Livejournal. Why not?

This week, Brian and I played an old school VCR game called "Predicaments VCR Game" starring Joan Rivers and that one dude from "WKRP in Cincinnati" and those Maytag commercials. Just click on the picture below to stream from the website or subscribe to Game Night Guys on iTunes!

Writer's Block: News Development

What's the first major news event that you remember hearing about as a child? Where did you learn about it? How did it impact your world view?

I was less than a month away from turning 6 and my family decided one Saturday to take a drive to a nice scenic place with my mom's cousin and her husband. At the time, he was a logger working in an area that wasn't open to the public for some reason and he knew of a really good spot where there wouldn't be any people. I remember my whole family spending the whole day there. It was a nice sunny spring day and it was kind of a long drive home. Other than that, I don't remember much else. What sticks out most is that the next morning, Sunday May 18th, 1980, my mom woke me up. I remember asking why she was waking me up when it was still dark outside and she told me it was because the mountain had erupted. The area my entire family had spent time in the previous day was one of the "red zones" near Mt. St. Helens and we had missed the eruption by just a few hours. Thanks for endangering my life, family! I think I'm bitter about the whole thing because I couldn't leave the house for over a week and my Kindergarten graduation was cancelled and I never had one.

Me and my brother and probably my cousin standing in the back of my dad's truck watching one of the smaller bits of activity from the mountain a couple months before the big eruption. I'm the one wearing gigantic binoculars because I'm awesome.

The other big event I remember is coming home from school one day about a year later. I was 6 and in the first grade. My mom was in the house watching tv and I said hi to her. I remember her watching the tv with a very focused look on her face and I asked her what was going on. She said the President had been shot. I remember the news talking about it all the rest of that day. I'm not really sure I understood what was going on but I remember it being bad. Probably because he didn't die, it didn't seem so major to me at the time. I was 6, I was probably off reading a book or listening to records in my room or something.

First World Problems

They happen to us all the time. Every day. Your latte is 160 degrees instead of 180 degrees. Gas has gone up another 3 cents a gallon. You can't decide which pair of shoes to wear to your post-work cocktail gathering. The DVR cut off the end of Dancing With The Stars AGAIN. Rather than just set aside one post on one day to chronicle the struggles of living in these United States, I've dedicated this community to making others aware of the problems that exist EVERY day.

Feel free to join and post often. Together, we can become united in the fight to end our first world problems. Or at least have a place to vent about them.

firstworldprobs needs you.

Also, there are no restrictions on joining. Invite anyone you feel would benefit from the great service I am enacting here.

You're welcome.

Confession Thursday

I confess. I didn't wear a green shirt today. It would help if I owned more than one green shirt. So, now's your chance to get something off your chest. I give to you another episode of Confession Thursday.
