unpopular opinion but i like it when tv shows have women in them

what annoys the shit out of me about this post is how many times i've had to read "and i like it when they're actually well-written" because i've never had to read about a male character being badly written. ever. even when they're inconsistent or made up of one-liners or only there to be shipped with another male character. but yeah sure your critical skills suddenly flare up when it comes to women tumblr user. sure

There are generally fewer female characters in media, so when one is badly written it's a big deal. The male character who is nothing but quips and one-liners is probably surrounded by other male characters who are better written. (Or, the writing style specifically calls for a character like this; James Bond-esque characters aren't written poorly if they are wooden and live for their jobs and the chance to throw out a witty quip while looking cool but otherwise seem to have no interior life, because the genre has established that that's what kind of main character this genre uses.)

In Star Trek TNG, after the first season, we had between 5-6 main male characters depending on whether you considered Wesley a main, and 2 female characters. So when the counselor with the ability to sense emotions is constantly crippled by her abilities rather than being able to use them to do cool shit, or the doctor is mostly shown in her role as mother to one male character or love interest of another and not as a doctor, this matters more than Riker being kind of one-dimensional most of the time, because there are 4-5 other main male characters being interesting all around him.

I grew up on X-Men written by Chris Claremont, where almost all the female characters were written to be more interesting than almost all the male characters, so I have pretty high standards. I do in fact notice when the female characters in a show are generally wooden and one-dimensional and the main male character is not, although his friends might be. But I have to say -- if you're watching American or British streaming SF/fantasy, nowadays there are a lot of interesting female characters, and you'd still never know it from reading the fanfic. The fanfic always prioritizes the male characters no matter how good the female ones are, in an ensemble cast. I don't know about stories where the main character is female because frankly there are so damn few of those anymore. (I was in my prime in the era of Buffy and Xena.) Lots of ensemble casts with great female characters nowadays, tho.

I do agree, I like shows that have badly written women better than shows with no women. Even if the women irritate me by being badly written, that's better than the entire environment of the show irritating me by having no women. (Didn't watch Red Dwarf for years because I couldn't be bothered to watch a show that didn't think casting a character of my gender as a regular was important.)

Looking at modern TV shows, the gender balance is actually a lot more equal than you might think.

Looking at the drama shows currently airing on CBS, pulling from the list of main characters, we see:

  • NCIS: 9 male main characters, 9 female main characters (current season seems to have 5 male main characters and 2 female main characters, with an additional female former main character in a guest role)
  • FBI: 3 male main characters, 7 female main characters (current seasons has 3 male main characters and 3 female main characters)
  • Fire Country: 4 male main characters, 3 female main characters (current season seems to have 3 male main characters and 2 female main characters, with an additional female former main character in a guest role)
  • Tracker: 2 male main characters, 3 female main characters (current season seems to have 1 male main character and 1 female main character)
  • Elsbeth: 1 male main character, 2 female main characters (current season has 1 male main character and 1 female main character with the other female former main character as a guest role)

(etc.)

If we want to talk about The Main Character being female, both FBI and Elsbeth have the primary character as a female character.

If you want sci fi or fantasy shows with female main characters that came out sometime after Xena, Buffy, or Star Trek: The Next Generation (the latter of which aired from 1987-1994 and may not be particularly reflective of modern television), options include:

  • DC shows such as: Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman
  • Marvel shows such as: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Jessica Jones, Runaways, Cloak and Dagger, WandaVision, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Echo, Agatha All Along, Ironheart
  • Star Trek: Discovery
  • Invasion
  • Silo
  • Pluribus
  • First Kill
  • Fate: The Winx Saga
  • The Vampire Diaries / Legacies
  • Orphan Black
  • Lost Girl
  • Fringe

My point here is that 1) if you aren't finding TV shows with main female characters and are only finding ensemble casts with male main characters and female side characters then you probably need to look in other places, and 2) I think the idea that we must judge how well female characters are written more harshly than we judge how male characters are written because there are just so many more male characters isn't necessarily reflective of the modern media landscape.

We can and should absolutely judge how female characters are written, but to OP's point, people tend to only judge how female characters are written, often fairly harshly, while cheering for male characters no matter how poorly they are written.

I don't usually post fundraising type stuff here, but Little Miss Flint, who does a lot of community fundraising work in Flint, Michigan, runs an annual school supply drive to get kids in her community outfitted with everything they need for back-to-school, from clothes to school supplies and everything.

Her storage unit was just robbed and vandalized, and they lost almost everything, right before the back-to-school rush. So they're starting from scratch, with less than two weeks to go.

Flint is one of the poorest cities in the US and a lot of these kids depend on the clothes and supplies they receive through programs like these.

I know money is super tight all around right now, but if anyone has a few extra bucks they wanna kick in, Little Miss Flint's GoFundMe is here.

I do always find it so sillyyyyy when people are like "oooh well fandoms™ just aren't as interested in women characters because women aren't written very well so they're not fun, unlike men characters" as if a huge portion of Fandom Participants™ aren't also just inventing new personalities for their dude faves so that they can fit into the Grumpy/Sunshine Top/Bottom Masc/Woman Lite molds. like you barely give a shit about actual characterization then but suddenly when it's women only their canon official writing counts and it's not sufficient... okay villain. I see you

It would be so much easier if people could just say "I am focusing on these two male characters and disregarding the rest of the cast because I like imagining them bumping uglies" and instead they have to get on these moral purity soap boxes and make up bull shit reasons, when the answer, the REAL answer is they see two guys next to each other and say "what if they kissed?".

People -and therefore characters- can have self-esteem issues while also being convinced they are the GOAT, and I think not aknowledging that often gets in the way of character analysis.

"pretending to be confident, but deep-down actually insecure" is definitely a character type that exists, but "genuinely confident but there are a few things she doesn’t trust herself with," or "genuinely hyperconfident in her abilities but entirely unsure of her worth beyond that," or "genuinely hyperconfident in herself but if you push these 3 mental pressure points in a specific pattern she will be a sobbing mess on the floor" are characters who exists as well. And they're all beautiful.

i think we should all start using arabic words and phrases more often because its a beautiful language and also theres not really. english equivalents that have the same vibes

theres also the comedy potential of it. you guys dont know the joy of having your muslim friend text you "hopefully the racists in our city will all get sick and cant go to the protest" and you, as a pasty white guy, responding with "inshallah they get covid"

its a one hit KO every time. its fucking hilarious. theres no english word that has the same effect.

he also once texted me that he got over a mysterious illness he came down with (i think? i cant remember the exact context) and i responded with "subhanallah he is cured"

again, one hit KO. he lost his shit.

what im saying is we gotta normalise arabic. its just a language like any other, and it has some great words. its just like saying "thank god" or whatever, but theres so much variety and nuance. its beautiful

what do inshallah and subhanallah mean so I could potentially use em in the correct situations? And potential words I could use?

OK LETS DO THIS

disclaimer i am not arab or muslim and i dont speak arabic but @frogofalltime has explained these words to me and says im using them correctly lmao

inshallah - "if god wills it". like an "i hope this happens" kind of thing. remember the finding nemo poster "inshallah they find him" meme if that helps. used in future tense.

mashallah - "god has willed it", used when something good happened. can be used to denote awe about an event or person. used in past tense.

alhamdulillah - essentially "thank god" or "praise be to god". like mashallah and inshallah but stronger, and can be used in any tense (i think). he will be baked soon alhamdullilah

subhanallah - "glory be to god". like alhamdullilah but stronger. used for when something almost miraculous happens!

those are all the ones i remember off the top of my head im sure binya can add more (and also confirm whether ive got my translations right)

mashaallah robin my faithful student you translated and explained all of this so well :0

there's also astaghfirullah which means "i seek forgiveness in god" which you use when you or someone else does something haram (forbidden / sinful / wrong). tbh we use it in a lot of jokey contexts like if someone swears in a conversation you can call them out like "astaghfirullah haram !"

and bismillah which means "in the name of god" which you can use before doing something, we often use it before doing a difficult thing like when you are struggling to open a bottle or something lmao. or you can say it when someone falls or drops something or gets injured. idk

appalachians need this they will be unstoppable

There’s definitely something to doing a mix-and-match with semantically-similar rural-American colloquialisms. I think “Inshallah and the creek don’t rise” has a nice ring to it.

Lord that rolls off the tongue so good 😭

According to Know Your Meme, on August 18th, 2005, Erwin Beekveld brought forth this work into the world. HAPPY TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY, THEY’RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGARD.

sheds a single tear

every august 18th my notifications break and i go, fuck, tumblr has failed me once again, but it hasn’t. it hasn’t failed me. it’s just the taking the hobbits to isengard-iversary. happy 12 years

Lil Early, but fuck it! I’m not missing it this year.

A reminder that sell-buy dates or best-used-by dates are not the same as expiration dates.

I love that a food bank is providing this info as they are experts in stretching food budgets and knowledgable in shelf-stable food items

So I followed the link to the website and found the longer list.

The website puts a link to the USDA site which links to foodsafety dot gov who really wants you to use the app, but you can bypass it.

Also a link to the Canadian government's advisory on best-before dates.

Both sites have links to pages that get more into food storage.

As it is food drive season I'd like to remind people that while food might be edible past these dates, food banks and food pantries will not use food past those dates, so please don't waste their time by donating things they will not use

the leftism leaving people’s bodies when you tell them making fun of someone’s appearance is always objectively scummy even if the person they’re making fun of is bad

“lol are we really surprised that the dude who said eating puppies is good and morally correct looks like THIS” and then it’s just a picture of a completely normal looking person who is fat or has acne or just in general doesn’t meet the societally imposed standard of conventional “hotness,” which is bizarrely being posited as an indicator of morality
