Challenge #4

In your own space, make a list of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, and/or that you'd like someone to create or do for you.

1. I'd like to read a full-length Harry Potter fanfic where Harry gets sorted into Slytherin. The events are partially same as in the books, partially different, but the focus is on Slytherin House, and without the prejudice that they are all evil, but the story is darker and edgier than the original one. The more horror/mystery the better. Violence and gore is fine, but no romance, please! or at least, no more romance than in the original books. In the end, Harry might become the next Dark Lord, or maybe he gets really close but manages to avoid the temptation and to choose the Light Side. Not sure which ending is better.

Maybe something in the same vein like Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, but more Slytherin and less rambling. (I loved the author's take on Voldemort, btw.)

(Maybe there are such fics, but the HP fanfic world is too overwhelming to find anything without reliable recs...)

2. I'd like fanfics about Arlo, my favourite Team Rocket Leader from Pokémon GO. Not about his relationship with Candela, and preferably without a romantic angle; surely it can be about his research into the Shadow Pokémon, about his career in Team Rocket, about his past (we hardly know anything at all), the character study and such...

3. Not fandom-specific: I'd like a motivation/accountability community where people share their goals and report on their progress, and support/nudge/push each other to stay on track, and there are regular challenges. There are such communities for writers, and I suppose for fitness, but I want it to be general-purpose, allowing all kinds of goals, e.g. studying (any subjects), reading, programming, fitness, art, avoiding bad habits... Also, it mustn't be aggressively moderated like Habitica forums (it should be 18+), and it mustn't be on Facebook.

(I saw something similar on DW but it's long dead. Maybe there are such communities on Pillowfort? I'm not a member, recently tried to browse around, but it seems to be a ghost town.)

It'd be really cool to have an accountability community like that. It feels like DW would work for it, but modding might need a team of people.

Technically, DW would work, it's much more suitable than FB or Habitica. I agree it would need a team of mods. Not to nitpick and ban users for the usage of word "fuck", but to create challenges, post useful tips, make sure that every user's post gets replies, nudge inactive users (to some extent), and generally keep the spirit up. I'm not sure how challenges would even work, if everyone is doing different things, but Snowflake Challenge is one step in this direction :)

I used to really like

wrisomifu, which was a writing challenge, but had different themes on different days of the week, to give you some variety for things to respond to. I think if this comm had just one mod, they'd burn out really, really fast. Though maybe it could be like the perambulating Write Every Day challenge, where different months had different teams of mods.

Hi again! Following the challenge to revive a dormant community, I just found

do_it and posted there. It could be just the thing I wanted, if it will become active! Let's try to do it together :)

A motivation/accountability comm would be fantastic, but a lot of work. Probably why there isn't one. :(

If only I had people's skills, self-confidence and energy/focus to organize it... But as it stands, that's exactly why I need a motivation community, so someone could force me to do stuff ... ;)

I’m a one man army when it comes to your progress, or at least I try to be. A flawed army of one. I don’t really like most people but when I do give a rat’s ass I try my best. I’ll keep on doing my sometimes snarky best.

You're a lone wolf and I'm a cat that walks by itself ;) Social interaction is a scientifically proven way to boost motivation, but maybe I'm too picky about it... I don't like fluff and obsessive safety, but I'm not a fan of flamewars and bullying either. There has to be a balance (in the Force :) Maybe such community would only work with a close-knit group of friends.

That community is a great idea! But yeah, as others have said, probably a lot of work. Or it could have community members volunteer to make the daily (I'm presuming, maybe weekly) posts so the 'work' would be spread out.

Without a proper organization, it will soon be only one or two people posting, and all the rest just scrolling by. (Seeing how most of the online communities end up.) I'm very impressed with the Snowflake Challenge, which works very well, but a community active all year round and with more general goals would require much more work, I suppose...

I feel like my wish to get more involved on Discord and your wish for an accountability community could be a good mesh. I'm going to think on this...

Possibly there are good motivation communities on Discord... I didn't actually try searching, because it's harder to lurk anonymously, and I don't have enough self-confidence ;) besides, I find Discord a little too complicated (judging by our Pokemon Go community, which is the only Discord community I'm a member of).

A motivation community would be awesome. I like places where you can list goals - and then cross them off when you do them! Hehe.

Indeed, crossing off goals from a list is immensely satisfying, and it would be even more satisfying if you could brag about it to fellow members, and to be constantly encouraged to work harder...

Perhaps for your first wish, you could try out Leo Inter Serpentes by Aeternum? It sticks reasonably close to the books, but Harry's best friend is Draco, rather than Ron. There is a romance in later installments, though. It's complete through Year Six and the author is currently working on Year 7, putting out a chapter a month.
