tumblrina[1] culture emphasized a markedly religious view of the "Library"[2], envisioning it as a place that could provide any possible worldly need, such as food[3], every social service[4, 5, 6], and 3d printers[7]. Its bishops, known as "Librarians"[8], were believed to contain infinite patience, wisdom, and knowledge[9]. Adherents were hostile towards the suggestion that not all "Libraries" necessarily provided these things, if such a concept was ever brought to their attention.[10]

The primary association with a Library, in tumblrina culture as well as in society at large, was books and the written word[11]. This is ironic considering, despite frequent verbosity[12], proclaimed superior reading comprehension[13], and often a love of reading and writing[14], many tumblrinas were unable to utilize these abilities in conversation with each other, and in fact, cultivated a very hostile culture[15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20].

i read an anecdote ages and ages ago from a gay person who grew up with gay parents, and struggled to find any kind of belonging in the gay community because everyone else there was bonding over having homophobic parents. everyone else was defining themselves by their suffering and oppression rather than by their sexuality, leaving this gay person to feel like they weren't really gay because they didn't have the right experiences. they wondered whether more gay people would feel this way as more children grew up with gay parents, if the gay community would leave them behind for not having suffered enough. i think about that anecdote a lot.

a lot of the current rhetoric around gender reminds me of that anecdote. a lot of people are willing to go "transgender people are oppressed for their gender presentation, therefore if you're not oppressed for your gender presentation, you're not trans." but i don't think we should be defining ourselves by our suffering and oppression. what will we do, in a few years, in a few decades, as there start to be, say, adults who were supported in their transition as children? what will we do when a stereotypical trans person can genuinely say they didn't suffer hardship for being trans?

i'm afraid i know the answer. i'm afraid that people are going to close ranks as they've already started closing ranks against intersex people, against nonbinary people, against double binary people, against closeted people. as some people have started closing ranks against people who transitioned in the opposite direction from them. as many people have closed ranks against people with edge case gender experiences. "i don't consider you to be oppressed, therefore you are not welcome to share in this community you might otherwise belong in."

i wish people would understand that we shouldn't do this. i wish people would understand that we benefit from a broader, more inclusive community more than we benefit from whatever purity testing oppression olympics it is that i keep running into.

Actually, no, I don't think that friendships dropping like flies in your late 20s and early 30s because no one has time for that between overwork and family obligations and marriage and kids and partners and the ritual of the time slayer is normal and ok. No I don't think deep conversations and spontaneous adventures being replaced with a tired coffee every six months is a normal part of growing up. I don't think that emotional intimacy and soul bonds disintegrating in the face of practical inconvenience is a fact of life. I think that means something is deeply deeply wrong with our society and I will never forgive it for the friends I've lost

I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.

I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.

he had to jump in the ballpit to cool off after getting all airplane ears over a treat puzzle that proved a little too advanced

he's done this a few times now. the ball pit actively soothes him when he gets mad over puzzles. i could learn something from this

Whaddaya know, an extra hour in the ball pit really does help.

physicists: think they know enough to be an authority in other fields

chemists: don't think they know enough to be an authority in other fields

biologists: aren't even sure they know enough to be an authority in their own firld

mathematicians: don't understand why you seem to think they'd ever want to leave the beautiful and pure realm of numbers and have anything to do with any other field

“chocolate guy” is currently shilling for harry potter so i better not see yall post his shit anymore. anyone who engages with that shit especially for money is scorched earth as far as i’m concerned.

that catholic turtle keeps trying to baptize me in the church punch bowl but i'm so slippery and aerodynamic that wrinkled old fool couldn't catch me if his life depended on it

really like this comment that seems to imply that all musicians go to hell no matter what. which is true
