Given the copious amount of television I have consumed in the last 24 hours and the trainwreck of a week I just had, I feel it is only fitting that I post my first picspam in ages. Because, y'know, pretty people. Happy. Etc. Y/y? :D

I may have gone a LITTLE overboard with this. Just a little. )
I am in the process of moving e-mail addresses, which is not fun, especially when you make the mistake of migrating a lifetime's worth of e-mails over (yeah I've used my very first e-mail account all this while - I had different addresses, but they all led to the same inbox). However, it does unearth some brilliant gems like this comment on this article that I'd sent to myself:

Surveying the 70 postings, I'm afraid TPT Minister Lui NoPorn Tuck Yew would be taking LRT at least two times until the next 5 years is up.

S'poreans should appreciate the heart work that Ministers are doing. They have the heart not to make their subordinates to carry out the EXPERIENTIAL SURVEYing nor do they have ANYONE responsible enough under their command to carry out the task, and NONE of these lieutenants would break their boss's heart (Minister's, not YOUR's) by telling him BAD NEWS just in case they need to call 995 for heart-attack case ... ...

I apologize for my medically-infused posting.

It is important to deliver, no, I mean, to apologize.

We will deliver, definitely but pls kindly do NOT hold your breath ...

We will surely deliver, but sometimes with apologies ... ... and plenty of flood water,

Sometimes delivered with two chopped-off legs,
sometimes with a floating-Indon Boody,
sometimes with a little expensive HDB flat pricing,
sometimes a bit of frustrating ERP though traffic is extremely gentle,
sometimes a happy COE because sitting in a crawling car makes you happy that you got a HI-VALUE car in your possession FOR TEN GOOD YEARS to REPENT,
sometimes with a $4.3 million worth of porky pig President charcoaled abit all around,

sometimes we deliver a boy,
sometimes we deliver a girl,
sometimes we deliver you PAP Ministers, MPs, SnrCS Officers, GlassRoot Leeders, etc.

Oops! So sorry for the Delivery of The THIRD Kind, which any parents would cry, and even the Stork can't handle a mis-created product by nature due to wrong design criteria ... ...

I apologize,
Sincerely

It's filled with local references so I don't expect most of you to get it, but I'm highlighting it because... idk man it's so batshit crazy and stupid I love it. Yahoo! Singapore commenters just narrowly lose to YouTube commenters in the race to the bottom of the internet.

Also equally stupid but less funny things like this note from SingTel, about the drastically shortened Grey's S7 episodes:

We will also like to assure you that we have to adhere to Singapore Censorship Board’s guidelines. Any explicit scenes like unnatural sexual activities will be edited prior to the release of all season pass titles.

Seeing as to how Callie/Arizona rarely seem to get to participate in sexual activities of any sort, surely they must mean Kepner/Stark?

Edit: Oh I realise they didn't actually get it on. But well. It was unnatural nonetheless.

The brother and I finally got around to watching Grey's 7x20 on mioTV (local pay TV service) and we found out they managed to cut down a 43min episode down to 24min, inclusive of 2-3min of ads. In fact, the episode was so short they combined it with the one that came after to make up an hour-long ep. Seriously you guys, even if you have no idea what this ep was about/don't care about Grey's in general, you have got to admire the censorship board's work here! That's around a 50% cut! I hope the guys who worked on this got a raise.

(I would be considerably less amused had I not rented this ep from the US iTunes store the moment it came out. But I did!)
I hadn't planned to post tonight but then something wasp-like started buzzing around my room so I grabbed my laptop and phone and got the hell out of there. Now I have taken refuge in my living room and have nothing to do other than to scour the interwebz.

Let me update you on the mindless US-produced entertainment I have been consuming!

BOOKS!
  • JD Salinger's Franny and Zooey: I read this in a day (it's a short story) and there were a couple of "ooh, thinky!" moments but at the end of it I'm just like... whut? I'm not saying it's a bad book! I'm just not smart/well-read enough. Read this if you're into highbrow stuff?

  • David Sedaris' Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary: I adore David Sedaris and I adored this book! It's quite different from his other books and that almost made me put it down from the get-go (I'm not too big on Change) but I'm glad I didn't. In my mind it's sort of an Aesop's Fables for adults of this time, but if you hate Aesop, forget I ever said that. The stories are neatly packaged observations of society BUT they're not necessarily moralistic, and the book overall makes for quick, light reading. Read it! It's fun!

  • Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone: Lamb is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors ever. This book is not about a theme but rather a person, and Lamb is such a good storyteller there was once I checked both my laptop and the TV wondering what show I had to get back to before realising it was a book I had been reading that I'd somehow gotten convinced was playing out visually. COULDN'T RECOMMEND MORE.

TV!
  • Grey's 7x22: Like I said on Twitter, "Grey's just proved it's still capable of a clusterfuck not involving lesbian drama. Good on you! (...but yes I am crying inside rn oh god. ;__;)" Right after watching this ep all I wanted to do was cling to people, so I actually sent SMSes that said just "*cling*" and "*clingwrap*" out. Idk man. I used to recommend EVERYTHING GREY'S because I am a rabid fangirl, but I'd only ask you to watch this ep/season as a whole if you've been a fan from the start so you can forgive them some of the major fuckery that's been going on recently.

MOVIES!
  • Mojave Moon: Why did I watch this? Why do I own it on DVD?! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

  • Beyond Borders: I got this as a birthday present 3 years ago but never got around to watching it because I don't usually have the patience to sit through movies at home. (Yes, the common thread is that all the movies-on-DVD that I own feature Angelina Jolie, because all the other actresses I obsess over tend to be B-list TV actors.) It wasn't a very good movie but I liked it and I really appreciate AJ's efforts at spreading the word. Watch especially if you like AJ and her humanitarian work, but not if you're looking for generic entertainment.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Watched this today as part of my birthday celebration (though this really wasn't for me, per se). It was okay, I guess, but I think the PotC series needs to end already - was it even intended to be continued for this long?! Fair warning: the ending lines were REALLY LAME.I am unfairly prejudiced against movies in general right now. Maybe you'll enjoy it!

VIDEOS!

Got time to spare? Now you won't! ^^ )
I finished S5 of Ellen. I'm kinda sad it's over! I mean, even though it's technically been over for years. NOW what will I do with my time?! (...okay actually after this I'll be moving on to the one season of The Ellen Show I have on DVD and then it'll be back to The Ellen DeGeneres Show on TV - damn did this woman make it or what?)

Quick review of S5. )

Since this is a fannish post, you know I can't not mention Grey's. (Or I could, but why would I want to? Even when I hate this show I love hating it.) This isn't really about the show itself but recently I read something on Twitter that made me sad:

On Tuesday 5th April 2011, @shondarhimes said:

I DON'T pander. And straight people DON'T suck. At least, I don't suck. You might. I do not know you so I can't be sure. Also you just said I pander. So you'll excuse me for saying you suck... RT @youronlybelle All you do is pander to the gay/lesbian community. Which is fine. But straight people don't suck, you know.

It makes me sad that having a lesbian couple on is still seen as "pandering" to a special community. Whatever you may think about Grey's, I'd argue that the show does relationships pretty damn well. (This is probably truer of the earlier seasons though, before the hospital just became the setting for a neverending game of sexual musical chairs and people started copulating with otherworldly beings.) The thing about good storytelling is that you empathise with characters and root for relationships that have nothing to do with your own personal circumstances, and that means straight couples aren't just for straight people and gay couples aren't just for gay people.

The show's cast and onscreen issues are amazingly, wonderfully diverse. You could also see it as kinda sad that we have to go out of our way to celebrate shows that don't feature largely homogenous casts, but since we're not at that stage yet where everyone is cool with everyone it's always good to have a (successful!) show on the scene that is noticeably colour-, gender- and now sexuality-blind. It's not constructive when anything unconventional (which is a bullshit term anyway) is made out to be "pandering."

Also: people suck across the board. Love 'em anyway.

Moaaaarr rantyness and overthinking; possible spoilers for Grey's 7x18. )
Soo guys I just watched the entire S4 of Ellen in a day and that means I finally got to the Puppy Episode and yes that means I'm like 14 years late to the party but now I have SO MANY FEELINGS askdjflkahsdkf idek.

...dude, don't expect me to describe 'em.

The story arc was handled waaaay better than I could've ever expected. (Evidently, the recent writing on Grey's has lowered my standards.) The actual Puppy Episode was funny and heartening and insanely star-studded in a good way but I think I really liked the couple of eps that followed more, because they made the whole thing more Real - painfully, sometimes, okay a lot of the time - and they were Important & Necessary.

&c., &c. )

Ew why am I being so negative. Here, have a video of young!Melissa and looksthesameasnow!Ellen - sorry I couldn't find a better quality vid, I'd actually wanted to post one of the opening title (which was brilliant!!) but I couldn't find that either. Meh. G'night folks!

Edit: Since I briefly mentioned local censorship here, I thought I'd mention that I just heard that Lady Gaga's latest song Judas is banned from radio due to religious sensitivities. I would be enraged but omg have you heard that song? I think we're all better off rn.

Okay I'm kidding. (Maybe.)

Um so I spent the train ride home today plotting this Srs Biz post about vegetarianism and shit (literally) but I have been thinking about the Grey's music event since forever and so I watched it once I got back home and omggg why did it have to end ;________; FASTEST 42MIN OF MY LIFE

Idk how to summarise how I feel about this ep but it made me very very !! and feel like I needed to say something every half a minute, and usually this would mean raving like nobody's listening on Twitter but unfort people ARE listening so I didn't want to spoiler people (or give them reason to stop listening to me, period) so instead I opened up a TextEdit doc and typed everything I would type on Twitter if I could instead hahahaha god I am such a dork. And NOW imma post it all here NOT FOR YOU GUYS TO READ because seriously, it will drive you crazy, but I wanna have it here to look back on a year from now and wonder how I was such a fangirl. Assuming I don't become more of one in a future lolololol.

My thoughts as I was watching Grey's 7x18, only edited to remove excessive swearing. (I am pro-swearing, but uh, this was really excessive.) )

Dear Grey's, I am more for LGBT visibility than you'd ever know but it really does lose its effect when you shove it in our faces with unsubtle lines and borderline clichéd characters. :( Idk I feel this entire season has been kinda disappointing on this front, even though it had a really promising start.

I have a proper content-y post in my head... somewhere.
We have to wait like, a month till the next Grey's episode. No matter how much I angst about this show I still cannot live without it, so I predict a very miserable month ahead... how did I ever last a year in between each DVD release?! And why must the first season that I choose to follow regularly have so many hiatuses?

Soo I lurked around [livejournal.com profile] callie_arizona and I think I have found the most perfect ~5s EVER (and no, I'm not talking about the length of her appearance in Grey's 7x15). My heaaart and more.

If you have more time to kill... )

I would have accompanied this post with an icon of JCap, but it looks like my newly bought paid time hasn't kicked in yet. It's in!
The latest episode of Grey's was so uninteresting that I didn't even read the full AfterEllen.com recap - just read the first and last pages, where most of the Calzona stuff was - but I loved this:

Cut for minor spoilers! )

Anyway, idk why I'm suddenly commenting so much on this show when I've probably never liked it less. I think it's because I'm actually watching it on a week-by-week basis instead of watching the whole season at one go like I usually do, which would mean that my thoughts would be too messed up and numerous for me to ever bother writing a post on them. Because I'm too lazy to set up filters or anything, apologies for the fangirl spam, and I've never held it against any of you for scrolling past these posts so y'know, do what you gotta do heh.
