I decided to take the shore road back to the office after my doctor's appointment in Falmouth. I hadn't been this way in ages.
The beach was all covered with snow and the ocean was pretty calm, given the time of year. There was too much glare to look across the Sound at the Vineyard because this time of the year the sun is so low in the southern sky it looks like it's sitting right on top of the island. Two ferries were in transit from Vineyard Haven to Woods Hole.
We are right in the middle of the remnants of Hurricane Noel. The storm has been raging all day, and the worst part is just settling in now. We've had a steady increase in the wind, it's about 20-30 mph now, with gusts up to 40-50 mph. It's supposed to increase to 60 mph, with gusts to 80 mph in the next few hours. We've already had about 2"-3" of rain and we're supposed to get another 2" - 3" before it's done tonight.
I just woke up from a very nice nap. What else is there to do on a day like this?
We haven't lost electricity (yet), but we're prepared.
The radio station I was listening to just went off the air as I'm writing this.
1. Son earned his 2nd-degree white belt on Saturday. They tape a black stripe onto the white belt. He was so excited he was about to burst. In the "It's a Small World Department", 3 of his former teachers from daycare, including his kindergarten teacher were present at the health club for a birthday party, so they got to see him be promoted too.
2. Husband and I went to the B-52's Saturday night. IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME (or "Wicked Pissa" as we say here in Eastern Mass). They started out with my all-time favorite- Mesapotamia, then ended the concert with Love Shack, Planet Claire, and then Rock Lobster (which Husband called "Red Lobster" when s-i-l was teasing him that he didn't know any of the songs except for Love Shack). The only time Husband gave me the "You are Nuts" Look was when I was screaming to Planet Claire. My only disappointment was that they only played for about 80 minutes. It was too short for me.
[I could use a "B-52's" icon if any of you talented people have any.]
3. Yesterday the 3 of us went to the wedding of my best friends' eldest daughter. My friends were high school sweethearts, and that's where I met them. Their daughter was marrying her high school sweetheart. Son had a blast dancing with all the women of the bridal party, and with Michelle (mother of the bride and also Son's godmother). I couldn't dance too much because my foot is still bothering me. But I got to catch up with both of Michelle's brothers and her younger sister. We were all together in high school, and her family was my second home.
OMG it's so freaking cold here today. We're supposed to have snow showers tonight. Plus that achingly-cold East Wind coming off the water is really helping.
Today is our 13th wedding anniversary. We celebrated yesterday with a prime rib dinner. I'm on vacation this week, so I'm just taking it easy.
Today I took Son school shopping. He starts Wednesday.
Saturday night we went out to the social club on the military base for a barbecue and bonfire. It was good to see and reconnect with people we haven't seen in a few months.
Yesterday I lounged around on the couch all day. I'm liking the vacation so far.
I just dropped Son off for his next-to-last day of summer camp. They're going to Marconi Beach at the National Seashore in Eastham. He's then staying overnight at the Y-Camp with his friends.
We had to pack up 2 day's worth of clothes, bathingsuits, towels, and snacks.
We had the annual family lobster boil today. I completely pigged out on a lobster, steamers (clams), and corn, plus a couple of sodas. Husband ate about the same.
Aside from getting to see his cousins, they had a trampoline (with safety sides) for the kids. There were too many kids for any of the adults to go on it.
Besides, everytime I go on one now it feels like my insides are going to fall out.
It was 103F when I left my office for lunch today.
Half of Hyannis is apparently without electricity. We have it here in Barnstable Village, so the AC is running, albeit feebly.
Husband was working in his air-conditioned excavator today when I talked to him. He said he was going home early, so he'll check on the cats. I'm not too worried about them because they have plenty of water and they can go into the basement to escape the heat.
That was my loot last night from the fair. I bought 3 large bags of kettlecorn - no, you cannot have enough of this stuff - and the woman working the booth said she'd get me a larger bag to carry all 3 bags. Well, it was a large green garbage bag. I thanked her, mostly because it was easier to carry, plus I knew that Husband would have a fit when he saw me dragging a garbage bag and I told him it was full of popcorn. *snerk*
True to form, Husband was disgusted with me, Son was in awe of the amount of kettlecorn that the 2 of us would have to eat over the rest of the week.
Husband really, really needs to loosen up. He says Son is too much like me, or maybe I'm too much like Son, I can't remember really, but you really need to have fun when you find it.
Son of course made out. Husband finally did agree that it was All About the Boy night. Son and Husband went on the bumper cars together, and I have some excellent pictures of the two of them. Hopefully I can get them off of Husband's camera and up soon.
One thing about the fair is confirmed - I can't eat the greasy fair food like I used to be able to. I had fried veggies, and they kind of sat in my stomach. I ended up sleeping on the couch again because I couldn't get comfortable.
Plus I don't think I'll be able to stay after dark. Even before sunset, the noise was really starting to affect me - almost a sensory overload. Husband hustled us out before it got dark and the lights triggered a seizure. We all crashed when we got home. Too much walking in a very hot, humid evening.
