Weekly Chat
Saturday, 15 August 2026 13:52The weekly chat posts are intended for just that, chatting among each other. What are you currently watching? Reading? What actor/idol are you currently following? What are you looking forward to? Are you busy writing, creating art? Or did you have no time at all for anything, and are bemoaning that fact?
Whatever it is, talk to us about it here. Tell us what you liked or didn't like, and if you want to talk about spoilery things, please hide them under either of these codes:

Date: Saturday, 15 August 2026 11:55 (UTC)I finished watching Xiao Fang. I liked how it all came together, and I'm happy with everyone's decisions going forward. It all could have been such a different drama if the titular Xiao Fang didn't have such good support from her family, so I'm really happy they went with this light hearted route instead of leaning into the angst. If you're in the market for a short, empowering drama with plenty of interesting female characters, give this one a try.
Again, I added four more episodes to Mystic Nine (12/30). Still liking that one a lot, although I do miss Zhang Rishan somewhat fiercely. So much so, it made me head over to AO3 and look for fanfic again. XD Also, it makes me happy to see that The Mystic Nine (2016) is back in the top ten of the c-drama viewing charts, too, all thanks to the popularity of the new series. And apparently William Chan said in an interview that Zhang Qishan is the role of his lifetime, which delights me to no end!
I also continued watching the MLC reaction series up to episode 32. It's been pretty fun, and I'm happy to see that this guy has several other c-dramas on his channel that I'm interested in checking out.

I love that the drama from 2016 is getting attention again. It's still one of my favourite dramas.

Date: Saturday, 15 August 2026 13:04 (UTC)I am also reading one of the two (partial) translations that exist of the original Sanxia Wuyi novel that ZZA is based on/fanfic of: Tales of Magistrate Bao and His Valiant Lieutenants: Selections from Sanxia Wuyi. Translated by Blader, Susan. The Chinese University Press. 1998. ISBN 962-201-775-4.
I am enjoying it a lot?? It doesn't feel anything like the 2026 wuxia, of course, but you can definitely tell why this particular story collection is such a classic, and how the original oral performances must have entertained their Qing Dynasty audiences.
Oh right, and I did some research into the literary allusions and cultural references in the show, so if you've ever been curious where the original title of the show (and minifish's novel) comes from, that's the post for you.

Date: Saturday, 15 August 2026 17:07 (UTC)I also watched the first two episodes of The Road to Splendor and so far I find it a mixed bag. On the plus side I love Ding Yuxi's character and the drama is visually very appealing. I'm not warming up to the fl yet though and this kind of family drama is usually not my thing. I don't like her family at all, though that might actually be a plus since we're not supposed to like them I guess, lol. Still, I'm hoping that we get to the more action and adventure focused part soon.

Lots of fighting between concubines, I take it? Or is it another good-for-nothing weak father again?

Date: Saturday, 15 August 2026 17:49 (UTC)Dear Mr. Little Bear - blend of cute and heavy. The girl was unnecessary but I liked the leads together and was pleasantly surprised by the ending.
Unfold - definitely would have benefitted from a longer runtime since the concept was a bit complex to cram in, but very interesting and fresh.
Deep In - unfortunately I didn't love this as much as most people seemed to; it was good with strong chemistry but I found some elements uncomfortable and the plot overly convoluted.
Connecting to You - Taiwanese, currently airing, pretty light and endearing.I like the concept and characters.

Date: Saturday, 15 August 2026 18:32 (UTC)The B plot romance is very satisfying to me. I love both characters so much. It's pretty often that I get more invested in the B plot romance than in the main couple.

Date: Saturday, 15 August 2026 20:46 (UTC)I found him very charismatic and believable like that, too! I'm just worried he'll switch over to weirdly obsessive. But it's still kinda early days for me with twenty more episodes to go.

Date: Sunday, 16 August 2026 04:43 (UTC)I also picked up a couple games on Steam that look interesting - Ignited in Cavern and Stiff Neck.

Date: Sunday, 16 August 2026 07:34 (UTC)Ignited in Cavern looks interesting! Yay for more games set in ancient China. *g* On that note, I've been craving Immortal Life for the past week, but I'm neck deep into Moonlight Peaks and I don't want to lose momentum. Argh!

Date: Sunday, 16 August 2026 21:49 (UTC)I watched the Wu Lei parts of the cosplay event (I sadly didn't find a Wu Lei cut, and the whole thing is three hours long, so I just skipped through and hope I got all of his stuff).
One of my icon challenges is doing a rewatch event this month, and I picked Amidst a Snowstorm of Love. I was very tired this week and this low-stress show with lots of kisses seemed like a good candidate. That means there will be (hopefully lots of) new icons by mid-September. :D
Oooh, and I rewatched ep 9 of The Long Season with Chen Minghao and Qin Hao so I can remember where I left off last year. I had dropped it because it was too dark for me when I was swamped with work last year, but I really want to finish it. It's still brilliant (and omg so sad). I hope I'll stick to the plan and finish it soon.

Date: Monday, 17 August 2026 19:30 (UTC)I finished a Thai BL called Payback, and it ended up being a strange balance of way more wholesome and cuddly than expected from the title and first episode, and yet also kind of morally bankrupt. So it was a hell of a ride. I kind of want to show it to other
sickospeople who might appreciate it.I've kept up with another Thai BL called KNOT, which is sticking with only the barest nod toward having a plot AND has been the first of these omegaverse shows to actually commit that knotting is a thing that happens in this universe, and I think these actors are up to that challenge.
I'm pushing through to finish Love For You. It's very good and I'm liking the characters, story, side characters, and plot - but it's unusual to have a modern day setting that I'm watching at 1.25 speed that still feels like a perfectly normal pace for everything. (If this show interests you, ask me for a list of warnings)
And I started The Road to Splendor. I only found 2 episodes streaming legally, so I don't know how it's the popular show this season, but I've now found a source. So... we'll see. I'll give it a try.
And my groupwatch has started the second season of Link Click, so perfect timing for season 3 to start dropping!

Date: Tuesday, 18 August 2026 08:34 (UTC)I started watching The Road to Splendor, as well. Still have my WeTV subscription, so this worked out well for me. I'm only two episodes in so far, though, and disliking this family immensely!
