So, still enjoying Columbus Day weekend. I had my friend Cali over for a Kathleen Turner quadruple-feature on Saturday. It went a little bit awry, though, when I heard what sounded like a bird in distress out in my parking lot. Wasn't a bird, it was this guy:

My neighbor said that kittens have been popping up all over town, so I don't know if someone's been dumping them off or what. I immediately tried to give him to my friend, but her new apartment doesn't allow pets. And my boy begged and begged and begged some more. So...I guess we're keeping the little guy. He'll be going to the vet this week for a full check-up and shots.
Pending confirmation of gender, I'm pleased to introduce Barry Benjamin Bruno. ::grins:: Barry because he's fast, like the Flash, and Benjamin because my boy liked that name too and couldn't decide. (My suggestion of Bucky was summarily vetoed.) I didn't want another cat. I can't afford it, not really. But how can I say no to my boy or to that little furry face?
Not sure how old he is, but he's very, very small. Happy to report that's he's using the cat box, though, and eating very well. Now we'll see what the vet says.
In fic news, I have once again failed to meet a challenge deadline. I don't know what's with me with deadlines this year, but it's not been good. Sigh.
However, it's Monster Fest at
ushobwri and that's sparked my muse like it always does. Without further ado...some fic!

(That's all I'll say unless you indicate you'd like more info, seeing as I'm a stranger who wandered up to you in someone else's comments, but I'm happy to go into more detail on demand.)

If you have any questions, let me know! ^_^
*Plus a link at the bottom of my post goes to a comment by a friend who has LaPerms. I'm not personally familiar with that breed, but she and her allergic wife have a pair of them and her wife does really well with theirs.

Date: 2016-10-13 12:53 am (UTC)I'll also have to do some research on how to care for cats, since I've no idea what that entails lol.

Date: 2016-10-14 01:03 am (UTC)Some people Siberians work for do still react to them somewhat--I believe that acquaintance does keep her pair out of the bedroom or something, because she's not 100% resistant. But she HAS and loves the cats.
If you ever decide you want to seriously pursue this, feel free to get in touch with me and I'll gladly send you some fur from grooming our pair. My acquaintance doing that for us helped a lot with our decision, and I'm happy to pay it forward.
Fortunately, there are a bazillion resources for learning how to care for cats. Siberians do take a bit more maintenance than short-haired breeds (which I guess is probably obvious), but there isn't generally a ton of effort involved. Mystic Melody's site (http://www.siberiancat.com/) has a lot of info on the breed and taking care of kittens and stuff. (They're not our breeder, but our cats' father was bred there before going to 7 Cedars, where ours are from.)

Date: 2016-10-14 04:33 am (UTC)I do want to seriously pursue this, but I have a battle ahead of me in regards to convincing my family to at least try. I may randomly message you out of the blue someday asking if you'd be willing to send some fur, which...will probably be weird to read at first, haha.
Thanks for the link! It's going to come in handy, hopefully....

Date: 2016-10-15 03:54 am (UTC)Given how enthusiastically I babble about Siberians at people, it probably won't seem that weird. ^_^
And I recommend our breeder at 7 Cedars (http://www.7cedarsranch.org/SiberianCats.html) VERY highly. They have no social media presence to speak of and don't update the site very often, but they're AMAZING. And while I didn't do a ton of price comparison, my impression is that their price for the cats was somewhat lower than some other breeders (although at least for us it probably worked out to be about the same with the cost of transport factored in, because they hand-deliver cats. But it meant a lot to us that they cared enough to transport the kittens personally so they had company and were handled by someone they knew for the whole trip). Claudia and Jinksy were just beautifully socialized and trained when we got them.
This last bit will probably sound overly ambitious/unrealistic, but I also seriously suggest getting two kittens if you're in a position to. It doubles the cost of everything, obviously, but kittens are so ridiculously energetic and playful, and having two lets them wear each other out and helps keep them from being bored. (When we were first looking into Siberians and my horribly-allergic husband was still about 99% sure there was no way in hell it would work out, I suggested getting two, and he was like, "You have GOT to be kidding." But we did a bunch of research and he also concluded that it was the way to go, if we were gonna do it. And the cats are three years old now and still clearly benefit from having each other around, even though they're not super-snuggly siblings.)
And now I'm feeling a little weird about clogging up

Date: 2016-10-18 05:01 am (UTC)Thank you for the link to the 7 Cedars page! I'm going to look through it and show my family. I really like that they care so much about the pets under their care and want to make sure they're well socialized, trained, and go to a good home. I think that's worth whatever price they ask, though they may also require some time to save up to get one, if I can convince my family. Especially if I end up getting two, which sounds like a fantastic idea to me.
Haha yes, poor

Date: 2016-10-13 12:05 am (UTC)Of course, I had a discussion at Squee Weekend about maybe editing my work more if I'm perpetually unsatisfied with it, which I really want to do, but since I've got so little time before the deadline, I might have to try that with the next fic.
