brumeier: Stefon gif (Stefon)

So, still enjoying Columbus Day weekend. I had my friend Cali over for a Kathleen Turner quadruple-feature on Saturday. It went a little bit awry, though, when I heard what sounded like a bird in distress out in my parking lot. Wasn't a bird, it was this guy:

My neighbor said that kittens have been popping up all over town, so I don't know if someone's been dumping them off or what. I immediately tried to give him to my friend, but her new apartment doesn't allow pets. And my boy begged and begged and begged some more. So...I guess we're keeping the little guy. He'll be going to the vet this week for a full check-up and shots.

Pending confirmation of gender, I'm pleased to introduce Barry Benjamin Bruno. ::grins:: Barry because he's fast, like the Flash, and Benjamin because my boy liked that name too and couldn't decide. (My suggestion of Bucky was summarily vetoed.) I didn't want another cat. I can't afford it, not really. But how can I say no to my boy or to that little furry face?

Not sure how old he is, but he's very, very small. Happy to report that's he's using the cat box, though, and eating very well. Now we'll see what the vet says.

In fic news, I have once again failed to meet a challenge deadline. I don't know what's with me with deadlines this year, but it's not been good. Sigh.

However, it's Monster Fest at [livejournal.com profile] ushobwri and that's sparked my muse like it always does. Without further ado...some fic!

Of course you couldn't resist the kittie - they're designed like that on purpose.

Yay for cats! I would love one but my family is allergic. What a cutie!

I've been having an issue with deadlines too, lately. Maybe there's something in the air...

Yay for cats! I would love one but my family is allergic.

*quietly sidles over* Siberian cats. Amazing. Hypoallergenic. Seriously.

(That's all I'll say unless you indicate you'd like more info, seeing as I'm a stranger who wandered up to you in someone else's comments, but I'm happy to go into more detail on demand.)

I don't mind you wandering in :D I would love for you to give more detail, if you don't mind. Or I can do some research on Siberian cats so I can present it all to my family and be like, "SEE? WE CAN HAVE CUTENESS."

I have a post (http://umadoshi.dreamwidth.org/573953.html) dedicated to our experience with our Siberians*! We've had our pair for a bit over three years now, after I'd spent over a decade thinking my husband's severe allergies meant I'd never have cats again. Because I'd never heard of the breed before the summer we got ours and wish someone had told me YEARS earlier, Siberians are now basically the only topic I'll offer unsolicited advice on. (They're not NON-allergenic, so they don't work for everyone, but the success rates are apparently great.)

If you want to see larger pics than my icons, I made a Tumblr for them (http://jinksyandthebrain.tumblr.com/).

If you have any questions, let me know! ^_^

*Plus a link at the bottom of my post goes to a comment by a friend who has LaPerms. I'm not personally familiar with that breed, but she and her allergic wife have a pair of them and her wife does really well with theirs.

Oh, those cats are beautiful. I'd love to have one, though I'm worried that my family will be the ones they don't work for. I'll have to gather some testimonials and try to convince everyone to give them a try, at the very least - your post is well written and very convincing! I also have no idea if there are any catteries around here, having never done research.

I'll also have to do some research on how to care for cats, since I've no idea what that entails lol.

IIRC, a thing our breeder in Colorado does is let people send her a shirt or something, which she puts on the mama cat to get it all saturated with her dander and whatnot, and then mails it back as something people can use to see if it sets off their allergies. And when we were looking into it, the person who recced the breeder to us mailed us some fur combed out of her kitties so my husband could see if he reacted to it.

Some people Siberians work for do still react to them somewhat--I believe that acquaintance does keep her pair out of the bedroom or something, because she's not 100% resistant. But she HAS and loves the cats.

If you ever decide you want to seriously pursue this, feel free to get in touch with me and I'll gladly send you some fur from grooming our pair. My acquaintance doing that for us helped a lot with our decision, and I'm happy to pay it forward.

Fortunately, there are a bazillion resources for learning how to care for cats. Siberians do take a bit more maintenance than short-haired breeds (which I guess is probably obvious), but there isn't generally a ton of effort involved. Mystic Melody's site (http://www.siberiancat.com/) has a lot of info on the breed and taking care of kittens and stuff. (They're not our breeder, but our cats' father was bred there before going to 7 Cedars, where ours are from.)

Oh, sending a shirt is a brilliant idea. I love how seriously the breeder takes this!

I do want to seriously pursue this, but I have a battle ahead of me in regards to convincing my family to at least try. I may randomly message you out of the blue someday asking if you'd be willing to send some fur, which...will probably be weird to read at first, haha.

Thanks for the link! It's going to come in handy, hopefully....

Given how enthusiastically I babble about Siberians at people, it probably won't seem that weird. ^_^

And I recommend our breeder at 7 Cedars (http://www.7cedarsranch.org/SiberianCats.html) VERY highly. They have no social media presence to speak of and don't update the site very often, but they're AMAZING. And while I didn't do a ton of price comparison, my impression is that their price for the cats was somewhat lower than some other breeders (although at least for us it probably worked out to be about the same with the cost of transport factored in, because they hand-deliver cats. But it meant a lot to us that they cared enough to transport the kittens personally so they had company and were handled by someone they knew for the whole trip). Claudia and Jinksy were just beautifully socialized and trained when we got them.

This last bit will probably sound overly ambitious/unrealistic, but I also seriously suggest getting two kittens if you're in a position to. It doubles the cost of everything, obviously, but kittens are so ridiculously energetic and playful, and having two lets them wear each other out and helps keep them from being bored. (When we were first looking into Siberians and my horribly-allergic husband was still about 99% sure there was no way in hell it would work out, I suggested getting two, and he was like, "You have GOT to be kidding." But we did a bunch of research and he also concluded that it was the way to go, if we were gonna do it. And the cats are three years old now and still clearly benefit from having each other around, even though they're not super-snuggly siblings.)

And now I'm feeling a little weird about clogging up [livejournal.com profile] brumeier's comments so much, so if you have more questions (or want fur or something down the road), feel free to email me at ysabet @ gmail . (If it's months from now, just mention your LJ name and that this is where we were talking. ^_^)

Haha, well as long as you aren't freaked out by getting a random message. I'll be sure to say that we began to talk on [livejournal.com profile] brumeier's journal about cats.

Thank you for the link to the 7 Cedars page! I'm going to look through it and show my family. I really like that they care so much about the pets under their care and want to make sure they're well socialized, trained, and go to a good home. I think that's worth whatever price they ask, though they may also require some time to save up to get one, if I can convince my family. Especially if I end up getting two, which sounds like a fantastic idea to me.

Haha yes, poor [livejournal.com profile] brumeier. I'll send you a private message if I have any questions, but you've done a fantastic job keeping me informed. Thank you SO much!

Thanks! Luckily [livejournal.com profile] selenic76 and [livejournal.com profile] melagan granted a week's extension. I think that'll be enough time.

Of course, I had a discussion at Squee Weekend about maybe editing my work more if I'm perpetually unsatisfied with it, which I really want to do, but since I've got so little time before the deadline, I might have to try that with the next fic.

So far the only trouble we're having is that he hangs out in my son's room at night, and by hangs out I mean crawls all over him all night long. So my boy isn't getting much sleep. We're going to try keeping his bedroom door closed tonight, which my boy doesn't like to do but might be his only shot. I really don't have a place I can lock the kitten in, except the bathroom.
