Tropes

• Age Differences - Age differences, whether small or cross-generational, add great tension. Things I like to see with this trope are when both partners are into the age difference, when they have to negotiate issues with it, and the like. It's also fun when the younger character does the pursuing!


• Arranged Marriages - This is a lovely trope, either alone or combined with other tropes. Forced emotional and physical closeness, learning to trust one another, domesticity and learning what the other person is like in private, mutual pining between spouses, contracts getting bought out unexpectedly, suddenly catching feelings...


• Can't Stop Thinking About It - This is great combined with pining! One character overhearing another moaning their name, hearing a rumor about how well-endowed their crush is, accidentally seeing the other one naked or walking in on them having sex: all good. All delicious.


• Clothing - Descriptions of clothing and the meanings characters and society attach to it, yes please! What kind of clothing characters choose to wear and in what situations can tell so much about their internal thoughts/feelings. Decadent descriptions of finely-cut suits, embroidered kimonos, lacey lingerie, military uniforms, and the like are lovely.


• Courting - This can go with arranged marriages and slow burns, and it also feeds into my love for ritual and building intimacy. This trope could include characters spending time chaperoned and yearning to touch, writing letters, sending gifts, having to decide whether to accept a suit or what it might mean for them or their families...


• Domesticity - Domestic acts - cooking for each other, cutting each other's hair, bathing together, wearing each other's clothes, shaving each other, falling asleep on each other - can show so much about a character and their feelings. Especially good when the character might be reluctant to show their commitment or emotions verbally.


• First Times - First times can apply to so many things: meetings, crushes, kisses, arguments, sharing a bed, etc. They come with vulnerability and intimacy baked into the trope, along with emotional conflict over how characters respond to crossing previously-held boundaries or seeing each other in an entirely new light.


• Forced Proximity - Only one bed? Stranded on a desert island? Forced to share a tent after another one blew away? Sitting for a painting? Snowed into a cabin together? All great for enhancing the tension and making characters see each other's personalities, actions, and bodies in new and sexy ways.


• Interspecies - Conflicts can lead to interesting situations and exploration of relationships, and what can be more conflicting than two lovers of different species? A character immersing themselves in their partner's differences - physical, mental, emotional, and cultural - can lead to deeper understandings of their own self.


• Mission Fic - This is similar to arranged marriages in that it forces emotional and physical closeness between the characters involved. It also allows for a lot of action, competency kink, and reliance on each other to make it through the mission and to the objective. There's also the potential for fun conflict in what characters value more: each other, or the mission?


• Pining - I love a good pine. Characters separated by age, class, education, or some other societal factor who truly want to be together but can't imagine how; one character pining after another one who they think is already partnered; guilty fantasies of what it might be like to be able to confess: all good.


• Religion - Religious beliefs and orders, especially being raised by a religious order or attached to a belief in celibacy, creates so much emotional conflict for characters. Do they give up their beliefs for love? What rituals do they live by? How might they keep or discard those beliefs in order to get the love they truly desire?


• Road Trips - Great American or otherwise, road trips allow for domesticity, pining, and nature descriptions. There's also the potential for great characterization in who drives, what music they choose, how they handle conflict on the open road, and the like, to say nothing of the reason for why they're on the road in the first place.


• Seduction - Lingering glances with heavy-lidded eyes. Fingertips grazing lightly over the vulnerable inside of a wrist. Low voices that promise access to unseen or unknown pleasures. Hot breath teasing across parted lips. The temptation of wanting to fall for someone you're not quite sure of yet. A slow, well-described seduction scene is one of my favorite things.


• Size Difference - A basic trope, but a good one. Giant hands enfolding small ones, easily wrapping around wrists; having to bend down or go on tiptoes to kiss; being able to pick each other up or scale each other like a tree; being feared for their height and strength or underestimated because they're smaller: so many ways to go on this one.


• Soulbonds - Sharing each other's dreams, scars, or having their name or the first words they say to you marked on your skin: the potential for conflict is rich with this one. A mark might be damaged, dreams might be incomprehensible, one's soulmate might end up being their worst enemy... this trope goes well with almost any other.


• Survival - Put the characters on a desert island, a mountain, or surviving some sort of wilderness disaster, especially if they have to learn to take care of and rely on each other for food, water, shelter, and warmth. Blame reading too much Hatchet and My Side of the Mountain as a kid. Bonus points for refusal to be separated once they're rescued.


• Time Travel - Characters trying to save each other's lives in the past; getting transported into the body of their younger self and having to hide their knowledge of the future while trying to fix the present; reliving a day over and over until they get it right; these are all great versions of the time travel trope.

I dug through the Smut4Smut tagset for tropes, kinks, and the like. In terms of language used for body parts, I prefer blunt terms like 'cock,' 'cunt,' and 'clit.' Words like 'slit,' 'hardness,' or other euphemisms generally pull me out of the scene unless the character is one that would use euphemistic language.

• A/B/O Dynamics - I don't have preferences on what omegas have as their genitalia, so go with what your heart tells you. I am all about the porny consequences of this trope: omegas getting assigned to alphas to be fucked; omegas going into heat and being fought over by multiple alphas to win mating rights; alphas who go feral and dominant, etc.

• Dacryphilia - Crying! Tears of overstimulation, of relief, of pleasure, of pain, of joy: I love them all. Whether it's one or both characters crying, or one character reassures another that it's okay to cry, I just love tears as a sign of emotional or physical release. It also allows for open vulnerability and reassurance if that's the mood of the scene.


• Dirty Talk - I love detailed dirty talk as part of foreplay, especially when characters in a porn scene describe the changes they can see in their partner's bodies from arousal: blushing, wetness, hardness, and the like. Explicit descriptions of what one character plans to do to the other one are also great fun to read.


• Dom/sub - Power dynamics are my ur-kink, the kink from which all kinks spring forth into life. Pretty much all of my other kinks are just ways to carry out these dynamics. The knowledge that one character is choosing to turn their power over to another character for mutual pleasure or to gain some relief from choice is very sexy.


• Feminization - Calling pecs tits or a hole a cunt, milking a partner's prostate while telling them how hungry their cunt is, fucking their thighs while saying their little pussy can't take it... dressing up a masculine frame in delicate lacy or silky lingerie; the recipient being surprised or a little bit ashamed of just how erotic they find being feminized... all delicious.

• Xeno - Unusual genitalia, yes, please! A character being surprised by their lover's genitals but still interested in exploring and figuring out how best to please them is like catnip.
