Hooptober Neun (2022) - Film #14
Having seen a couple of seasons of the TV show and enjoyed them, I was curious to see how this would compare. It was interesting to see how some of the character traits paralleled those from the show, whilst others didn’t at all.
Generally, this is a super funny film. There’s attention to detail throughout and some great throwaway lines that breathe life into it. I thought the cast overall were a mixed bag, but Waititi and Clement were thoroughly excellent.
I did feel there were a couple of lulls, and there were some scenes that didn’t hit me in the way that best parts did here, but the fact that the best parts are very good indeed makes up for it.
The humour here is generally very sweet, and that makes for a nice, if slightly underwhelming ending. A large part of the ending being a little weak is that there isn’t a huge of plot in the movie, and therefore there’s not really much that needs resolving. The film really is more of a character study, and that works well overall, it just limits certain decisions.
Films like this are endlessly quotable, as evidenced by many reviews here. So I’ll finish off with a quote that really helped me understand vampires - "vampires love Wesley Snipes."
