It was a gorgeous day and I want to go out and enjoy it, but my allergies are keeping me indoors. I went out for a grocery run and that was enough to sent off my allergies for the rest of the day despite meds.

Work has been very minimal. I'm pretty much just checking emails a couple of times a day and working on school word as "professional development". At least I have plenty of time for it now. Days of the week have pretty much lost all meaning and my sleep schedule is pretty out of sync with where it should be.

Lucky

This pandemic has really brought home to me how lucky I am right now. I don't have to worry about my job and if it'll still be there tomorrow or how I'll get food on the table. My jobs gone to minimum manning and I only have to go in for two days a week. I can "easily" self isolate the rest of the time. Right now I'm going outside for a 20-30 min walk everyday and that's the only time I leave the house.

Don't know how to explain to some of my officemates that just because you(young person) aren't likely to die doesn't mean you won't need hospitalization, so herd immunity and just isolating those over 70 won't prevent the hospitals from overflowing.

With the Trump administration telling the states not to release the unemployment numbers, the market is probably going to crash again once those get released.

I need to go find the local food banks and donate money to them.

Translated story I'm enjoying that makes a nice break from all the doom and gloom.

Guide to how to fail at online dating. BL about how one guy pretends to be a girl to get back at another guy. Surprisingly didn't hit my embarrassment squick, probably because they try to talk through their issues and the characters aren't complete assholes.

Union of Enemies

https://www.novelupdates.com/series/union-of-enemies/

This is another shorter one. I had the day off today and I read it instead of going out and doing some errands I was supposed to. It's enjoyable rom com between two kids who grew up together and finally get together. I wasn't too happy with the male leads tendency to think he knew what's best for the girl and sabotaging her occasionally if he thought it was something that would hurt her in the end. Ie enjoyable to read, but not in real life.

This is very much if you need something quick and funny to read.

Husband, be a gentleman
https://www.novelupdates.com/series/husband-be-a-gentleman/

This is a completely translated novel and shorter at 81 chapters. Yay! I'm not sure if its the translation or the original writing, but the start of the novel is a bit stiff. I enjoyed it, the characters were well written and the consequences for their actions made sense. Its a palace intrigue novel, no transmigration, and the relationships between people are more complex than in some I've read. The ending did feel slightly rushed, but not too badly.

Its a historical novel about the oldest daughter who get married off to an imperial prince she met as a child and their relationships to each other and to those around them. People do die in this novel, but they're not senseless oh you stepped on my dress get beaten with a 100 strokes, instead the deaths make sense with the characters.

The Enchantress of Medicine, with the Heaven Defying Child, and the Black Belly Father
https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-enchantress-of-medicine-with-the-heaven-defying-child-and-the-black-belly-father/

Hmm, I'm still not sure how I feel about this one. It's much bloodier than my usual taste with people getting killed right and left, but I like what we've seen of the relationship between the two main leads so far and how the male lead is trying to change after learning that just saying she's going to marry him won't work. You really see him trying to prove that he's worthy of her.

I also appreciate the fact that the female lead can take care of herself without him. at least so far. yes it's because of the amazing power up that she got, but her power level is slowly growing which helps the fights stay equal and she is allowed to make mistakes with her enemies and see the results of those mistakes.

Okay, so while those are all reasons I read the 477 chapters translated so far, really the real reason I kept going even though its more violent than I usually enjoy is that I want to know what is going on with that rabbit!

I'm afraid with 2400 chpts and still on going though that it'll be one of those stories that takes everything good about it and destroys it. Though the side characters are pretty neat and I am curious about who the real villain will end up being.

Beware, all the side characters so far have their own romances going on to.

The Feast

Look, when I say I've been binging on these, I've been bingeing on them. After dropping the MC is Kickass, I picked up The Feast. https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-feast/

This one is about a modern day girl who gets stuck in the body of the first wife set in standard chinese historical dynasty. She's a foodie who knows a ton of recipes and wins the heart/stomach of those around her with her cooking. I really think people don't get how difficult cooking was before modern day appliances and available spices judging by how many women go back in time and wow people with their cooking.

Only 83 chpts have been translated so far, so I'm not sure how this modern day women who refuses to share her husband will get him to drop the other wives and concubines. I do like the craziness/humor of the two main leads relationships though and how slow its going. The last couple of chapters have been a bit more palace intrigue than I generally like, but they've been different than most I've read. I mean how much palace intrigue usually sets roosters on people?

I'll definitely be bookmarking this one and following it for a bit longer.

Last night I started the MC is Kickass, but I only ended up reading about half of what's been translated. Got up to 242, went I'm not enjoying this anymore and noped out. I thought the idea of making your virtual character as ugly as possible interesting, but as the story went along there was too much non communication going on between the leads that didn't make sense with my view of the characters. It also had too many people going oh, your rude to me so I'll be rude to you for my taste and the characters became ones I wasn't interested in reading more about.

I've been reading a ton of translated novels lately and don't have anyone to gush over them in person, so I decided to start talking about them here. The one I just finished was Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator. https://www.volarenovels.com/novel/transmigrator-meets-reincarnator

This is the story of how a girl wakes up in the plotline of a book she'd only read half of and then tries to live a life of peace and comfort.

I really enjoyed it. It got a bit too long by the end, but the plot never got too convoluted and the characterizations made sense including how the leads interacted and fell in love. The romance didn't have the really irritating consent issues that some did even if the author kept mentioning how young everyone was. Don't know how authentic that really is, but that was my main problem with the story. Did notice that everyone the main characters liked got a happy romance ending pretty much. I am sort of curious about one of the side characters ending.

Probably because I'm not the most ambitious person myself I like that the female lead's main goal was to make enough money to live comfortably and then relax and enjoy life instead of trying to get the male lead to fall in love with her or get revenge on everyone. Though she was able to get revenge for those who treated her badly.

Okay seriously the group project for my class right now is making me laugh out of shear disbelief. It feels like they're not paying any attention to anything I say. I know it's not quite that bad, but it feels like it is.

Godzilla

The National Gallery of Art was showing the classic black and white Godzilla film today, so I gave it a shot and watched most of it. It was really interesting seeing how the tension built up so well. I've gotten so used to faster shot changes, so at first the slower moving scenery changes was a bit jarring. I got used to it after a bit and found that it gave me time to think about the film while watching it because there wasn't something going on every millisecond that dragged you along. I can definitely see how people have written papers on the meaning behind the film and the views it demonstrates on atomic weapons and how we should approach problems. It was also very interesting looking at peoples costumes and the mixture of western and traditional Japanese attire used in the show.

So I've slowly been trying to go and reread some of the books that have been hanging out on my bookshelves for a while. Yesterday I reread Maniac Magee and it was a really weird feeling. Some of it was the subject matter, but also some of it was I think realizing how much the worlds changed in the 30 years since the book was published. I've read a ton of historical children's books, but going in I expected the world of Ballet shoes to be different from my world. This book though was contemporarish to my childhood and that I think really made it a head trip on rereading.

I have no idea why I still had this book, but I wanted to reread it before deciding if it needed to go into the donate pile. It was interesting the sort of matter a fact way that everyone treated Maniac not having parents or a home or going to school. The urban legend framework I think actually makes it stronger because it explains some of that matter a factness. When I finished I was going to donate it, but I realized it was making me think on what type of parent I want to be and kids and racism and all sorts of stuff so its going back into the keep pile.

DC

I love being in DC! I went to check out the new exhibition on the Chinese empressess at the Freer and they were doing a bunch of stuff for Asian Pacific Heritage month. I colored in a Korean Tiger and Magpie to keep away bad luck and then drew a Mandela style bookmark and learned about about the art style.

With the sun out and having energy these last couple of weeks, I finally downloaded Tinder again and am going to try dating again. It's been a while since I've attempted it, but I'm trying to not let my nerves get in the way and to actually get out and meet people. I'm going for coffee tomorrow with one guy and we'll see how it goes?

Just finished rewatching Yuri on Ice since I was reading a bunch of YoI fanfics recently and I had forgotten how it's such a great series. I'm really curious how the movie that's supposed to come out this year will do. I have a ton of fun reading the fanfics, but after rewatching the series I think I'm going to disagree on some of the characterizations of victor and yuri.

Hockey wise I scored my season goal last night off an awesome pass right behind the goalie that went straight to me. We ended up tying the game, but it was definitely one of our better games. I hurt from that game though and we don't check. I can't imagine how hard a NHL game is on the players bodies if a rec league game leaves bruises.

Migranes

I hadn't had a migraine the last couple of months, so I'd hoped that they were done and gone. Yeah not so much. Noticed the nausea that proceeds one a bit ago and could feel the migraine starting up. Took my meds and hopefully it won't interfere with skating tonight.

Internet

Finally gave in a got internet for my apartment. I was trying to do most of my online class at work, but that just wasn't working out the way I'd hoped to. I have a paper due next week and I've really gotten out of the habit of writing them. My goal for this weekend is two pages completed. Lets see if I can do that.

So today I was lucky enough to go visit the newish National Museum for African American Heritage. I spent three hours there and only got through the Cultural and Heritage floors, not the history floors(I'll do those next time) and sitting here this evening and thinking about it I realized that it's a very different experience from the American Indian museum. Now its been probably 6 months since my visit to the AIM, but I remeber it being much more focused on different tribes culture and the tribes as a whole where the NMAAH seemed to focus more on what individuals accomplished. I want to go now and compare the directors goals and museum mission statements to see if that explains some of the differences

Didn't mean to be gone for so long, but I forgot my password and then moved to a new computer. Well while I've been gone I moved to DC for work and love it so far! It's awesome being able to walk or take the metro to so many amazing museums. Work itself is okay, but boring. Hopefully it'll get more interesting over the next couple of months, but even if it doesn't I still have so much to occupy myself!

Need to get active and involved with hockey again as its the best way I've found recently to stay in shape. My body though is getting much slower to heal and I sprained my ankle in june and it's still twinging weirdly.

I don't have internet at my place right now, trying to be good and not spend all my time on the computer. Instead I seem to be spending it on my phone, so not really any change there. I'm planning on working on my masters again in the spring, so I'll eventually have internet again and hopefully post more.

Is it no rest for the weary or the wicked? Unfortunately I'm only weary.
bookchan: endless sky (Default)
Day off work today and took my car into the shop to get the oil changed and the breaks looked at since they had been squeaking a lot. My breaks are going to need replaced in the next couple of months and the quote they gave is expensive! Guess that's what my tax refund will cover this year.

Anyways stopped at the bookstore on the way there for something to read while I waited and got the new lorreta Chase and the manga Slumbering Beauty. I really enjoyed the slow pace of slumbering beauty and the art style was nice. Right now it seems to be a slice of life story about a girl who sleeps too much and has developed the power to see sleep spirits. She starts helping one out and has her world expand as she meets people, since she pretty much had always ignored everyone in an attempt to ignore her unhappy family. It'll be interesting to see if the series ends up having her reconnect with her family or just with her new found family.
