So, other than instructions on how to get in, there's not much in the bio page about what we mean to do, once we're in this community.
Since we're supposed to be the literary elite, and read books all the time, I figured we might post about the books we read. Moderators, is this your intended purpose for this community? Or, could you clarify your intended purpose.
Anyway, in the spirit of supporting this community and giving it some content, I thought I'd go ahead and make a post about what I've been reading.
I just finished The Iliad. I'd never read it in school. We only read The Odyssey. Then (yes, I must admit, I was influenced by Hollywood), after I watched Troy, I was curious about the story of the Iliad. [First off, that movie wasn't supposed to be a direct movie adaptation. You must know that going in. So, I wasn't expecting the book to be the same story, though the movie did motivate my curiosity about the story in the book.]
I did enjoy the style. I found the poetic repetition of bits of the narrative, not annoying, as I expected, but entertaining. I found myself feeling nostalgic about that part of the story through it's repetition. It gave it it's epic feel. There were quite a few elements I found trite, and tedious to get through, as the extreme detail of each strike in the battle scenes. This didn't bother me too much though. It ended sooner than I expected. I expected it to finish the war, and it ended with Hector's death. The focus of the story was difficult for me to find. Was it meant to focus on the play between Achilles and Hector? It deviated so much from that, if it was to be center stage.
Does anyone have anything to say about this book. Did you read it in school? Are you familiar with a common analysis of it? Any personal opinions, with or contrary to accepted opinions on this extremely famous work? Do you appreciate it as a literary work, or only for historical study?
